Following an old tradition, in the 17th century German composers used to open their sacred compositions with a short instrumental introduction, which they usually called sinfonia. This video includes the complete selection of sinfonias from J.S. Bach’s cantatas featuring the Early Music ensemble Netherlands Bach Collegium, and conducted with passion by Pieter Jan Leusink.

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) continued this tradition: his instrumental introductions were magnificent virtuosic sinfonias with concertato instruments that introduced the splendid atmosphere of the court chapel into the world of municipal church music, reminding listeners that their composer was the former kapellmeister of the Prince of Anhalt-Cöthen, a title he still used.
Renowned conductor Pieter Jan Leusink heads a stellar line-up of musicians in the Netherlands Bach Collegium, playing entirely on period instruments. Praised for their ‘characteristic performances, marked by a great sense of authenticity’ (Gramophone), the recordings were produced for the ‘Bach year’ 2000, 250 years since the composer’s death.
