Description
This is a BBC Masterclass from about 1977. The original idea was to have one Jazz and one Classical clarinet, plus one each for Double Bass with Gary Karr. I think the money ran out, or after watching the first one they decided not to continue.
The sound and video quality are poor, as this has been transferred through many formats over the years, but Jack does play the last movement of the Brahms Eb towards the end. There seems to be little actual footage of Jack playing other than in the orchestra.
The very observant might spot Jacks wife, Joan, in the audience along with Mike Pearce, ( BBC Concert Orchestra, Philharmonia, etc.). I hope Maureen spots this and doesn't mind me posting it.

Jack Brymer was my mentor even though we never ever met...his sound and approach to playing was my inspiration...he just made it sound so easy. My favorite concert was when he played the Copland with Copland conducting at the RFH on Copland's 80th birthday

Thanks for posting this absolutely marvelous masterclass. So many great ideas on technique and musical interpretation.

Wonderful! Mr. Brymer is so clear and articulate. He also had a beautiful speaking voice and enunciated so elegantly. This was bound to, and did, rub off on his playing. I love the vocal sound of the big-bore clarinets: Boosey 1010s, I would reckon. Thank you for posting this.

Bellissimo!!! Che modo d'insegnare gentile e accurato allo stesso tempo, ed e' il movimento che sto imparando.

Thank you once again Colin. Love your playing. And it’s great to hear the great B&H 1010 contrasted with the French Buffet instrument. It’s always a joy to hear the great Jack Brymer. Unsurpassed. God bleed you. Bill. UK

Mr Brymer was a great musician in all fields of Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Music and solo clarinet. He could play Jazz too ! I believe that he would turn up at the dance hall in South Shields with saxophone and clarinet in hand and join in. He made a great recording years ago of Eric Coates Saxo Rhapsody. I have never heard a greater musician who played the clarinet! Unsurpassed!!! Jack had his own individual sound and knew that it was him playing. Thank you Colin for posting this We were just talking about Mr Brymer today then your video came up tonight. God Bless you and yours. Bill. UK

I don't know how Jack Brymer ever managed, without weird bells and barrels.

Jack could play on a chair leg and still sound great. He was a great musician who played the clarinet ! His sound was distinctive and a great proponent of " the English School of playing" He was of course a great orchestral player. I sometimes think that the BBC library probably has lots of His recording! I hope that young players will be able to hear his recordings. Just listen to his playing of the Brahms sonata !Jack Brymer is very much missed. Bill. UK

Anyone else remember a radio programme he did for many years, just for the general listener, not the music nerd :-) ? It might have been called "These you have loved", or "Music you love" or something like that. It had a haunting introductory tune, which later I guessed might have been played by Jack himself on the clarinet. If I ever discovered the name of the piece, I'm afraid I've forgotten the name of it. If anyone else remembers the programme, and even better, the name of that piece, I'd be very interested to hear from you.

Hello Colin! Remembering you from RCM days. I did a masterclass with Jack a little before that time - he had such a great way of making it about the student and the music, not about him. Do you still look as young as in this video?

Hello Walter. How nice to hear from you after 40 years. Of course I look exactly the same as I do in the Masterclass! Permanently petrified! Hope you are well and still playing.

Just seen your reply - sorry for the delay! Yes, still playing and much else besides. I gather kevin Banks is still in touch with you. I'll try and write again before another 40 years are up!

So much different than the stiff German and Austrian school of playing. It's like they are black and white TV with mono sound and the English school is a color TV with stereo sound.
