Man, this is what you call vision. He knew exactly what he wanted; the characters, their personalities, the songs they sing, their laughs and mannerisms, everything. I aspire to be like this.
to be fair he probably started with a faint idea and used his own personal experiences to bring color to the characters. While this sounds simple to do it takes a lot of creativity and commitment to actually create and produce. He's definitely good.
Here he definitely tried, Quintel just invested a little of his life and everyone around him, a lot of cool things from the past and present, and gave it life. It turned out to be a Regular Show, a cartoon uniting generations.
I was surprised they didn’t laugh at that scene because when it first aired, to me that was the funniest part. Especially with the sweatshirts cause we definitely were doing that at the time😂
@@foih_fg9 We don't expect a young kid to understand the difficulty of simultaneously storyboarding, writing, voice acting and coming up with great characters and building a world around them. In my opinion, only a genius could do that.
I mean, mordecai’s design is based off of a short JG made where a character that was based on him dropped acid with a coworker. The coworker turned into what would become benson and he turned into what would become mordecai. So technically they’re supposed to sort of look like each other ^^
The way I can remember this episode piece by piece in sync with JQ going thru the notes when I haven’t seen the episode in years just fills me with late nostalgia
saame! The songs and the facial expressions and everything. He was explaining it and it was like I could see the whole episode in my head. Sad times :(
Here he definitely tried, Quintel just invested a little of his life and everyone around him, a lot of cool things from the past and present, and gave it life. It turned out to be a Regular Show, a cartoon uniting generations.
It's a damn shame Close Enough got cancelled, but I hope J.G. keeps making more cartoons. I feel like he's already planning something, so it will happen. Also the one change that I find really bizarre is Rigby assaulting Pops. I guess it was changed because the idea of Rigby assaulting and old man is really messed, but honestly I'm glad we got the wizard pissing in the bushes instead, it's way funnier lmao.
Man idk if J.G realizes but this show really saved cartoon network. Every generation had its great shows and after the golden age shows like knd, billy and mandy and ed edd n eddys ends, J.G really kept CN going, which really led me to hope that one day I can be apart of this animation industry, producing stuff that I have talked about for years to come
Hmm, I wouldn’t say “saved” because Adventure Time was bigger than Regular Show during their runs imo. They also had Chowder and Flap Jack, and the OG Teen Titans. But Regular Show definitely contributed a lot into it.
@@ChikoTheOGDog lol wtf is Adventure Time compared to Goated Regular Show, Regular Show is up there with some of greatest cartoons ever im talking prime Simpsons and Spongebob
It's crazy to think how this show has been out for a little over 10 years as of now. Imagine that, a FULL DECADE since back in late 2010! I was starting my 2nd year in HS, and now I'm in my late 20's, and it STILL has that timeless appeal to it. CN made a GREAT choice getting this amazing show on their network!
In 2010 I was 7, I'm a sophomore in uni right now and I never knew how much shows like this would affect my life. I'm making video games now and I can't believe I ever made it past HS
Self inserting doesn't make you a bad writer. It's just easier to pull from your own life experiences than to make new ones. And the other characters don't suffer because of it.
I find the creation process of this really interesting, and it's cool to see what changes and what stays in. You can see that JG really loves what he does.
@Frogger I've done it with a game before, you grow to hate stuff as you work on it longer and longer or if you hate who you're working with. But it can still turn out good, you just hate it yourself because of the aforementioned reasons.
@@ChrisXIllustratesXGaming Shows like this and scooby doo aren't stoner comedy, it's just that all cartoons appeal to stoners lol. But in the case of shaggy he is definitely meant to be a stoner and mordecai and rigby are lazy/idiotic/underachievers so they have some stoner traits.
probably just took down the others after finishing up the first episode he was working on then put in the new ones for the next episode until he got a larger area to work with
The whole vibe of this room is so 90-2000s and I love it. It’s also cool how the girl came in for a closer look and couldn’t stop smiling and then more people come too. It really just comes to show how JG is just makes everything so engaging. He’s the type of guy I’d love to chill with till 3 am talking about life and cracking jokes with
I think it was just too dark for CN and it explains the magic aspect of the power more than giving a cereal company a thousand dollars because as Rigby and Mordecai said their poor
he was so busy explaining he didn't really expend much energy on expressing the magic of each scene, yet he does it with so much charisma its pretty amazing
I'm about 2 years late to this comment but you should try out Close Enough. It's by the same guy but feels a lot more like this pitch due to it being more adult oriented.
