the guitar power chords at 00:19 and 00:21 either have a different EQ curve to the original, or are voiced slightly differently. (I suspect the former, as I assume the creator of this cover has sourced all the same samples, but if those chords were perhaps re-created manually, it could be the latter - but that would also introduce a whole new set of variables.) could be one or two other things as well, but basically they lack the weight of the fundamental, with too much emphasis placed on the upper structure of the chords, when compared to the original track. otherwise, this is a near-perfect 1:1 recreation, which is insanely impressive.
Dilla's original track almost definitely had the original sample doubled and hit with a low-pass filter to boost the bass frequencies which I didn't bother doing, though I did do some rudimentary EQ work to get the original sample closer to how he had it. He also used a heavy amount of compression over the main sample which I didn't do because this video is really more about showing how the chops were placed and samples layered rather than attempting to sonically mimic his production style
@@Cats-Eye there are endless ways to achieve a similar tone, no doubt. I'm genuinely astounded at how accurate everything you recreated is. of course there are going to be many differences in process and it's all about showcasing that it's talent, not gear which makes the difference. those guitar chords were like the only thing that stood out as noticeable. I won't lie - if I heard this video playing from an adjacent room I would have thought it was straight up Donuts bumpin'. well done. 🖖
