I'm astonished. this woman has been so extremely successful and yet she isn't arrogant at all and keeps writing good quality books not for more money or fame but because she is an essentially great writer. I am such a huge fan of hers
I see in her eyes most of the time a kind of melancholy I've only seen in people who have suffered a lot and she's one of those , her eyes are candid and melancholic not cold
People act surprised that her new book is so dark and has no magic in it. The Harry Potter series had many characters who died, starred an orphan boy who's fate could've easily been death, involved a dystopian government that refused to believe Voldemort was back, and a grave war that showed the best and the worst of people. The Casual Vacancy is a social commentary just like Harry Potter, but it isn't hiding behind magic.
I'm nearly at the half of The Casual Vacancy and don't quite know where it is leading, its plot is veeery different and special, but her writing is so brilliant that makes me wanting more and more. And also all the characters are so well-defined and are all a whole world. I love Jo, I really do.
Rihanna was not the inspiration for the book, she said she heard the song and thought it fitted in the story but the inspiration was her own live during tough times and the people she met during that time. and she chose the umbrella song becuase she said that when Jay Z raps in the beggining about they being rich and immune to problems that it isn't the truth.
I just started the book and I think it's brilliant! I was actually afraid to read it, afraid it wouldn't live up to the high standard that the Harry Potter books set. This book is just so real and honest, and that's what I really love about Jo, even when she was writing about a magical school called Hogwarts it was still so real. I do find the plotline of the new book a little on the dull side. I'm only 16 and would probably appreciate the book and it's content even more if I was an adult.
Do any of you remember taking English class and how you had to read out loud certain chapters or pages together, and then your teacher would stop the reading and talk about what you just read? That's actually what I do (except the part about reading the pages and chapters out loud). I like to read and then think about it in order to understand it.
I agree that as much as we all loved Harry Potter, why would she want to keep writing about the same stuff. I imagine she loved writing about it, but Harry Potter ended perfectly. Why add to something that doesn't need something added to it. I'm excited to see what she has in store for us next. I think that she is a great writer and that although she is not going to write about wizards and stuff of Harry Potter that we can expect great readings from her publishings.
I don't think she intentionally tries to act cold, I think it's all to do with the fact that she's an author and she isn't really that comfortable doing interviews and press work as maybe other artists, such as musicians and actresses would be, seeing as that's what they signed up for when they decided on their profession :)
You know, I love J.K. Rowling, but judging by the stuff I'm hearing people say about The Casual Vacancy (which I am LOVING) I've lost faith in like half her fanbase. (I won't mention how CV isn't even targeting REMOTELY the same fanbase as HP was.)
I have a question. I'm on page 123 of the German translation of Rowling's new book and I just wondered why Rihanna is misspelled ("Rhianna") twice on that page, if her song is sooooo perfect and important for this book. If anybody who reads my comment has the original English book, would you be so kind to tell me whether Rihanna is written right there or not?
By the sounds of it, one of the characters is singing it and the irony comes in that she is singing lyrics that are completely opposite to where the character is in her life. Originally seeing Rihanna and J.K. Rowling in the same breath did churn my stomach a bit though!
No, as much as every Harry Potter fan wants more Hogwarts stories, Rowling stated that Harry Potter would always remain in her heart, and that she enjoys releasing information on Pottermore, but there will be no more Harry Potter. And let's face it, if you were an author, would you only want to be known for one of your works, like Arthur Conan Doyle, Victor Hugo, Mary Shelley, and even Tolkien? As much as I love Harry Potter, I think that it ended perfectly, and that nothing needs to be added.
you should save these kind of judgements til after you read the book and you know what you are talking about. I just finished the book and I am no fan of Rihanna either - and I think you'll agree if you read it, it's used well
@potkettle1 I know that everyone hates twilight series and how J.k.'s writing is so much better , but didn't you notice you went a little bit far, calling Stephanie meyer's a trashy and pathic , how ever she writes you like it your welcome you don't like go on your way .. I'm just giving my point and I'm not trying to talk rude okay, she didn't insult you or anyother with her writing so don't insult her too.. By the way all the super reviews of this book makes me want to buy
"Harry hasnt left me to the degreee that i thought he would" YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS basically she's admitting thats sheS writing more potter. JK just throw away all your other manuscripts....Vacancy was rubbish-JUST WRITE HARRY!!!
JK Rowling is a good writer, but this book was so dull. I don't quite feel any connections to the characters. It was boring, and the story to me was just dull. It was not very flowing, and I lost interest quite a lot. Just my opinion, hope "smart asses" dont come in with "You're clearly still a kid not understanding adult books...". i am not really a harrry potter fanboy either. I was not totally into it. Books 3,4,5, was interesting, did not really like the others, but her writing style drew me
I absolutely loved the Harry Potter books but this book The Casual Vacancy ,l personally found a compete waste of time reading it. Most of the characters were nasty, and a dreadful ending. Only good for the recycle bin. 😩😩😩
She only ever mentions this when she's selling something or using it to criminalize trans people. Which also means she's criminalizing people with OCD. Also her OCD character was a terrible description of OCD she's lying about this the same way she lied about being poor.
AHHHHHHHHH I LOVE HER! O_O I CAN'T WAIT TO GET MY GRUBBY HANDS ON THAT BOOK. I've been waiting soooooo long! There's no way her writing can ever be a disappointment. And she's so humble and amazing! and charming! It's been an hour and 32 minutes since it's out :( But I won't get the book until they deliver it to my dorm. *sigh* MUST. WAIT. PATIENTLY!.
