Had some welcome feedback and questions concerning the side by side images that appear about 2 minutes into this video: "Could you please comment on the trim differences between the Outhaul, Vang, Cunningham, Backstay, Traveler, and Main-Sheet between the two modes of strong wind Main Sail trim in the picture on left vs right?" Trim on left side: traveler all the way to leeward, main sheet max, vang max, outhaul max, cunnigham max, backstay max. Trim on right side: Traveler (car) just above center, boom just below center (and adjusted to maintain helm balance and heel). mainsheet eased (a few inches) to allow top of main to twist open, vang may need a touch of ease as well (though you may get enough twist just with mainsheet ease - max vang helps create low bend - just don’t break the boom!) outhaul max, c’ham max, backstay max. NOTE 1: If it is very wavy then a touch of ease of outhaul and backstay can add some low punch without adding too much heel. NOTE 2: Match jib to main: On Left: Lead aft, sheet on, in-hauler (if you have one) eased a few inches. Headstay tight. Halyard tight. On Right: A couple inches of sheet ease. Perhaps a little lead forward and inboard. Headstay tight. Halyard tight.
Bill, excellent info packed into 4 minutes! Could you explain about using the vang upwind on a keelboat? If the vang is hard on, how is the sheet used to control the twist? It seems that the sheet is now just changing the angle of attack. What do you mean by "low bend" in your comment below? Cheers!
