This is our first time watching reaction to the movie "Police Story (1985)" Police Story is a Hong Kong action crime comedy film series created by and starring Jackie Chan. It comprises seven films, variously directed by Jackie Chan, Stanley Tong, Benny Chan, and Ding Sheng, and produced by Raymond Chow, Leonard Ho, Jackie Chan, Barbie Tung, Willie Chan, Solon So and Yang Du.

There IS a sequel, several in fact but really only the next one (Police Story 2) is as good as the first one, you'd also like Project A and Dragons Forever which is probably the best movie uniting the brothers Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao.

I am so glad I grew up in Mexico. TVAzteca in my town would show action and martial arts movies on Saturday nights. I got to watched all of Jackie's 80s movies.

Chan jumps off a balcony and grabs onto a pole, then slides down it while the lights around him break. The pole was actually made of metal, and it was covered in light bulbs that were filled with gas. When the bulbs broke, they released the gas, which ignited and caused the pole to become very hot. The friction of Chan's hands against the pole also caused them to burn. In addition to the burns on his hands, Chan also fractured a finger and sustained cuts and bruises from the impact of the fall. However, the most serious injury he suffered was a dislocated pelvis. This occurred when he landed at the bottom of the pole and his body weight caused his pelvis to shift out of place. Chan was in a lot of pain, but he was able to finish filming the movie. The next day, Chan went to the hospital for treatment. He had to have his pelvis put back in place, and he also received treatment for his burns and other injuries. Chan was in the hospital for a few days, but he made a full recovery. I think I remember reading two of three of the dudes thrown out of the bus windows suffered spinal injuries. The whole crew put their lives on the line for this one.

@@Hype679 I'm sure I read that wasn't exactly how that scene was supposed to end. The bus stopped short & that's how the two guys got injured. I think they were supposed to both land on the car.

@@Hype679 Yes its true....they did get hurt.....they were suppose to land on the car but the bus had air brakes so stopping the bus couldn't be done quickly to throw them out the bus windows. Instead of them landing on the car......they landed on the road.

Hong Kong back then was still a British colony, so that's why they're wearing the wigs in the court, because it follows the British legal system. We do the same thing here in Australia.

The police dept. was also modeled after the British system and required higher police management to undergo schooling at British institutions. Although high ranking police officers back then were usually British Caucasians, there were Chinese graduates from British Ivy League schools who were eligible for police commissions in the British colony, hence the younger aged officers assigned over older native chinese veterans because they graduated from the British Police Academy.

I am happy you guys watched the original language/English sub version of the movie. For some odd reason a lot of Jackie Chan's Hong Kong movies are heavily edited in the English dub version with stuff cut from dub version. It's always best to watch the movies in the original language

Jackie Chan has injured himself so many times in his movie stunts that his old website (sadly not available anymore) had a picture of his skeleton and if you clicked on any bone, it would show a clip of him breaking that bone live on film. I spent hours on that site.

He started lying a lot at one point because the whole I do all of my stunts and fight scene never happened but he got famous outside of China because he was promoted that way overseas. From what I understand everyone knew in China that he never did all of the fight scenes and stunts himself.

@@Arkira_X That is what he said but in China supposedly it was always known that he did not do a lot of stunts he said he did. Overseas only couple years that information came out. Jackie likes to lie. He has contradicted himself because of it. For example there was a show from China that was put on youtube and he talked about when he was younger he used to do like three scenes in a day and went home to sleep. Rest was left to stuntmen. The hardworking Jackie showed up years later.(he was talking to people who were upcoming actors in China). The version we know is not real. That is just how he promotes himself overseas.

The reason they show that stunt at the end 3 times is cos of how dangerous and impressive it was, it was live electricty running through that. He had 3rd degree burns on his hands to a point where his skin was sticking to the pole and then he cracked 2 vertibrates in his spine during the final fall of that stunt... Also the movie is jokingly referred to as "Glass story" from cast and crew due to all the glass stunts in the end climax.

Jackie is pretty famous for the blooper/behind the scenes reels during the credits, he learned it from the director of the movie Cannonball Run which Jackie had a part in. After that it became a staple in his movies.

@@jason42080 A lot of it was fake. He went through a lot of trouble to make it seem that he did things that he never did to keep up the image that he did all his stunts(which later he changed to most stunts) and fight scenes.

