This song (one my absolute favorites) is from around 1979 or so, although it has a 1950's rock & roll sound with some soft rock, perhaps a touch of jazz, at least that's what I hear in it. Maybe a bit of country, too.

Asia is right. Some of us don't have a spouse, significant other or friends. At least people I would actually call a friend. People don't really know what it means to be a friends anymore. The term is used too loosely as people saying I love you. I've been lonely and alone for years. For the most part, I'm busy enough to not think about it. There are times I have nothing to do or want to go do something with someone and there is no one to call. No one to talk to you or lean on. That's why I have to constantly stay busy from the time I wake up until I go to bed so I don't have time to think about being alone and lonely because if I think about it too long, it hurts.
@garyarnett1220
@garyarnett1220 Год назад
So sorry to hear that AJ. I also am alone, the two really close friends I had to lean on have passed, both much younger than I am. So yeah it gets really lonely at times, but these music reactions help feel connected somewhat.

I'll add this, even if you have friends, you can still be lonely. Friends do help, but for the most part, they have their families to get back to and there you are-lonely
@elevenbucks5682
@elevenbucks5682 Год назад
AJ you sound just like me, I am 74 and my wife died long ago. all my friend s have died or moved, some I gave up on because they really only cared for themselves. No one calls, no one cares. I just dont see the point in it anymore.
@RReneeS
@RReneeS Год назад
Some people don't realize what it means to be truly lonely. I think they throw around the word, just like some throw around the word love. It is definitely true that these words mean far too little to some. In these days of the pandemic, it's become all too clear just how deep loneliness can be. Thank god for people like Asia and BJ where you can at least turn to lose yourself in the beauty of music for awhile

Such a shame this was the only hit JD had. He wrote a ton of songs for others, like the Eagles, but his own recordings didn’t do much. You can hear various members of the Eagles singing and playing on this one. I really loved that wonderful piano, by Don Grolnick. He was a jazz musician, composer, and producer, as well as an in-demand session player who can be heard on many famous artists’ recordings. This song came out in 1979. It was not recorded by Roy Orbison, though it is reminiscent of his style. Raul Malo of the Mavericks did a very nice cover in 2006.

1979. Was a weird year for music. You had the impending doom of disco going the way of the dinosaur, country music starting to go back to its roots. And you have a song lime this which is such a mix of styles. Old school pop ala Roy orbinson, and it could have been played from the late 50s thru the 60s. Yet it's 1979. There are a few singer/ songwriter that don't care about genre or where to fit in and JT was one of those. A good song is a good song. No matter the genre.

Tge only movie I can think of that cones close to BJ's plotting is called THE HEAVENLY KID. A light comedy about a greater in the 6o's who dies and comes back to help someone. It's not quite the story BJ was spinning but close enough. If you take the story BJ tells, add Asia as the girlfriend. And have him look over her as she tries to move on. And find a way to come back to life, even if it is temporary. Give BJ a leather jacket, white socks, some black Chuck Taylor Converse, give him a hot rod, and the funny part will his slick backed hair, the cue this song, WHEN YOU'RE ORLY LONELY over the credits and pass the magazines. Meanwhile, you guys need to watch and pay tribute to the late Sidney Poitier. As the first black actor to win the Academy Award he deserves some attention. Films I recommend are, A PATCH OF BLUE TO SIR, WITH LOVE & a western he did called, BUCK AND THE PREACHER. I just saw your reaction to Tombstone and thought you might like this movie. Enjoy

I'm pretty sure you guys have covered some of those live Elvis Presley shows from Vegas where he has the huge band and the choirs and the black women in the Sweet Inspirations. Well, JD Souther heads up the male choir and he's mostly known for his record setting low bass voice. And yet on this he demonstrates a beautiful fairly high Roy Orbison type range and a beautiful falsetto. I had no idea he could sing up in that register! And he doesn't sing bass on this anywhere at all, wild.
