Blackwell went out of business in the late 90s because the Blackwell children did not want to continue their dad's work (I know the family). The location was torn down and a Chrysler dealership was built in that place. Now there are no local dealers -- every car dealer is part of a large conglomerate.

Yep. People are upset that the only parts he visited were the “bad parts.” But many people saying that haven’t lived anywhere else but Jackson. Once you live somewhere that is way nicer, when you go back you really realize how depressing the city is. My family lives in Jackson, but I’ve never lived there. Always coming from my hometown to visit was always shocking to me. The roads are terrible. The houses are dilapidated. The buildings are abandoned. There are multiple stray dogs and cats everywhere. You see people standing around during the day instead of working, tons of litter, random cones in the street to cover pot holes, etc. JSU is nice but I never wanted to go there because Jackson as a whole is trash.

For a young waiter working at Shoney's who talked to waiters working at fine dining, I was making what they were making....It was unreal how busy it was...Oh and in the mornings, they had a BREAKFAST BAR....Oh god people would POUR IN. All you could eat breakfast was likk $4 and they had the best dirty rice ever!!! Some nights it was all you could eat fried Catfish and Shrimp. Was like $6.99 I think. Kids ate free on Wed. Kids were all over the place. Happy families. Eating, drinking (non alchol)....It is where I fell in love with the sound of dishes clanging together. Ther more I heard them clanging. the more I would make at the end of the shift.

You point is generally well-taken. I would point out, however, that Harrison and Jackson Counties collectively have a greater population than metro-Jackson. While the difference is not great, the Coast is growing at a nice clip.

I was raised in North Mississippi and lived in Jackson in the Belhaven area from 1983-1991. I still have relatives in Clinton that I occasionally visit. Words cannot express how much Jackson has declined since then. Just watch over your shoulder, especially after dark.

I work in construction engineering and am from Mississippi as well. What you have said is true but that sounds like a cop out as to why the roads look like they do. That's an easy fix if you have engineer that knows what he's doing. The main reason for the pot holes and rough roads in the state are due to heavy rainfall and flooding.

For expansive soil, like where I live in the desert southwest, post tension concrete slab are standard practice here. The tension wires keep the slab (in high tension) which prevents cracking or other issues.

You live in a really good area brandon and Flowood has lots of amenities for Mississippi and a few good ones too in Pearl with the Mississippi braves. Not to mention the amphitheater in Brandon. Lived in Brandon/Flowood Mississippi for 17 years of my life now I live in Ohio since April

That’s where I live as well. My dad works in Jackson and sometimes we’ll make trips there. Luckily he works in a “okay” section with office buildings and such.

I always felt bad for the sumatran or malaysian tiger in that little cage , just pacing back n forth and growling, what a miserable life that cat had. That city got worse and worse by the year post 80/90's. You don't feel safe in any neighborhood and almost no one maintains their property.

coming from the Mississippi delta visiting Jackson or Memphis back in the late 80's early 90's used to be the highlight of my year, sad to hear what's become of it.

Metro center comes to mind. In the early 80’s one of the high end department stores, maybe McRaes had a Ferrari filled with high end boxes of cologne. That mall was the bomb. There was a mall on the north side of town ,that was new at the time, but no comparison to Metro Center. Very sad!

As an outsider who has family in Jackson and visits every year, there are more opportunities in nicer areas, especially for your kids. More jobs, better schools, etc. I don’t think people should limit themselves to Jackson. Other cities or suburbs give people more opportunities. I know this because my family lives there and my parents have lived there compared to other cities. You can be successful but it’s harder when you live in a dilapidated city.

Whispering Pines... when I read that I thought "Christmas decorations". Was that the neighborhood where everyone put up Christmas decorations (hand painted and decorated signs with various messages) in their yard each year? Driving through that neighborhood in December was a special treat for me as a kid.

Of course there are nice areas of Jackson. There are nice areas of every city. However, when I visit a city I focus on the downtown and the area surrounding downtown. The downtown is the city’s heart and pulse, completely unique and different from any other city. Does the city encourage people to live in the downtown area, which in turn creates business, including restaurants and stores? A vibrant nightlife? Throngs of people walking on the sidewalks? Are the buildings maintained and inhabited? Jackson, unfortunately, fails in this. The downtown is a wasteland. There are no people living there. Many of the buildings are boarded up and literally collapsing into themselves. The streets are the worst I have ever driven on in the United States. Trash is littered everywhere. I hated to see it.