That's not how the court system was in China, but it was in Hong Kong (which was still controlled by the British at the time this was made). Their court system was modeled after the British system. Many British barristers still wear the wigs now.

For all the glass comments there’s a reason why this movie is nicknamed as “Glass Story” due to the amount of stunts involving glass items. Jackie Chan’s movies in the 80s-90s were known to be absolutely brutal when it comes to it’s almost fatal stunts. The man has injured or broken almost every part of his body. Whether it’s burning his hands or having his shoulder severely dislocated,this man and his stunt team goes all in all out with their stunts.

There are so many amazing, incredible Jackie Chan movies he made in the 80's and 90's. Operation Condor/Armour of God, for one, that had one of the most painful stuntman wipe outs I had ever seen. What I like about the Police Story/Supercop series is that it begun Maggie Cheung's career (...girlfriend May) who went on to become a prominent female Hong Kong action star herself. The crazy dynamic of misunderstanding between Jackie and May became a template for subsequent Police Story movies and his relationship with the women in his movies generally speaking. Jackie absolutely pushed the envelope of stunts in movies but also being such an iconic hero of the Hong Kong cinema movement in America. I hope you watch more of this series, Supercop (...Police Story 3) is probably my favorite Jackie Chan movie of all time.

Rush Hour, for oldschool Jackie Chan fans, is the end of an era. While those movies would make a ton of money, and got Jackie and Chris Tucker their biggest paydays ever... his American movies were always a big step down from the 'classic' Hong Kong Chan movies from the late 70s and early 80s, and due to age and injury, Jackie's Hong Kong output wound down in the 2000s. "Who Am I" and "Gorgeous" are maybe the 2 best post-Rush Hour films

By the time this came out in 1985, Jackie had been in many films in Hong Kong, and had been a known star. 'Police Story' is considered by some to be one of the best action movies of all time. It would be ten more years before Jackie had his first major success in the North American market, 'Rumble in the Bronx'. Some other Jackie Chan movies you may want to check out include (in release order) 'Snake in the Eagle's Shadow' (1978), 'Drunken Master' (1978) ( If you watch them back to back they seem very similar, as they have the same director as well as some of the same actors in starring roles), 'Project A' (1983), 'Wheels on Meals' (1984), 'Armour of God' (1986), 'Armour of God II: Operation Condor' (1991), 'Drunken Master II' (1994) (This movie was released by Dimension Films in 2000 in a re-edited form as 'The Legend of Drunken Master ' ), 'Rumble in the Bronx' (1995), 'Mr. Nice Guy ' (1997), and 'Who Am I?' (1998).

Few first time viewers are prepared for how hardcore Jackie and his team went on the stunts and fights in this. That and the comedy. The mall scenes are truly unbelievable, and the fight between the main henchmen here are some of Jackie's best. Just another day on the job for him, and Police Story is another in the long line of film masterpieces from the Man

Oh yeah, definitely catch the rest of the series as you can. I grew up watching these and they're always fantastic. Be aware, in the primary Canto language audio, his character's name is Chan Ka-Kui, and he'll have the nickname "Kevin". But in some of the english dubbed versions of the different films, they change his character's name to his own name "Jackie Chan". But the first 4 films (+1 spinoff, Supercop 2) are the same characters in the same continuity. Afterwards, there was a New Police Story (2004) and Police Story 2013 (2013), which are both Jackie Chan but reboots where he plays different protagonist characters but who are also cops named "Chan".

New Police Story (2004) I thought was ok, the action scenes where great. I don't think the drama parts of it worked too well. Police Story 2013 (2013) or Police Story: Lockdown (2013) I didn't really like that much, not a good movie in my opinion. In the Police Story: Lockdown version of Police Story 2013 the character's name is Wen.

In Project A, there is also a big stunt by Jackie Chan at the end. They also show it three times. It's an artistic choice to create emphasis and not because they couldn't decide which camera angle was good. Whether anybody likes this approach or not, that's a different story. And, by the way, do react to Police Story 2 and The Drunken Master as well. Thank you.

That was one of Jackie's favorite/most dangerous stunts - he mentioned it in so many interviews, so that's probably why it was shown so many times. Lol. Pleasantly surprised to see Brigitte Lin here - I totally love her. Can't wait until the Police Story one with Michelle Yeoh :D

The stunt team nicknamed the movie Glass Story. All those stunts in the climax used specially made sugar glass that was twice as thick as normal, and all those cuts are real.

