Just remember that this man died in the middle of the cold war, the world was at the brink of a nuclear war and the possibility of human extinction. He lived and died having to deal with the thought that his invention would destroy mankind.

When you don’t understand that he was in a race with Germany to making the atomic bomb. He preferred to have the atomic bombs in the allied powers hands than the Nazi Regime. Only reason Hitler wasn’t focused on the atomic bomb right away was because a Jew was the one who proved the theory of nuclear fission. However Oppenheimer did not know when Hitler will focus on the idea of the atomic bomb. Basically the reason he focused on the atomic bomb was for many reasons, 1. so that the allied powers have the hands on the nuclear weapon and 2. So that the war could be ended sooner and many allied powers lives could be saved.

The text he is referrring to(bhagavad gita, chapter 11, verse 32) states the quota as time and that all the people in the upcoming battles are alredy dead, killed by their god and so the king shall not fear the fight, as all enemys are dead alive
In fact, Oppenheimer is quoting a phrase in Hindu, which says that someone is persuading the prince, and that he manages to have many arms, then the prince says "I have become death, the destroyer of worlds". Then at the end Oppenheimer says that, in some way, everyone thinks this way.
