I never thought this to be possible...playing the Bach Chaconne on the piano is difficult enough, but playing it on a Marimba??? Absolutely fascinating to watch and certainly listen to. Very well done!!!
Viola player studying the Chaconne here. RU-vid suggested this to me and I clicked out of curiosity. At first, I was put off by the real chords versus the broken chords I need to play, but... the performance is so amazing that after a little bit, I was completely lost in the music. Masterful interpretation. Thank you for sharing this, and letting me hear this marvelous piece in a new way.
I can feel his huge coordination for playing this so amazingly. It sounds really nice! And his control on dynamics is everything. I feel so satisfied when I hear this instrument now.
I have transcribed, studied, and played (on guitar) the Bach's monumental Chaconne for many years and your version is among the most evocative and communicative that I have ever listened to, on any instrument. It isn't just about tempo, dynamics, or even accuracy. The ability to carry the tension throughout the piece, to relieve it somewhat in the appropriate places without prematurely resolving it completely and not lose the thread, well that is an art not many have mastered. Excellent phrasing, and considering that you have to work within a limited dynamic range (limitations of the instrument, not the player!) with little inherent sustain, absolutely stunning rendition!
My first thought was ( like some other commentators also said): Is this possible? After a few minutes I was astounded! This is really beautiful! Of course the piece gets a completely new character when not played on violin, but it is very nice and soft. Perhaps people who like the powerful versions by Perlman or Heifetz will not agree. As I like the "softer" violin version of Julia Fisher (and some other), this interpretation is remarkable.
Boseman is easily in the top 2 versions. I prefer the feeling and emotion that comes through. Does it for me. Transported spiritually. Mika Stoltzman is the other. Bogdan too loud and mechanical for me. Back usually works period. But I think this piece especially requires feeling and emotion to pull it off.
