While Jackie Chan was doing the talk show circuit in America, promoting Rumble in the Bronx, the JC Stunt Team was back in Hong Kong filming fight scenes for Thunderbolt...withOUT Jackie!
Thunderbolt was the next movie Jackie Chan filmed and released after Rumble in the Bronx - both came out in 1995.
If you wanna help me stay awake to make more videos, consider getting me a coffee! (^_^)
ko-fi.com/figh...
If you were a Jackie chan fan in 1995 this line gave you chills: "the action hero who does all his own stunts." It was everything. it inspired you. it's what drew you to Jackie's movies and helped you to fall in love with fight scenes. anytime i bring up Jackie Chan using stunt doubles I'm met with these caveats of people saying, "well that was done in this year and in this other year he gave an interview saying he might start to use them and blah blah blah," so we're gonna go back to 1995, because Rumble in the Bronx isn't the only movie he did that year. Right after Rumble in the Bronx Jackie Chan did Thunderbolt, which you might not have seen because it didn't have a theatrical release in the West. By the end of this video you might not want to see it as a Jackie Chan film, you might want to see it more as a group effort.
If you remember, towards the end of Rumble in the Bronx Jackie Chan broke his ankle doing this jump onto the hovercraft and was wearing a cast for the remainder of the filming. But keep in mind he was able to film the rest of Rumble in the Bronx; they were able to work around it. In Thunderbolt he doesn't just use a stuntman now and then, he uses a stuntman the majority of the time. The fight scenes are more stunt double than Jackie Chan.
Thunderbolt's use of insert shots remind me of 90's movies doing the old Texas switch. You know, having a stunt double doing all sorts of flips and fancy movements then cutting to a medium shot of the star actor jumping up and landing so it looked like they were doing all of the flips?
That's what Jackie Chan is doing in the fight scenes in Thunderbolt. I understand his broken ankle had just healed so maybe he's not going to do stuff like jump off of a ledge or a really hard sidekick but there's no excuse when it comes to shots like this. Why did that have to be a double? The only reason that would happen is if they filmed the entire fight without Jackie and went back and did shots with him afterwards. They would see this shot and assume nobody would notice anyway so there's no need to refilm it. Same with this shot. He doesn't do anything with his feet. He could be standing in place on one foot and do this shot but it's a double. This is a fight scene with a couple of guest appearances by Jackie.
And look he does some cool stuff like this so it's not like he's completely immobilized from the ankle injury he's sustained in Rumble on the Bronx but look what color are his boots here black and now he does this and we get the close-up and the boots are brown there's no reason for the costume department to change his boots halfway through the day it's obvious that this shot of the boot isn't even Jackie wearing it basically if you can't clearly see Jackie's face it's not him in this fight it's not even just every time you can't see Jackie's face sometimes you do see the actor's face and it's just not Jackie they didn't put the effort in to even make sure that you never see the devil's face they just hope that you don't notice look at how much this is like a 90s texas switch though they have all of this action and it's not Jackie and then he backs up and there's a close-up of his face and then it goes back to action and it's not him and then another close-up of his face and it's Jackie and then again as soon as they go to the action it's no longer Jackie and i know that there's an outtake of Jackie trying this little stunt and not getting it i'm convinced the one they put in is the one of the double doing it right and that Jackie tried it didn't get it and they just went with the one they already had filmed
The garage fight is actually amazing. It's one of my favorite fight scenes, but it's not one of my favorite Jackie Chan fight scenes.
Shoutout to the late, great Aillen Sit who is a primary stuntman in both Thunderbolt AND Rumble in the Bronx.
If you're like me and you became a huge Jackie chan fan in 1995 when rumble in the bronx came out and you loved hearing this line the action hero who does all his own stunts i'm sorry but if you're like me then you also love seeing just how much of a team effort it is to film fight scenes like this

I have a problem for martial arts stars who use stunt double even for some simple punches and kicks, I'm not talking about some hardcore gymnastics stuffs or difficult high kicking stuffs that they can't perform beautifully (For example: Bruce Lee thought he couldn't perform flips beautifully in Enter the Dragon (1973) so he decided to use Yuen Wah as his stunt double). Yuen Wah is a legendary martial arts actor in his own right by the way. I'm talking about just simple punch to the face or kick to the body. I notice that they will always use camera angles to hide the stunt double's face. I understand that Jackie Chan probably does 98% of his most dangerous stunts, but I never understand why him or some martial arts stars like Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, and so many more celebrities or martial arts stars would need stunt double to take some simple light punches and kicks. My guess is they probably think their "body" is not well paid enough to do certain takes or take certain hits, and probably gonna demand higher salary if the director or action choreographer wanted them to stand in to take hits. As far as I know every stunt has a price to meet for the celebrity's body price, and if those celebrities think the studio doesn't pay enough money for that particular stunt, they won't do it. This is unfortunately how deceptive the action genre in the movie industry. When we were young we thought every punches and kicks received by the celebrities are themselves but then when we grew up realize maybe like 50% of the time they're not, it's almost always the stunt double acts like a punching bag and get tossed around for those highly paid martial arts stars.

