Just lovely. Watching this with a baby Jackdaw snuggled into my lap. Just enjoyed its breakfast of meal worms, seeds and cold porridge! Sweep is a rescue from a chimney sweeps disturbance of the nest. Parents did not come back and was heartbreaking watching I it slowly going downhill. Only intervened when it was close to the end. Happy to report getting big and strong after lots and lots of TLC, who needs sleep anyway?! As I look down at it sleeping in my arms, full belly and content I know I did the right thing and it's going to be ok.
We had a lonely and domestic jackdaw around our forest and very few neighbours. He was very social and friendly and liked to hang around our yard and the neighbours. He suddenly died and the neighbours were happy of his death. It's very sad that some people don't appreciate the nature and see how wondrous it is.
There's a jackdaw comes to our house every morning and calls for his/her food and it even looks in the kitchen window. Sometimes when I get out of the car he/she calls to me. I'm not sure how the jackdaw knows me but they're a very clever bird and it's nice to strike up a relationship with a wild animal.
My neighbour is a chimney sweep and came home with four jax after he knocked them out of a chimney. Knowing they wouldn't survive he brought them home and handed them to me because he didn't know what to do with them.....well I now have four fully fledged youngsters that are hand tame and absolutely love human company. The Mrs and kids love them. BRILLIANT.
What a wonderful contribution this video is! On my daily walk to work I'd been noticing some birds because of their cry, which sounded to me like a squeaky toy. I made note of their appearance & call to find out what they were. Yours was one of the resources I used to identify the jackdaw. I've been living here for 17 years now & I'd never noticed them before. Thank you :)
ive been leaving out peanuts for the crows but mainly jackdaws are coming to get them. They are starting to understand what time i lay them out, today for the first time, one landed when i was in the garden, reading a book, it took a peanut and left, and came back.. I believe they are starting to recognize me, as a few jackdaws in a nearby park have been flying vero close to me. I hope one day, they are brave enough to greet me this close, on my arm.
There have been a fair few reputable studies that suggest that corvids (the bird family that includes crows, magpies and jackdaws, amongst others) recognise faces - so they most likely do recognise you. I've experienced similar behaviour to what you have described from crows, magpies and jackdaws - and the only explanation that makes sense is that they recognised us. We've even tried testing a little ourselves - and they didn't recognise strangers, but did recognise us, regardless of what we were wearing or the time we saw them. Incredible creatures.
A wonderful bird We have few in Berlin but lots of Hooded crows .I have built up friendships with hem and they come each day twice to my balcony to eat but doubt ever off my hand .How long before he did this ..He's so sociable :) * big like
i love jackdaws... since childhood... when there was a tame one in our village in n.ireland... called jacko... used to come to our house... i had tame one baby.. in 2007 but i chased him after a few months... he wouldnt go out of the bathroom.. even though i kept the window open... i had hoped he would come back.. but never did... he was quite adult by that time..i got them in the chimney here.... love them.. i am so disturbed by the shooting videos on here... ban them!
A young jackdaw has been visiting me the last couple of days and he is completely unafraid of me. Today I handfed him and just sat and talked to him for a while, it seemed he didn't want to leave. I am not really sure what to do about it. I hope he wont rely on me for food (though I think other people in my building is feeding him as well) so I am not feeding him too much, but is really nice to have him coming back.
I have a whole chatter of hungry jackdaws 🥰❤️ they're very wary of me though, even though I've been feeding them for 18 months, any advice on how to get them to trust me?
@@MrRobinlongCorvids r some of my favourite animals, I’m currently writing an essay that debates if animals can have their own morals and in my opinion, Jackdaws, Crows and Ravens absolutely do! Magnificent beauties
Such smart birds, love em so much! Didnt think we had them up in sheffield and a quick google search gave me some horrifying results.. how people can be so cruel to such heartwarming animals is a beyond me.
In consecutive years I raised two jackdaw chicks that had fallen from a high nest. They were Jacko and Jacko-two. How original is that? The first ended up semi-tame and once fully fledged stayed locally for about 6 months, coming to me when called .The second was kept wild (not easy when hand feeding a tiny nestling) and stayed around for two weeks after fledging. I suspect Jacko-two had a greater chance of long-term survival.
Yeah, they do that. There was a fledging I saved from a cat and kept him less than a week until he could fly properly (he was pretty big already) and if you handled him he would never poop on you
We have grackles and other blackbirds such as Rusty Blackbirds and Brewer's Blackbird. Think of them as the less intelligent Jackdaw (although the birds I alluded to first are icterids and not corvids).
Hi Robin, I recently rescued a jackdaw he was stuck in an attic. Did you rescue the one here? How would one go about setting him free when the time is right?
Thanks for the response. There's a 2 family's nesting in some chimney pots where I live. I heard its better to release at the end of the breeding season. Would it be better to release him where his family might be?
@MrRobinlong Well I hadn't really know much about them until the other day, I had one on my car and when it saw me it landed right next to me, I called the wife out to have a look and he jumped onto her arm whilst she stroked it. I never knew they were so sociable. I'm looking forward to seeing more and hopefully I'll have some food to give it too.
Hi Robin love your videos my friend , did the vet do anything? with jacko's leg, its such a shame it pains me , is he in any discomfort ? l cant help thinking that it may give him problems in time l really hope not . ??? best regards .steve.
Notice how he eats the nuts over the worms. Nuts have insane amounts of fats+proteins, yea I did not know either - apparently highest ratio per weight value!
Depends on the type of worms u feed the bird generally nurs do have more but super worms have more i think i was reading it somewhere maybe wrong feel free to correct me.
they are horrible things, they block your chimney up ,if you haven,t got a bird gaurd on,i have now,but before i did,i came home one day, there was one in my inside my bedroom, window, it got its neck pulled.
