George is sitting in his car when he sees Jack Benny walking across a busy LA street. So he rolls down the window and yells frantically for Jack to come over as if it was an emergency. Jack dodges and weaves his way against traffic as he gets to Georges's car to ask what the emergency is. At this point, George rolls up the window and drives off. Benny crumbles in the street laughing hysterically.
The story about Jack seeing George Burns at the Brown Derby Restaurant is another funny one. Jack and his wife were sitting in the restaurant when George and Gracie came in. Jack tells his wife that George just came and and tells her not to pay attention to him. So, During all this time George is trying to get Jack's attention. After dinner Jack calls for the check and gets up and tells the waiter while waving to George, "See that man over there? Give the check to him, he'll take care of the check." And Jack and his wife walk out of the restaurant leaving George with paying his check.
oh I love this one so much. Like the famous story from Houstonian Gus Wortham's legendary poker game. Retold so many times, details vary, but the punchline was along the lines of who do you think marked the cards.
According to some of his writers who I've heard being interviewed, Jack regularly did thank them. He was known for being a fantastic editor of the scripts; he'd add or remove a beat between lines, take out an extra word here or there, and the writers who were interviewed said he was always right. He also argued with them once that a specific joke wasn't funny, but he agreed to leave it in. The writer in question said that many comedians of the day would have delivered the line flat so they'd be proven right, but Jack gave it what it deserved, and when the audience laughed he looked over to where the writers were seated and gave them a wink and kept on going with the show.