@@michaelg4158 i think sometimes maybe it has to do with the retakes, maybe a star would finish a movie and go on the next one, and the previous one needs retakes, maybe that's one reason

The question of whether Jackie "needs" a stunt double is different from "must" using a double due to injury or the fact many of these films are shot on top of each other. Jackie directed and did some world class stunts in Police Story II, but at the SAME TIME, he's also shooting My Lucky Stars with Sammo Hung, who doesn't have the same budget and can't spend as long on the fight scenes as a Jackie production. Yes, unfortunately, Jackie did use doubles but it wasn't because he couldn't do those one-off stunts. It's because a serious injury could sideline the production, especially in the cases of American productions where he doesn't have control over long shooting schedules. Stanley Tong, an expert stuntman and Michelle Yeoh's stunt double early on, actually did the jump between the buildings in Rumble in the Bronx - and he was the director. Jackie has done many, many difficult and dangerous stunts, and was supposed to "hang it up" in the 90s, but still keeps doing things. Aside from a few cases where an expert in a particular stunt was needed, i.e. skateboard, there were other factors as to why Jackie needed a double here and there. The last spin kick in Dragons Forever is one case where Jackie's attempt at doing it didn't suit Sammo's liking and Chin Kar Lok was brought in to do it. It happens...but think of all the choreography, time, spills, fighting, dangerous jumps/falls, etc. that Jackie has done. Thunderbolt, another Sammo action-directed movie was reportedly rushed, and from what I remember, it was the sped-up race sequences that hurt the film moreso than instances where Jackie needed a double to compete the fight scenes in time -- again, not a Jackie production.

@@clydegentry9964 This is very detailed and very informative. Like you said Jackie can obviously do these things but for various reasons he used a double. I've seen interviews where he literally says what you are saying. "I sometimes have to use double" or expert for certain things. He can do it all but especially in the 90's he can't do everything because he would be injured and they would have to halt filming. This is something you can not afford to do when making a film. Also I love that you point out it's not a Jackie Chan production. So not his call.

My guess is that with the film having such a massive Mitsubishi sponsorship behind it, they probably had a deadline to get it out to theatres in Hong Kong that they couldn't break without legal consequences, and Jackie just couldn't do all those stunts so soon after he continued working through a bad injury that never got time to properly heal yet. I think it's likely that either Jackie himself or New Line Cinema decided it would be best to shelve the movie indefinitely in most countries - A movie where he's so obviously not doing anywhere near most of the stunts would likely damage his credibility. Audiences across Asia were obviously familiar with Jackie doing almost all of the most dangerous stunts - especially with the Armour of God incident, so one film out of many wouldn't cause everyone to suddenly think he's a total fraud. On the other hand, releasing Thunderbolt in the USA *right* after Rumble in the Bronx had been his breakout hit based on the marketing of how he does his own stunts would have probably been horribly damaging to his future popularity/box office in America. I think that's probably a very likely reason why they waited until 2006 to release Thunderbolt direct to DVD in North America, well after his peak popularity there.
@FightSceneFilmSchool
@FightSceneFilmSchool 2 года назад
That is an excellent assessment of the situation and gives a really logical reason for Thunderbolt having such a weird release! I think Mitsubishi would have been okay with working something out if the release was delayed in Hong Kong though, because Jackie has been driving pretty much exclusively Mitsubishi vehicles in his films since at least the first Armor of God flick (1986). They've got a good relationship and would know that they'd have a deal for the next movie, and the next, etc. Even though Thunderbolt was the most prominent deal so far, I can't see them being unwilling to work something out (although this is all just speculation). 🙂

