J Mascis on His Signature EHX Ram's Head Big Muff

One of my most favorite memories was being asked by J to introduce him to Elliott Smith in Luna Lounge on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in NYC... What an awesome request and I am so filled with joy knowing that in that moment that I was the one who brought them together. I miss Elliott but am so glad to see and hear J after all these years...

I remember reading an interview with J in the 90s in one of the guitar magazines. He said he stopped at every music store while on tour and would buy every big muff he found.

While others have fallen by the wayside, J’s music has been a part of my life since the late ‘80s. Yes, I’m old. ;-)

I have one of the 90's Big muff, the Giant metal box one (exactly the same as jack white). This is enormous on my pedal board but i love it, it's built like a russian tank. I've tried several new ones which are a lot smaller but i never found one with the same sound. I'm waiting to try this one out !

My favourite pedal is my Big Muff. I'm glad they're still so cheap and accessible too. Also glad they're unfashionable atm, y'all can keep your RATS. Keep flying the flag J.

My first pedal was a green Sovtek Big Muff, totally because of J. Also got a DOD FX33 Buzz Box at the same time, because Melvins. Miss both, though I do still have the Muff knobs at least! 😆

out of all my guitars and amps the one thing I worry about getting stolen is my pedal board, so when he started hoarding them I feel that. I can replace everything except some of the pedals

Question for Reverb / EHX - is there any difference in the circuit between this and the recent Rams Head RI, or is it just cosmetic? Either way, great looking / sounding pedal.

J Mascis is a righteous dude. The sportos, motorheads, geeks, bloods, wasteoids, dweebies--they all adore him.

It's rare that I'll sit through a 5 and half minute commercial, but I can't not watch J on camera.

Very cool, congrats! I've been through many distortion pedals, but the big ol' muff has earned it's spot as the only OD on my board. You just can't stay away from that thick, silver fuzz!

the guy has a whole room full of muff's, ehx builds his own model, and he is still comforted by the fact that its much easier to get another vintage one on the internet these days. that is real love.

I tried his muff in store and thought it sounded a little more tame and soft compared to other muffs. I still dont know the guy but I love these videos with gear collections.

Man, I just love the way J's Muff sounds. I could never quite dial in that sound. Maybe now I can! (and that's my internal dialog to justify the purchase of yet another big muff! Because I know I will. :)

Jay's my great influence, he's my guitar hero. Interestingly i didn't know he uses the muff with fuzz and volume maxed out so his signature pedal should be borned with only one knob, the tone one. Thanks, i love teratology and i now fancies building a muff in a wha shell and treadledum my dinosauroucus licks away from those lame EHX lego pedals.
