From the early 50s through the late 60s, Jackie recorded a series of well-received albums of easy-listening music for Capitol Records.

I got to meet Jackie Gleason when I was a child when he lived in south Florida. My father was a professional musician and was playing in a fancy high-end club in Palm Beach in a group of strolling violins. I got to tag along with my mother sometimes to go watch my father play in various gigs over the years. This night in particular, Jackie Gleason came to party in the club - he came in with an entourage of about 20 other people. The Maitre'D came to the table where my mother and I were sitting with a paper and pen and asked me if I wanted to get Jackie's autograph, so I said "okay." I was probably about eight or ten years old and the only kid in the club ... I was a tiny little girl wearing my dotted-swiss easter dress. I walked up to Jackie and said, "Mr. Gleason?" a few times but he didn't hear me so I finally tugged on his pants leg (!) and got his attention. He looked down and saw me and said, "Why, it's a little girl!" He picked me up and sat me on his lap and I told him how much I liked his TV show. He bought me a Shirley Temple kid's soda cocktail and was so sweet and nice to me. He asked me what I was doing in a night club and I told him my father was one of the strolling violins as I pointed at my father. Jackie gave each one of them a big tip and gave me his autograph. I'm in my 70's now but I remember that experience like it was yesterday - Jackie was very, very nice to me and I'll never forget him!

It is so hard to find ANY footage of Gleason's American Scene program from the mid-to-late '60s. We watched it religiously every Saturday night, and I cannot find ANY of it on RU-vid. I want to see Crazy Guggenheim, The Poor Soul, the June Taylor Dancers. . ., and AWAAAAAAAY we GO!!!

Yes. American Scene Magazine was one of the greatest comedy shows of all time.

I just rewatched his "apology" for that awful game show he did back in '61. He was a completely different guy when he was being serious, and I could listen to Gleason talk for hours.

My mother worked at the country club where she would serve his breakfast. They'd talk of Brooklyn where they were both born. He had a house on the first tee and played golf every day.

Cammercials @ 27:18 46:19 1:04:20 1:20:48 1:36:28 1:54:27 Not to take away from a legend. But this T.V. Special does include commercials of the day. They always invoke a emotional response to our past.

If John Candy were still alive he would’ve been great doing a biopic of Jackie Gleason just like how before Chris Farley died he was planning on doing a biopic about the silent era actor Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle

The scene where Jackie is auditioning before Julie Andrews' character for a bit part is, Lee Strasberg was correct, unforgettable, phenomenal. Play it a few times and see if you agree.