I can count the number of times I went into downtown as there is nothing there worth going to twice. There used to be a club called the Catwalk. It shuttered by 2000. Farish street had one or two nice soul food restaurants but the whole area is run down. On a weekend you would think Jackson is a ghost/abandoned city if you go downtown! All the nice clubs came and went never to return. Smith Park was scary! Mostly a haven for homeless folks.

This man is blaming busing in the 70’s but I grew up in the 80’s and I knew very few people who lived in the suburbs. Yes, I saw bad areas but you also have good areas such as artist area, civil rights museum (which is awesome) and I’ve stayed at two hotels (includes BW, which had internet) and I walked around that area and felt safe. Shoneys was closed at that time. Anyway found a really nice outlet mall had many nice stores and movie theater. You could see the southern charm in Jackson. Yes, streets are super raggedy

Jackson has been a victim of deliberate political neglect for decades, mainly from the state. The terrible conditions are seemingly desired by politicians who want to blame everything on the majority black population, who have been victimized by that neglect. Even federal money meant to improve conditions has been blocked by the state, and often redirected towards white-flight communities.

I worked there too... Homeless people on N. State St would hang on to my mirror at the stop lights.....I would drag them down the road! Get Out of Jackson!!!

Malls just about everywhere are in sad shape. Blame the avarice on suburban cities. Cities went on a rampant permit issuing/mall-building spree. This happened because, for a long time, communities went to great efforts to create commercial space. Retail ventures brought commerce, merchants and entertainment to cities and suburbs. But when even more suburbs sprang forth, the market became vacant retail space.

Yes!! I miss Metro so much. I was a kid in the 90’s and actually modeled for Metro Center in the late 80’s to early 90’s. Maybe I’m showing my age but I swear we all loved each other so much more back then.

Abandoned. Someone bought it a few years ago to do a renovation and turn it into retail, office space and apartments but it never happened. I think she got into some legal trouble before it happened.

It’s a shame, really. Jackson could be great. Another Atlanta, even. It’s been poorly managed, and will take years to fix.

From Los Angeles but family is from Southern Mississippi who migrated decades ago. Mom attended Jackson State in the 1950s. I've been to Jackson many times since childhood in the 1960s and 70s to visit family and later for business. Yes all those things you stated are true. However local politicians white AND black have played a huge role in Jacksons current state. The citizens of Jackson also bear some responsibility of by continually electing people with no political pull, economic vision, and who perpetuate the status quo for their own personal gain. Their lack of ingenuity, foresight, and integrity is accelerating Jacksons dangerous slide into obscurity. Like other post have stated I too can remember Jackson once as a beautiful and thriving capital city. Sad.

It's not that simple. White flight produced real estate bargains at the time it was going on -- decades ago. The bigots left long ago. Flight now is multiracial and mostly due to crime.

When I visit a city, and I have visited 65 major cities in the past 6 months, I explore it’s downtown and the area encircling it in a roughly 2 mile radius. Jackson was easily the worst of the 37. Shreveport, Louisiana was a fairly close second. I’m sure Jackson has nice suburbs, like virtually all cities. But I don’t visit them because they are boring and basically the same everywhere. The heart and soul of a city is it’s downtown and the surrounding area. Unfortunately, Jackson’s city center fails woefully compared to other cities.

Yep. It’s normalized. All my mom’s family lives in Jackson. I live in GA. Going to Jackson every year is shocking because each year it gets worse. Both my brothers went to JSU and thought the same thing you did. The people don’t know anything better so it’s acceptable and normal. It’s not normal when you’re not from Jackson though. It’s depressing

No, it was ONCE a GREAT city! Jackson, Mississippi was beautiful. During the mid 1980s, Jackson reached almost 250,000 people. It had excellent malls and the Jackson Zoo was among the best in the entire South. Those same malls today looks like something you'd see in Chechnya, Russia. The economic deprivation that was once confined to West Jackson, has now spread all over the entire city. Completely unlivable. The people living there don't realize how bad it is.

​@@Jaxxon123 If we use our history and knowledge it isn't that hard to see what may have happened here. think from 1980-now (since everyone is saying things were good then) , what things have taken place and what things may have been more brutal in this area: War on drugs, racial tensions, being one of the last cities that is still highly redlined, growing hip hop culture and more. These are all things I think contributes to it's current state. Why are there burnt down houses and stores on almost every block, could people not cook or could fires have been set intentionally? We can talk all day about this because there are things we can learn from a city like this.

The money that has been poured into that city, might as well have been flushed down the toilet. People have tried to invest in that city but nothing changes.