my dad is 51, hates everything on TV which is why he got rid of cable years ago but he absolutely loves Regular Show and it never fails to make him laugh even though he's seen every episode hundreds of times. i've never seen him laugh at anything harder than he does at this show
This feels like unbridled passion with no fear of failure. He went into that knowing how he wanted the characters to act, their vocabulary, their facial expressions, hell even the voices are pretty damn close. J.G. Quintel should be held in the highest esteem of writing and voice acting talents
Man the way he keeps the same tone and exitement from reading of sticky notes for 16 mins is crazy, only true passion of something can make you do that.
Honestly it’s crazy, how people were laughing irl in this vid, when typically when creators pitch shows, all the executives watching don’t/can’t laugh when getting pitched. So he’s just there giving out all this energy to a quiet crowd. JG is amazing.
This isn't an actual first pitch though. They all know how successful the show was and are probably fans themselves. If it was an actual pitch they'd have to actually be analyzing everything and weighing the good versus bad parts of whatever's being pitched; instead there's literally 0 pressure and nothing for the producers to actually think about. I guarantee the producers weren't laughing like that when he first pitched this episode.
@@jguerra0117 But it's not what you said though, you said JG was pitching to a quiet crowd of execs/producers when in fact he was re-pitching the show after its success to his team and aquaintsnces. They already knew the product was funny and laughed along. Is that to say he got no laughs at the original pitch, no, because he had to get some for the show to work. But either way, what Shellackle said was not what you said.
To be fair there's literally 0 pressure in this, you can't even rightfully call it a pitch. It's more like a recreation of his first pitch, but being able to turn the difficulty way down lmao
When I first saw The Power back in 2010, I was like "I'm sold. Bring on episode 2". The dialogue and Mordecai and Rigby's chemistry quickly became iconic. My friends and I couldn't stop quoting our favorite lines from the episode. I know it ended well but I still miss the show.
@@Hevletica I really wanna see a like 10 episode uncensored series of Quintel just reading storyboards of episodes that weren’t OK’d, or episodes he scrapped. Would be interested
@@-JimmyRustle- executives give more space once they know a show does well. This is the pilot so executives are much wary because it sets a precedent for what the show will be about.
Thanks J.G and everyone who helped make this show . My childhood was defined by regular show lmao. Re-watching the series at 22 is giving me so much happiness.
This was the first show that aired that I judged so hard because of how it looked and I just finished it after leaving off season 4 years ago, and honestly this is such an excellent, well written show, there's so much depth and it matches me perfectly
I'll never forget when my mom first got into watching Regular Show. I'd been watching it and I got the season 1&2 DVD. I remember watching it and she came in as the song "Hangin' Tough" By New Kids on the Block was playing during the montage of the Broken Bonez arcade game and she watched the rest of the episode with me. She watched a couple more and got hooked so now both of us love it. She is a HUGE New Kids fan and instantly recognized the song even after only hearing like 3 seconds of the beat.
God, it really amazes me how this man literally didn’t even put on a voice or other personality to do mordecai, it’s quite literally just him reading a script into the camera, which is funny in its own way.
They actually do this because it’s insanely hard for voice actors to copy someone’s actual voice! That’s why the voice actor of fry on futurama is the creator aswell!
@@thekidwhodoesnothing7512 he actually wasn’t the creator but the voice acting part I did remember correctly, it insured that they couldn’t replace him
One of the the most relatable animation series ever produced. Season 1 really foreshadowed most of what young adults were going through like looking in a mirror. His Netflix series definitely carries on the tradition. Except this time it's Adulthood. J G Quintell really is an genius in his craft. 👍
I've seen "The Power" probably like 20 times, and it's insane how the episode is almost a carbon copy of this rough storyboard, even down to the tone of the sound effects JG makes. There were only a few things that were different, like how Rigby didn't hambone on pops but instead stole the keyboard from a wizard that left it unguarded while taking a piss.