39:00 They filmed it from three different camera angles because they could only shoot it once. And thankfully it was a good thing they captured it all during one take. Someone mentioned in a previous comment what happened to Jackie Chan after he performed the stunt. The injuries he suffered were severe. It is still one of his famous stunts too. The footage definitely shows how committed he was to doing the jump.

To fans this film gets called 'Glass Story' because of the end sequence in the mall. The stunt when he slides down the pole had issues that aren't visible. The electrics hadn't been sorted so it was all live and electrocuted him as he slides down.

the craziest thing is that Jackie directed this film while spending the other half of his day filming a completely different movie! In fact, he went from the famous "pole slide" stunt (they replayed the stunt from 3 different angles I think so that no one could doubt Jackie did it himself or think he used camera tricks to make it seem more dangerous than it really was) where he sustained second-degree burns, to the set of the other movie without seeking medical attention. Insane work ethic. And they destroyed a real shantytown in the opening sequence. They compensated the residents with new places to live apparently.

Make sure you watch drunken master 2, the first one is a classic, but very cult, the 2nd one is just amazing. Drunken master 2 has almost nothing to do with the first one so you won’t be missing anything.

@@BigB0ss00 No, I'm not. The uncut Cantonese version with English subtitles is available on Blu-ray in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan. And it may be available to stream, too. I couldn't tell you where though because I don't stream anything. It's really not that rare any more.

That's Maggie Cheung (the girlfriend) from Hero (which also starred Jet Li, Donnie Yen, and Tony Leung). She's retired from acting. This is in the 80s when Jackie Chan's popularity was at his height spreading across Asia. Drunken Master is in the 70s in his earlier career, and he finally headed for Hollywood in the 90s. FYI, Michelle Yeoh showed up in Police Story 3

Just discovered 3 interesting facts about the movie: Fact #1 - All the glass in the entire fight scene in the mall is known as “sugar glass”. It’s basically just a see through brittle type of sugar that can be made to look like glass. It breaks away easily and is totally harmless so its used all the time in action movie stunts. They used it for this movie too, but it was decided here to make it extra thick for realism purposes. This means that this safe prop sugar basically became as hard as actual glass!! So whenever someone is being thrown through sheets of the stuff, (36:24/36:33/36:52/37:26/37:31/37:47) or when Jackie gets his head smashed against it, (36:27), they would feel the impact as if it were the real thing. The pain in their faces and the cuts and bruises they have are, by all accounts, totally legit! Fact #2: (38:42) Hands! Down! One of Jackie's biggest stunts to date. There was NO safety rope and NO safety net. Literally jumped onto that pole and slid down it. It took him a while to gain the courage to do that stunt. He gave a scream to psyche himself up before launching himself onto that pole. You don't hear it, but you see his mouth letting out a scream. Fact #3: When Jackie was sliding down the pole, he didn’t just burn the skin off his hands… no… he suffered electrocution, fractured his ribs, and dislocated his pelvis. **What’s even crazier is later that day hours after his initial on set recovery, he had another shoot to go to, decided he was fine and went anyways. When he got to the studio he found that he couldn't open the door. Next thing he knew, he suddenly couldn't move and collapsed to the floor. It was later discovered that he had a mild stroke. Yet, he gladly survived and was able to keep making this movie! To this day, it is hard for me to think that he is really human or if he just has that much willpower that nothing can stop him from making movies!! Jackie Chan isn’t just unstoppable, he is one of a kind!**

Jackie Chan is indeed insane. He's been banged up, beat up, cut up, broken so many bones and set on fire so much, yet still laughed the Grim Reaper in the face. Other stunt actors are impressive, but Jackie Chan is number one, bar none. He's been blacklisted so much from insurance companies and sent to the hospital so much, but still carries on shooting. In Hong Kong cinema, they put a heavy emphasis on the action scenes and not so much on safety in comparison to Western films. One scene that can last mere seconds could take days, weeks, maybe months to do. You two should watch Top 10 craziest Jackie Chan stunts that almost killed him and How to Do Action Comedy.

