I'm quite convinced that even if whole civilisation is wiped out in some sort of a catastrophe, thousands of years from now, people will be telling myths about the great warrior Jackie Chan. The man is more than an icon. He has shown not thousands, not millions, but billions of people that human body is capable of things almost none of them ever imagined. He will be remembered and loved.

Jackie Chan has arguebly the biggest name recognition in America as an Asian action star. He always struck me as a more light hearted and kid-friendly actor. But I guess he suffered from the same type casting that Jim Carrey suffers from where he is torn between his past comedy success and a desire to be taken more seriously to mixed success.

I don't know. He has the talent, and was able to pull it off in The Foreigner. It's just that going full China ended up playing against him. It's nice thaf he wants to make movies in his homeland, but tell me, when was the last time a Chinese movie reached the global stage? More than 15 years if I remember correctly. It's also the fact that he doesn't seem to have much chemistry with the actors he shares screen with. The Foreigner worked because he was alone most of the movie.

@@sirbruno95 that's a really good point, I remember a time when Chinese films were winning Academy Awards, nowadays they hardly even get a release outside of China, I wonder if it's due to the tension between East and West right now...but it sucks because there have been some really good films coming out of China....but I'll be honest.....there's more crappy films than good ones, especially in the martial arts genre....the most recent one I saw was The Rusty Blade which came out earlier this year, it's your typical Wuxia film, but more grounded in reality...other than that it's been difficult to find a good martial arts action film without CCP propaganda and Nationalism just shoehorned in where it doesn't make any sense....a good example was Philip Ng's Once Upon a Time in Shanghai, which was meant to be a remake of the Boxer from Shantung, in the original Ma ZhongShan fights the axe gang, in the remake it starts off with the axe gang, but suddenly halfway through the movie, out of nowhere the real villains are revealed to be the Japanese, with absolutely no explanation for how or why.

So basically: Jackie is getting older and struggles with doing action movies the way he used to. He spent more time directing and experimenting with different roles, hence the harsh reviews from critics. Conclusion, his career is no longer at the top, but his direction is refreshing. You may very well say he transforms himself into a different kind of actor, perhaps even better than his typical Jackie Chan action archetype.

Railroad Tigers is actually good. As a comedy it's not that very funny, but it's not bad and the comedy format makes the characters likeable, real people who find humour in everyday situations and fail a lot like everyone does. The final fight sequence, whilst it has a running gag, and a few jokes, is legitimately dramatic. You don't get frustrated by failings, but instead it gets really very sad when Tigers keep dying one after another, and the situation becomes completely hopeless. The movie can actually make the viewer believe they are all going to die for nothing, and it's something action movies usually fail to achieve when they try.

I have to watch it then, becaue thats what good anti war movies do, humanize soldiers an make it feel pointless, yet tragic. @@marocat4749 Oh yes, give it a try. @@marocat4749 If you like vintage/alternative movies on this theme, I'd also reccomend 'They Fought For Their Country' by Mosfilm. It's officially available on RU-vid for free. It's a rare example of Soviet war movie admitting the Red Army was in terrible condition and soldiers wouldn't have transport or shoes or even food. There are problems that piss off some enthusiasts like tanks always going on fire at the rear etc. but the artillery barrage scenes are absolutely horrific while very realistic, and what we see afterwards is that those who survived are broken for life. Deaf, scared, shaking without control even weeks or months later. And there's a horrible scene when a soldier is going to bayonet charge is hit by shards from artillery shell everywhere, and he wakes up many hours later stranded in the wasteland, covered in his own blood, not really knowing what he is doing there, and only able to move one hand. Then he's found with a lone paramedic but she's too weak to move him. And then there's a surgery scene when a soldier curses in agony of pain because they have no anaesthetics and they cut him and remove many bullets while he's still conscious, and his main concern is that they cut his boots and he would have to walk bare foot again.

The last movie I remember seeing with Jackie that I enjoyed was The Foreigner (with Pierce Brosnan). I thought it was a breath of fresh air for him cause despite him bringing his stuntwork and martial arts work into the mix, he also had to play a realistic kind of character. Like, a central piece of the beginning and end is the deaths of the young men who fought beside Jackie to overthrow the regime; it’s made out to be really tragic and heroic, “We will remember their names forever,” bla bla bla… But we didn’t know them. We were meant to feel sorry for some young men we’d seen for a couple minutes, not because the movie made us feel empathetic, but because it told us it needed to be. Plus, Jackie Chan isn’t nearly in it as much as the promotional material would suggest. It’s a bland movie, and an obvious propaganda flick. No wonder it has a 5% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes

I do wonder if the more global approach mainland Chinese cinema takes is the reason for Chan's development as an actor. Back in the glory days, HK cinemagoers very much liked when actors played to type, so it was rare you got to see unique roles for established names. People love Dragons Forever today, but that movie did not do well at the HK box office specifically because the three leads played against type.

The first time I really thought to myself "damn...this guy can actually act" when watching Jackie was (hear me out) the Karate Kid remake. There is one scene in particular in that movie that really surprised me with his ability to deliver raw emotion. I must admit that before that I previously just thought of him as an action star that acts in movies rather than an actor who does action scenes if that makes sense. oh and I liked the foreigner and dragonblade out of all the movies hes done in the past ten years

To this day, one of my favorite Jackie Chan movies is Shinjuku Incident. A movie where there wasn't any sort of action sequences we'd come to expect from Jackie. At first it was a letdown, but half way through the movie I started to realize that he was as competent at acting as he was at throwing kicks and being funny. It was really refreshing at the time and completely changed how I view this actor.

