One of the best interviews of a Jazz musician I've seen to date.

This is the hippest documentary on jazz that I have ever seen. Back around 1978 I was a delivery driver in Los Angeles and Jackie was playing at Shelley’s Man Hole in Hollywood and I could not afford to pay to get in so I stood outside and put my ear to the door and looked in the widow and listened to Jackie. He was in his 50’s at that time and he sounded great and I wanted to wait outside when he would leave the club but I was tired and I I had a long drive home so I split but Jackie will always be one of my favorite jazz musicians

What makes gil noble such a great jazz interviewer, he's a jazz fan that is knowledgeable and respectful to the music, and those who played it. Jackie McLean was a true giant.

Growing up in NYC, Eyewitness News was a mainstay in our home, my dad LOVED “Like It Is” and had so much respect for Gil Noble as a journalist and media pioneer. Rest In Heaven, Mr. Noble🙏🏻

My grandma loved watching Like it Is on sunday afternoons. Gil Noble was a huge representation of the African American community. Channel 7 was a big part of our home thanks to Like it Is, Eyewitness News, Oprah, Jeopardy, and Wheel of Fortune. R.I.P Mr. Noble. A true Harlem icon and TV legend. Harlem all day!

Just wonderful. Coming from a Jazz Musician who feels the need to give back and KEEP THE FLAME BURNING - for the future generations - this was such a genuine discussion. So many intangibles, nothing staged. Jackie mentions the importance of Music History in the overall Jazz education. Coming up, I was fortunate to take a full-year class "Concepts of Music" which really dove into the origins of Jazz (Rhythm, Cultures, etc). Thanks again!

Absolutely essential viewing for anyone interested in jazz improvisation. Jackie McLean is a legend of this music, still relevant today. I agree with him that "jazz" is a terrible name for this music.

So Charlie Parker and other modern music artist back then were basically 'sampling' music and producing it like hip hop producers in the 80's til today.
@brucescott4261
@brucescott4261 3 года назад
James Earl Cash ...They were not sampling.
@jamesearlcash1758
@jamesearlcash1758 3 года назад
@@brucescott4261 No not technically for obvious reason but nonetheless they were replaying other peoples stuff just playing it in a way that it wasn't easily recognizable just like today with sampling. The only difference is Bird played what he was 'sampling' from those classical music pieces whereas back in the days of hip hop producers were both replaying and sampling records of previously popular music. So whether you replay a music piece or run it through a sampler the concept is the same, both are using other people's music to create theirs.

Be Bop and Hip Hop are cousins. When Dizzy Gillespie usurped Harry Sweets Edison at Minton's Playhouse, years later, and just down the street, at Harlem World, Bizzy Bee was too busy to respond to the lyrical expression of Kool Mo Dee

Again a story about how much drogs can spoil a mans life or at least take many years out of his life. Parker said the same to young musicians and now Jackie Maclean warns them.