Yeah, I could do without the piss wizard. Pizzard is pretty mid, but I’m guessing they didn’t want Rigby to assault Pops since the guy’s disabled thanks to a TBI. Like yeah, Pops is beat up a lot, but not for a pilot episode for kids when parents are totally going to watch.
@@welpiguess I don't think I would ever be able to do this. Pitching an idea of something that I felt very close to me, to a bunch of quiet executives inside a room would cause me to have a mental breakdown. The anxiety coursing through my body would be enough for me to not even pitch it in the first place.
@@marcomendex8780 you have to be conscious at the fact that you're in charge in that room, they're all listening to you, you control the story line you control what they are watching when they can talk the duration of the pitch. i think once you sort of come aware of that fact the anxiety goes away to some extent but regardless you'll still have those nervess, you might have a really good idea that the world is missing out of because of anxiety
Regular Show was legendary, I was losing hope in Cartoon Network at the time and Regular Show kept it alive for me. As an adult now I still go back and watch some episodes from time to time for nostalgia or when I get high.
Here he definitely tried, Quintel just invested a little of his life and everyone around him, a lot of cool things from the past and present, and gave it life. It turned out to be a Regular Show, a cartoon uniting generations. And I'm glad that such people just exist and they continue to create something simple but legendary, it really inspires, and J. G. Quintel is just a cool man in himself.
If I ever meet this dude I’ll have to thank him for building my childhood memories! But to be honest this guy has the best emo haircut, except he’s super bubbly and happy!
@@b.mota_drumz My favorite part of the show is when Benson sees them fly through that shed and starts stress counting so Mordecai and Rigby start pumping their fist and cheering him on covered in pink paint. Then he gives them tinnitus later in the episode while he roasts them to a crisp anime battle syle
his doodles of every character are so cute and amazingly drawn. for cartoons they try to make designs simple so it's easy to animated but RS was still able to have its own unique look that was visually pleasing despite the restrictions (I'm talking about cartoons adopting "cal arts" style these days)
Regular Show was one of those perfect cartoons to unwind with after I'd come home from work, the stoner humor brought me right back to my late 90's high school years
I watched the episode before and I can picture the episode playing in my head so well. His storytelling is actually good lmao... I EVEN GOT HOOKED THROUGH THE WHOLE video.
I’m literally treating this video as if it’s a massive elaborate joke that JG is explaining to a group of friends and this makes both that pilot episode and this storyboard skit so much more funny.
@@juicyjuiciestjuice theyre not actually. storyboards have a more detailed vibe. theyre like the drafts of keyframes. thumbnails are just loose ideas that will possibly be changed
The show that kicked off the legendary run of one of the BEST Cartoon Network shows known to man. I grew up with this show and know every line and the entire plot of each episode. J.G Quintel, thank you for giving us this legendary gem
I would seriously watch an Adult Swim version where none of the cusses are censored...it would be really good....Regular Show was ahead of it's time and it definitely was a big part of my childhood
@@Da_Wang710 Close enough is the show made by the same people? I remembered hearing about it but i couldn't remember what it was. I need to figure out where i can watch that.
@@xriderthehero794 HBO MAX, everyone who loves this show, would GREATLY appreciate “Close Enough”. It’s actually sposed to be about JG himself!!!! And it’s definitely more for adults!
Regular Show is up there for me with one of the greatest cartoons ever. It was a such a sleeper hit. I remember seeing commercials for it and thinking "wow that looks weird and stupid", AND IT WAS EXACTLY THAT which made it hilarious. The mix of adult humor and slapstick comedy was amazingly done. And the characters were actually memorable. Good Show.
Regular show is such a masterpiece. It’s crazy how they can fit so much into 10 minute episodes and make a coherent story, i really hope they can come back to it in some capacity in the future.
I love how the few curse words throughout the script show JG was doing this totally from his heart and that this show was meant to be for everyone, this show was great man
