Jack was great. and Seasick Steve did ONE HELL of a job 1. to follow jack white 2. to have technical difficulties 3. with only 3 strings on his guitar wow...
This actually is an excellent performance. Like you said, Jack can "sing" when he wants to. He sings like he does in the studio because he has to have at least some mainstream appeal, but at heart Jack is a bluesman, and he sings like one. It's not that he's not trying in his live performances, it's just he's really cutting loose, and it's awesome.
"There's more black gadgets than faces" Notice his reference to more people living through their phones and tablets instead of enjoying a great day in a great city watching a great musical artist.
That's the thing...everyone keep saying Jack sounded like shit and whatever. But it doesn't matter if he plays perfectly or not, doesn't matter if you can hear the words, all that matters is the feel. If he feels like playing it like on this record or that you just gotta feel it. Blues or rock don't have to be perfect. It's about the feel. Same about romance, it doesn't have to be perfect unless you feel it. It's about romance, thruth and feels. He's not trying to be perfect, he's trying to feel it as much as he can. That's a real music.
+Nevil Riker He has lots of talent. Check out the work he did on Cold Mountain. They had a tour, something like, Music of Cold Mountain, and it was really awesome stuff if you like string bands and bluegrass.
A real professional, all real musicians believe in "the show must go on", not walk away like a baby it there are equipment and tech problems.... they just play it!
+alpha java agreed! I've had many things go wrong onstage and you just have to roll with it. My band played a new years eve show and the amps for the main PA blew up so we tipped the monitors on their sides and turned them to face the crowd and played the show that way. It wasn't very loud and it didn't sound very good but it was that or nothing at all
Im 20 and i just started learning guitar, watching how people can play with such joy and confidence inspired me to pick it up, doubt i'll get any where near that good anytime soon, but seeing stuff like this makes me feel committed
@@forestgump1667 Ended up losing interest in a lot of things for a long while. Havent tried to play in some time. I cant remember much of what i learned either, tho i did rush through it lol
I love the sound of the puny amps out in the parking lot - I am old, so it brings me back to the 60's battle of the bands type performances. Love this guy.
That guy sitting down wearing sunglasses is probably wishing he was at a maroon 5 concert, he's just playing on his phone not even watching Seasick Steve.
I first viewed this about two years ago. It's what got me started buying Seasick Steve music. Some people like flash, some like substance, some want both. I like it all.
Jack White is a fucking magician, when he does Dead Leaves and The Dirty Ground he drops his pick onto his middle and ring finger, then somehow gets it back into the regular position between his thumb and index. I noticed cuz I'm a guitarist, and that's some tricky shit. So props to him for that, I know it's pretty insignificant, but I thought it was cool.
Jack White seemed to give less effort in this performance. For those of you judging him on this one performance i'd look up his Jimmy Falon performance or one of his concerts. He is a creative, talented, unique minded soul. He has a ton of potential and a lot to give to the music industry. If you don't at least see that much i'm not sure why you are watching this video.
the white stripes got me into jack white. I've heard some amazing stuff that makes me a fan. he is awesome. Watch 'Under Black Pool Lights' and tell me that's not rock 'n roll. 'It Might Get Loud' is great also. Jack is amazing. This video was not so great but I loved it because I am a fan and not the opposite. Turns out Seasick Steve is also dope. Myself and many more rocked out to this. So go home eletists.
What part of surprise show don't y'all get? With surprise shows, there's no rehearsals no playing at the venue, no preparations. So its gonna be a little raw. But its REAL music!
I clicked on this video because it has "Jack White" in the title. But Seasick Steve was the highlight of this video for me. I'm glad that I now know his music.
Watch it might get loud and say he's a bad guitar player. He makes a guitar out of scrap junk and jams it. He didn't get where he is by playing shitty. Rock on Jack!
+thewoodsystyle he probably go where he is by having a red and white striped stage; white make up and a sexy drummer - oh and he can play and sing a little
For real. Jack is an amazing guitarist. I think him and John Mayer are the best of my generation. Jack had success because he could write melody. Same with anything popular.
Yeah Buddy ! Jack was Excellent !!!!!! SNL I gotta re watch that ASAP ! Well rehearsed, Band was tight and it was reminiscent of the good ol days of Rock & Roll !!!!
Jack White really likes a raw sound, like all emotion and no technique. I think he once said that he liked playing with plastic guitars, cause he liked fighting against that, and getting a good sound out of anything.