On the topic of J.Chan, did you know his worse injury in armour of god where his brain was bleeding out his ears he only survived by pure luck!! The ONLY surgeon that could of saved him HAPPENED to be in the same country at the time! It was a race against time and the surgeon worked his magic!

Jackie's first USA film was Battle Creek Brawl (1980), Cannonball Run (guest) 1981/1984 & The Protector (1985), Jackie went back home disillusioned with Hollyweird and did his magnum opus of Police Story which is the movie you are talking about right now

He got hurt real bad sliding down the pole in the mall, that is a main reason why they kept replaying that in different angles, kinda to make him feel better about attempting that stunt and making it worthwhile.

Glad that you guys enjoyed this classic! I remember watching it originally, and the ending wasn't that abrupt. There's a scene where Selina helps May back up, and they gather together outside by the police cars. Also, when the Captain says "I didn't see anything," that happens after Jackie kicks the villain on the cart, not before. Maybe the version you saw was edited.

I love the reaction! You guys are cool! But I hope you guys really understand how impressive the stunts and choreography is. There is no better hand to hand martial arts action than these HK movies. Jackie Chan is the goat of fighting scenes and stunts. But also his team is incredible. No fighting looks more impressive, no punch feels more real, no kick more powerful and no fight sequence more visceral.

22:15 This movie was shot back in the 80s, during that time HK was still a colony of the UK. Back then most high police commissioners were all british and the laws were all british courts.

38:42 Jackie Chan got injured severely while doing that stunt. 1. The Christmas lights wrapped around the pole heated the pole. So when Jackie slid down the scorched pole, he suffered second-degree burns to his hands. 2. When Jackie crashes and lands through the kiosk below, he broke his back and dislocated his pelvis.

Dragons Forever is my favourite Jackie Chan movie, which I watch at least once a year. It has a whole final showdown fight scene that goes and goes and GOES. It's incredible, and I thoroughly recommend it.

In terms of martial arts movies, Jackie Chan's signature style is a very chaotic, loose, wild swinging, always on the back foot. He's always trying to avoid fighting, and to escape. By contrast, you have someone like Jet Li, who is very precise, poised and very dangerous. The Drunken Master movies are great BTW. It's a rare style within the Shaolin umbrella. It's not very practical, or efficient, but it does give the advantage of being unpredictable.

Hi, y'all! TL;DR Audiences wanted to see the biggest and craziest stunts with each film. The performers and Jackie risked their lives for these biggest stunts. So it warranted seeing the riskiest stunts multiple times at different angles and speeds when you paid for a ticket to see it in the theater. And it was respectful to the performers. --- I used to be a lowly stuntperson, and I have friends from Jackie's stunt team: The reason you see the biggest stunts multiple times in the 80s and 90s in his films is because the idea of stuntwork was different back then than it is now. Nowadays, even in Asian cinema now, every stunt that's done, is about being as safe as possible. Tom Cruise will not tolerate an unsafe environment on his sets and they perform stunts as safe as possible. Back then, there was only cardboard boxes and mattresses to help you, and nothing else - and it was about outdoing your stunts to be bigger and better than the last one. Seeing the painstaking lengths the stunt team and Jackie would go through were the thrills audiences sought - so you wanted to see the unbelievable grand stunt multiple times, because you were watching it for that, and less the story. Arguably, story was used as just a skeletal frame to house the stunts he dreamt of doing (many inspired by Buster Keaton and the silent film stars), while stunts in America and modern cinema are usually there to serve the story. Anyhow, that particular stunt with him sliding down the pole, he burned all the skin off of his hands when he performed that. He broke so many of his bones through his films, and cracked his skull open in Armour of God 1, and so seeing the biggest stunts these stunt performers risked their lives for was worth playing over multiple times. Growing up on the films in the early 80s to the late 90s, my family and friends would get the bootlegs in Chinatown and from family in Asia and it was exhilarating to see what crazy stunts they would perform to try and outdo their last ones.

Hongkong was still a British colony until 1997 when it returned to China. This movie was in 1984/5. Thus the judges and lawyers follow the British judiciary system.

Actually, the year this movie was released, the 2nd movie made in America was released too. Not counting appearing in the CannonBall Run movies. He just became famous in America during the 90's.

If I remember right, Jackie Chan suffered some 3rd degree burns when sliding down the pole through the lights, and all of his stunts were done without safety cables to help him out.