Kind of feels like you're pointing out the obvious here, Jackie used doubles at least occasionally throughout his career, all the way back to Snake In The Eagles Shadow & Drunken Master (the original) way back in 1978. By the time he got to Rumble In The Bronx & Thunderbolt in the mid 90s Jackie was past his youthful prime, he'd been doing stunts & fight scenes for over 20 years, of course he wasn't doing all his own action at that point. By the way, he certainly didn't do all his own stunts in Rumble In The Bronx, either, Stanley Tong did the crazy jump from rooftop to balcony, a barefoot water skiing expert did the more difficult skiing shots, but throughout his career, especially from, say, 1978 to 1992, Jackie did enough of his own amazing action to earn his legendary status. I was a little disappointed when New Line's publicists lied/exaggerated how much of his own stuntwork Jackie did, but, hey, Chuck Norris was never a legitimate World Karate Champion, either, Hollywood publicists are always going to stretch the truth.
@FightSceneFilmSchool
@FightSceneFilmSchool 2 года назад
From 1995-2000 and beyond, Jackie went on every major morning and evening talk show in the West whenever one of his movies had a North American theatrical release. Every one if those hosts, every time he was on, asked if it was true that he did all of his own stunts. Jackie said it was all him every time. I understand your point about a New Line Cinema publicist stretching the truth, but I'd argue that Jackie saying "Yes," on hundreds of talk show appearances for years makes it no longer some production company's publicist's fault; it was very much Jackie cultivating that image of himself in the west. As further evidence check out the documentary My Stunts. It claims others are doubled in the final fight in Who Am I, but intentionally doesn't mention Jackie being doubled in the same fight. The documentary was directed and produced by Jackie, which means it was 100% his choice to make it look like he was doing it all himself and the other fighter wasn't good enough to do it himself. I made a video about how the documentary lies about Jackie and throws the other actor under the bus, all of which was Jackie's decision, because he was the director and producer. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xvH55Pk4MnA.html

Since he had an injury its pretty understandble in this one. But he has used stunt doubles in other movies but most of the time he also did the stunt aswell like the roof jump in rumble in the bronx the wide shot is of the director but Jackie also made that jump and in the close ups its him. Also in dragons forever he used one in the end against benny the jet because he couldnt make the spin kick look good apperently but he still did it. Also in who am i when he slides down the glass he did that but some shots are of stunt doubles who also did it so that it would look as good as it can. So Jackie does most of his stunt(except this movie ofc) (and especially when he was younger) but that dosent mean that he was the only one and the only one who was scene on the screen.

This isn't news. The man has over 150 films. He's been injured so many times, his career would be dead in the water if he stopped shooting each time. More interesting than Jackie Chan using doubles is a channel calling itself "Fight Scene Film School" discovering it in some obscure movie. Jackie Chan has openly talked about it in interviews. You could use clips from those as "confessions". lol. FANS KNOW. Doing all his own stunts is really about the more dangerous ones, not every move in a fight scene. He's also had double roles, running scenes with his foot in a cast from an accident... doubles. He shoots through all sorts of injuries. Who the heck knows why he used one here? But we know other instances when he did. Who cares? More importantly, I can't imagine a fan who'd want the real Jackie Chan and not a double if he, with his insane willingness to take risks decided on a double. Using a double when necessary is vastly different from using one to avoid risk. There are enough injuries with the camera still rolling to prove that he designs and performs his most dangerous stunts himself, or as he said in an interview, they aren't done. Cool that you spotted the doubles, but absurd that you're using it as evidence that his claim of doing his own stunts is untrue. BTW, the costume department doesn't have to change shoes in the middle of the day - the fight scenes can be shot over weeks or months. Continuity errors are very common in films. You should've known both these things given the name of the channel.

my theory is that by 1985 at least the stunt double usage increased as he got older. ( i know in police story 1 1983 they already showed that jackie used a double when doing the fall from the clock tower) let's get real here the fight scenes and the sequences were getting more complicated and there's just some things jackie can't do. he's been in the business since a child actor and a stuntman since 1971... 1971. just to give you some context by 1984 jackie was 30 years old already. i would say the injury he got in police story 1 1985 messed him up to ever fully recover. mars (cheung wing fat long time jackie chan stuntman) said when you injure your back or tail bone you basiclaly lose like half you kung fu. and in police story 1 he fell from a second story window and landed directly on his back. That miscue earned him a couple of broken vertebrae.

If you watch this one you’ll see that there are shots where all he had to do was take a single step (no fighting or intense physical activity at all) and it's still a double. There's conclusive evidence in this video that it isn't an "only when absolutely necessary" situation. I understand that you might be a huge Jackie Chan fan (I certainly am), but it's better to pay close attention to the evidence presented in a video (on anyone's channel) before commenting.🤷

Thought given the circumstance, I'm glad other stunt performers got work, but hopefully they do get credit for the movie. I find it funny that the one where you see the stunt double's face, it's just yuen biao XD

@@Loneliw0lf I'm pretty sure it's someone else - just a member of the JC Stunt Team (and the only credit he would get is for stunts, not "double for Jackie Chan," which would be a more prestigious credit).

Haha It bummed me out at first too, but now I think it would do a lot of good if he just switched the narrative of it being all him, and started leaning hard into the angle of "I'm just the face of the team, but we're all interchangeable and will step aside if someone on the team is better at something."

@@FightSceneFilmSchool yea I definitely agree. Just a slight change in narrative and it lifts up other people as well

You didn't get Texas Switch right. Texas Switch is switching out an actor and a stuntman (or double or whatever) in one continuous shot. Doing it in cuts is just regular old stunting. I like the style of Thunderbolt. Love how crazy it is and the shooting style, Sammo's a madman.