+Rob Pitashe Yeah but I think he knows, after all he decided to open for the guy. Jack White is a living legend but he knows his limitations. I've never seen Jack White boast about him being a good guitar player or singer, quite the contrary he's always saying that he's shit, but he just wants it to be emotional and engaging. And well... he's not shit, I mean he's definitely a pro top tier guitar player, people like me wouldn't imagine to get on his playing level, but say compared to Jimmy Page or B.B. King... He's in their league but he's more in the Cobain sub-tier... raw emotional, not on point, always different... Some say that's the genius of Jack White but sometimes it's really weird, it seems that he's just unable to play the same song the same way twice...
I agree I love Jack White . The only reason he is opening for jacks record label is becasue Jack begged him to frankly. There is an article on it. Much mutual respect but Seasick plays in front of 100k people in UK. He is not nearly as big in the states. Mad respect to them both. I just think Seasick has more emotion, more engaging. I agree though with your assessment of Jack White He plays with sincerity. If I was to be asked what kind of music do you like? I like sincere music. Which Is why I love them both very much at have to be in very different moods. I don't think seasick plays anything same way twice either, part of both of their genius. Seasick guitars and tuning alone wouldn't allow for an identical sound you can see this by his live shows. Thurston Moore once said there is nothing worse than Perfectly Produced Error Free Music it has no soul.
he really enjoys his playing and performing, i really respect him more than most of the hacks out today. a guitar and an amp not a fucking million dollar production just jamming . awesome..
lmao great now im gonna go do heroin get a 5 dollar milkshake and not a reference to the movie but beat off to veronique vega she looks like my 3rd gf that lasted more than 3 months...aight i be back
When it comes to tuning there's perfect, close enough for rock 'n' roll, then there's Jack White. I don't know how he gets away with it, but he just does.
wonder the same, I know you can do one from a old telephone's microphone. then all you have to do is set the gain high enough to distort the amplifier.
Are you serious, these young folks are fucking texting while Seasick Steve is playing? Im fuckin 18 and the lack of respect these fools have makes me sick. Makes me seasick!! THIS IS FUCKING RAW!!!!
i agree completely but then i wonder.. how will i watch it on youtube... if i'm at a venue and people are recording or taking selfies next to the mosh or in an inappropriate place where jumping is going on.... i may accidentally bump toward them more often than not
Anyone seen the "It Might Get Loud" film? Theres a bit in there where he has a brand new guitar, lays it down and stamps all over the neck. It was a beautiful moment
Every musician should watch this video. So much to learn from. Of course musically but also It's incredible how the cable fuck up only made steve get deeper into the groove. He turned it into a good thing that happened. Brilliant!
I'm TOTALLY...Unimpressed. I've heard this name for some time... So..THIS??...LOL.. Please tell me what there is with this guy...that you can't find on 'talent night'...at practically ANY club anywhere in the United States!...
Rowlandph I've gotta agree. I've heard his name for awhile now, and not familiar with his music. He was in Anchorage just last night for a 'surprise concert' at the college for 3 bucks a head. A few thousand young people stood in line in some less than ideal weather for a chance to see him. I can't put the guy down for what he's doing, more power to him if he can sell it, but like you, I can go down to any of several bars in town and see a more satisfying show most any night. I suppose he speaks to the current generation or something. But hats off to him for providing a concert for 3 bucks! Apparently money is not his chief motivator. And I'd rather see 1,000 shaggy hipsters touring around than just one Justin Bieber.
Good analysis. I'm more like 30 years behind the times. I haven't caught up with that whole Seattle grunge thing. But I did check out some of his other music including earlier stuff with White Stripes and I kinda like it. But I respect the guy for keeping old blues style music alive.
unabonger777 I have little interest in what passes for rock and pop these days... I'm more into jazz guitar...and frankly, this guy would at any time in his career ...be LOST in about 20 seconds...if he were jamming with lots of jazz players.. THAT'S why I'm unimpressed with him... He has such a big name for such meager talent...when it comes to guitar playing...And yet, we'll see these guys all over the 'Best Guitarist' lists that come out every now and then... To each his own..and obviously, you like him...or did. This video came up on my page when I logged on one day....and that's the only reason I played it...Just to see what he'd do with an acoustic... Not much.
+Lisa L Consider the quality of the audio in this video though. Pick one up and play it for yourself before you decide, don't let poor audio on a RU-vid video be your deciding factor.
+Aaron Rios He has a thing for playing guitars from Sears & Roebuck. Yea... really... It is one of the little components that makes his stuff "authentic".
