One Of Bach's best.
The Cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach (German: Bachkantaten) consist of at least 209 surviving works.
As far as is known, Johann Sebastian Bach's earliest surviving cantatas date from 1707, the year he moved to Mühlhausen (although he may have begun composing them at his previous post at Arnstadt). Most of Bach's cantatas date from his first years as Thomaskantor (director of church music in Leipzig), a position which he took up in 1723. Working especially at the Thomaskirche and the Nikolaikirche, it was part of his job to perform a church cantata every Sunday and Holiday, conducting soloists, the Thomanerchor, and orchestra as part of the church service. In his first years in Leipzig, starting after Trinity of 1723, it was not unusual for him to compose a new work every week.[1] Works from three annual cycles of cantatas for the liturgical calendar have survived. These relate to the readings prescribed by the Lutheran liturgy for the specific occasion. He composed his last cantata probably in 1745.
In addition to the church cantatas, Bach composed sacred cantatas for functions like weddings or Ratswahl (the inauguration of a new town council), music for academic functions of the University of Leipzig at the Paulinerkirche, and secular cantatas for anniversaries and entertainment in nobility and society, some of them Glückwunschkantaten (congratulatory cantatas) and Huldigungskantaten (homage cantatas).
His cantatas usually require four soloists and a four-part choir, but he also wrote solo cantatas for typically one soloist and dialogue cantatas for two singers. The words for many cantatas combine Bible quotes, contemporary poetry, and chorale, but he also composed a cycle of chorale cantatas based exclusively on one chorale.

I’m my opinion this is Bachs best Cantata. What makes it is the great continuo and strict counterpoint which demonstrates heavily to anyone new to Baroque music, what polyphony is all about. It’s that pleasing to the ear that one has to repeat the video multiple times before sleeping. And Sato is amazing

"... Hard to explain what I mean ..." ; No, it obviously isn't - every word was as crystal clear (to me) as that incredible music that Bach wrote (in his own manuscript - for all those instruments & vocalists) and also rewrote (or had copied by his students) so it could be rehearsed and performed in public to huge worshiping congregation audiences - probably the weekend after it was first written ! Thank God & Bach that we still have hugely talented performers that eagerly seek out his music and keep it alive for us three hundred years later. It makes me weep for joy.

(Since we last spoke at Mother's Market, since relocated, I've known an Asghari or two, and one taught me, at last, how to put the accent on the right syllable of your last name: Sar-a-FI! ;-} ) "Bravi e grazie tutti, molto gentile!" (My mother passed, at 91, not many weeks after I last saw you, the night when I was still with her, as you were exiting the library where I'm now posting this, and since then worlds spun, turned, and changed many times in the meanwhile. But I now at least have a lovely Yamaha piano! All the better to salute you, Darius. Kayli Mamnoon for the invites, around that time, to your "homeland" virtuoso friend's concert at the Irvine Bowl, which I was too hard-pressed then to attend. Hope your "polyphony" is still as vibrant as ever!)

1. Sinfonia 2. Chorus We give You thanks, God, we give You thanks and tell of Your great deeds. 3. Aria T Hallelujah, power and might be the names of the Most High! Zion is still His city, where He has His dwelling, where He still with our offspring remembers the covenant of our fathers. 4. Recitative B Praise God! It is well for us! God is still our confidence, His protection, His comfort and light shields the city and the palaces, His wings hold the walls fast. He brings blessing to us in all places, faithfulness, which kisses peace, must for ever and ever greet righteousness. Where is such a people as we, to whom God is so near and so gracious! 5. Aria S Consider us with Your love, enclose us within Your mercy! Bless those who rule us, who lead, protect and guide us, Bless those who are obedient to them! 6. Recitative A and Chorus Do not forget later, with Your hand to reveal Your goodness to us; so shall our city and our land, full of Your honor, praise You with offerings and with thanks, and all the people shall say: - Amen! - 7. Aria A Hallelujah, power and might be the names of the Most High! 8. Chorale Glory, and praise with honor be to God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit! He will increase in us what He has promised us out of grace, so that we trust fast in Him, abandon ourselves completely to Him, rely on Him within our hearts, so that our heart, will, and mind should depend on him comfortingly; therefore we sing at this time: Amen, we shall succeed, if we believe from the depths of our hearts.

Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir (We thank you, God, we thank you), BWV 29, is a sacred cantata. It was composed it in Leipzig in 1731 for Ratswechsel, the annual inauguration of a new town council, and first performed it on 27 August of that year. The cantata was part of a festive service in the Nikolaikirche. The lyrics were composed by an unknown author and they include in movement 2 the beginning of Psalm 75. As closing the lyrics include the fifth stanza of Johann Gramann's "Nun lob, mein Seel, den Herren". Bach scored the work in eight movements for four vocal parts and a festive Baroque orchestra of three trumpets, timpani, two oboes, strings, an obbligato organ and basso continuo. The organ dominates the first movement Sinfonia which Bach derived from a Partita for violin. The full orchestra accompanies the first choral movement and plays with the voices in the closing chorale, while a sequence of three arias alternating with two recitatives is scored intimately. Bach used the music from the choral movement for both the Gratias agimus tibi and Dona nobis pacem of his Mass in B minor.

what's wild is that he wasn't even popular. In fact, his chorale-preludes on organ were often complained about because they were "too complicated" and "obscured" the melody or cantus firmus. So even though he was moderately popular among musicians, it wasn't until like... a century after his death that he got the recognition he deserved, when Mendelssohn "revived" his music in concerts, when complex counterpoint was a lot more popular in the Romantic era.

@@JohnJohnson-yi6jg Well, he certainly started out on the harpsichord in his early attempts at musical composition, as in his six fabulous Bach-on-Vivaldi transcriptions of concerti grossi by the Venetian priest -- whom he termed "Der grosser roser Geistliche Viivaldi" (his mentor). He also wrote a number of particularly great concerti grossi for one or more harpsichords, strings and continuo, including his transcription of what I call the Vivaldi B-minor, his Op 3, 10, for four violins, strings and continuo, in which Bach substituted four harpsichords for the solo violins

This collection of work by the Netherlands Bach Society has been such a glorious find! I just wish I new German. I discovered Bach--or Bach discovered me--when I was an amateur chorus singer in the Oberlin Musical Union at Oberlin College when I was a student there with no idea yet that I was heading to a theological education and pastoral career. It was the Christmas Oratorio, two Passion, and the B Minor Mass that awakened me, a life-long church goer with my family, to the possibility that God and "this Christian thing" might be real. Bach obviously knew it was! I wish I knew more about how it came to be so powerfully real for him.
@ifyouloveChristyouwillobeyhim
I encourage you to take up German as a hobby! Even a couple minutes a day was enough for me to get to a point where I can follow along and enjoy Bach, even if I can't translate word-for-word perfectly. I'm grateful to hear about your re-awakening. I hope it's a genuine rebirth by the Holy Spirit. May he help you see your sin, and see Christ for who he is. May he be your light, him personally. Read the Bible with open ears and pray, my friend!

Thank you for the organ solo on the church's organ as J S Bach had intended the piece, and not on a positive organ (the "continuo organs") which have become the ubiquitous flavor of the month for Period Instrument Groups and augmented the previously additions of lute/theorbo and baroque guitars, lovely instruments that they are. Some groups use these for works originally written for orchestras that never had musicians on the payroll or a record of such instruments being available. This is a lovely performance,

The Sinfonia is famous in its own right and was used in one or two other pieces by Bach, originally one of the Violin partitas. The second movement is recast as the Gratias agimus tibi from the B minor mass, which is a setting of a similar text in Latin anyway. It also recurs as the Dona nobis pacem in the same work.