Me and alot of people can't not see him as a CCP mouthpiece. Yes, it has nothing to do with his art, but it was everything to do with ticket sales. Classic Jackie is tied to the good memories of Hong Kong and how it used to be before China started strangling it to death. "Jackie Chan" is supposed to be fun and Cantonese. Jackie Chan being serious and acting in Mandarin just breaks the immersion and makes you think of his short comings and how crappy everything the CCP is making everything now.

I think let's not forget that Hong Kong, a place where he was once respected, now practically hates him due to his pro-CCP views. That and his personal troubles went full tabloids and affected his career. He kinda went the same career faltering as Tom Cruise, but unlike Chan, Cruise always tries to reinvent himself to mold into the kind of movie he and his audiences would want to see. That's practically why his latest Mission: Impossible movies, Edge of Tomorrow, American Made, and more recently, Top Gun: Maverick were instant blockbuster classics. Chan does not have that allure he once had. He practically peaked early with his crazy stunts and that's where his appeal was waning.

I mean, Jackie Chan's basically set for life at this point. He's already carved his legacy into cinema and it seems like he's just doing whatever he feels like regarding roles, which considering all he's accomplished he'd be more flexible with the roles he takes. Plus it's about time he's retired tbh

I will say, railroad tigers was genuinely a fun watch. I saw it a few weeks back, and it really does show what Jackie can do outside of just his regular shtick of only adding highly executed fight scenes into his movies. It's my h more laid back, and like so many have pointed out, it's because he's had such a long career filled with bangers after bangers, each almost re defining kung fu flicks, or actions flicks he's at an age where that's just not possible for him to physically keep up anymore. I think the issue is it's less about him not being good enough or capable enough for solid acting, it's more the fact reviewers and consumers all around still expect the classic Jackie Chan combat flair. I don't think his careers gone down hill as much as people say, just that it's not quite in the same path it once took as many other 80s and 90s action stars.

I'm not sure if part 2 is going to get into his very pro CCP stance. This does not make him a popular celebrity especially in Hong Kong where he was born. Maybe his international audience doesn't care about his political views but could have consequences in the Asian film market. It could all be Jackie knows where his bread is buttered and he plays along so that he can still get his movies made and not get censored by the CCP.

Out of the films you discuss in this video, the only one I’ve seen is Railroad Tigers. I enjoyed it, but found it hard to follow at times. I think Jackie’s movies have always been inconsistent, from the very beginning. For example, Fearless Hyena is a much worse movie than Snake in Eagle’s Shadow. City Hunter wasn’t very good, nor was Mr Nice Guy. But they all had good action scenes to redeem them. Now that Jackie’s older, it’s natural that he has to rely on acting more than action, but I believe he’s capable of the transition if given a quality script and director. I think it would be wonderful to see him in non-action roles, but he could also update earlier stories - at this point in his career, he’d make a great Wong Kei Ying!

Jackie can't move to the next step until he removes himself from the action. No matter what movie he does, he feels like it still needs some action because that where he excels at and can be used as a scape goat. "That movie wasn't great but Jackie still got it with the action scene". If he allows himself to play a role without action, he can remove himself of the action stigma and let people judge him entirely on performance.

Nahhh totally disagree with you on Shinjuku Incident, that is one of his best works ever. The sudden plot twist of him not knowing how to fight at the start really sets the tone of the movie that its a non-action heavy drama movie, which is a good new take for me

Jackie has been trying to do more acting & less fighting/stunts since the late '90s. There was a Chinese interview at that time where Jackie talked about wanting to play more dramatic roles because he knew that "action star, life very short." Unfortunately for him, film studios only offered him action-comedy roles, especially from Hollywood. Not until he's senior enough in the late 2000s, he got more dramatic role from Chinese movies. Even then, scripts from Hollywood that he got was always "Police from Hongkong, Police from China, CIA from Hongkong, CIA from China." Only 1 dramatic role, which was as Mr. Han in The Karate Kid remake. So many scripts came to him were action-comedy scripts. Not until he got the script of The Foreigner, he returned to Hollywood because his role in The Foreigner was so dramatic & different than other roles he got.

The main issue isn't Jackie's physical age as much as his mental. He used to make fun movies that appealed primarily to teens and young adults. Now he's either making something dark, brooding and almost depressing and when he's trying to make something funny, he makes it flat-out childish. And just like Stallone, he's less interested in giving people what they want and more about jump-starting the careers of younger actors. If Jackie's getting too old for kung-fu, maybe he should use more guns. Perhaps a Chinese copy of Lethal Weapon starring him and Chow-Yun Fat. Have John Woo direct it. I'd watch that!

Jackie Chan has in a way been type cast as THE ASIAN ACTION COMEDY HERO. So with his age affecting his ability to do the stunts he is known for, he's able to explore other roles that in the past he would've been overlooked for. It's unfortunate that it took aging for him to gain a better chance at proving his acting skills in more diverse rolls.
