I wanted to bring you an updated version of this piece, for a few reasons. Firstly, you wanted more Bach! Secondly, we felt we could record a better performance of this now than in 2012 when the original video was posted. Thirdly, while we were visiting Hindhead Music Centre to shoot the Air video, I was reminded of learning this piece with my first teacher, quite possibly in this room, where I had my lessons when the concert hall featured in Air wasn't available. For many years this part of the house was private to all but my teacher's harp pupils and so it has a wonderful secrecy to it that I always enjoyed. In later years when I became a teacher at HMC I sometimes gave lessons in this room and somehow that always seemed very special to me, like I was letting my kid pupils in on a secret that only harpists were allowed to know! I actually took a photo of the sign I put up on the front door the first time I had to teach there just saying "Amy is teaching in the drawing room today!" It sounds so dumb but I was really excited about it. It was like passing on my heritage.
What can I say about this piece. It's just a masterful show of a journey through harmony. I love that the repetition of rhythm/shape throughout not only gives the modulations a chance to be the star, but the simplicity of the piece also gives each performer a chance to put their mark on it. No two performers will play this piece the same, as there's so much scope to just... enjoy it and let your "youness" seep into the music. Someone could make a very interesting study of analysing a bunch of musicians playing this. I'd love to hear the results.
Hindhead Music Centre is a music tuition centre in Surrey, UK. I studied there for 11 years with Ann Hughes-Chamberlain, who founded the school. It is a magical and special place and I highly recommend their summer schools even if you're not local...!
www.hindheadmusiccentre.co.uk
Thank you:
Ben Turk - Director, audio, post-production
John Hoskison - Camera op, post-production
Ann Hughes-Chamberlain for letting us film at HMC, and for a lifetime of being inspiring and believing in me.

This performance is a jewel that I'll enjoy listening to many times - like Amy's Toccata. Things I like: She plays it allegro yet plays so beautifully that it feels un-rushed. The sound of the track itself (The harp has a wonderful resonating sound). The focus of her playing (no wincing or eyes-closed-drama yet an emotional connection every second). Her virtuoso black dress. Like she's the Ambassador of the Harp. The opening image of Hindhead and the background in the room. Every second is captivating. My favorite part is 1:50 onwards - brilliant musical interpretation.

Thank you, Amy. This is one of my all time favorite Bach pieces. Perfect tempo. Now, all you have to do is make one of your duets with the Gounod Ave Maria! I also enjoyed your comments about your experiences as a teacher of harp. With your passion for the music, I'm sure your students were inspired to continue their studies.

J. S. Bach one of the greatest composers that ever lived! Amy you do a wonderful job of skillfully playing his Prelude No. 1 in C Major. I like C Mayor! A very nice key indeed! Since you are located in England I can say cheerio! I decided to subscribe to your channel as I enjoy harp music very much. I understand harps are tuned to 442 and harpists use piano music when sight reading. Greetings from sunny Florida USA😀❤☝🎼🎵🎶

Absolutely lovely, Amy... and perfectly played. 💖 I likewise learned this, but on piano, at age eight, and have played and performed it so many hundreds of times over the decades that it is forever at the front of my mind and at my fingertips. But it is a Special treat and honor when I get to play it on a Steinway concert grand which, sadly, happens only rarely. I did not get to hear your earlier recording of this, but this one is just beautiful, and you and Ben should be very proud of this recording. Na kaleka aloha mai Hawai'i... 🌴🌈

I'm preparing this for Grade 4 and even though Betty Paret's arrangement doesn't explicitly arpeggiate the final chord, I've been doing it anyway...and... I'm just glad to find that decision backed up here XD I guess this happens a lot with harp. Drawing squiggly lines on all the chords would make the printers run out of ink!

Thank you for making an old favorite new again. Your personal story makes it even more heartwarming. Seriously, please put your recordings up for paid download! Even $5 per track is a steal for this artistry. My wife and I are expecting a baby Christmas Day. I would love to have high-quality recordings so I can play them as a lullaby for our newborn. Except that Gwyn piece, which is terrifying.
@amyturkharp
@amyturkharp 7 лет назад
Agreed about Gwyn, but that's kind of that music's purpose! I really love how unsettling it is but I put it down to my teenage goth years, which are still bubbling under somewhere within. Really sad music like that has always spoken to me. YES, this track will be available to buy. DEFINITELY before Christmas. When it is the link will be in the video description. And good luck with the babe!
