I'm not from Jackson, but I love their snares. Jackson's snares crossover into all the different types of music they play without compromising the feel.

Even during the time, the stingrays were there back up drums for basketball games,prep-rallies, and minor events. They use their dynasty drums for football games and Battle of the Band events. Trust me, their music program isn't underfunded!!!

Continued... I’ve marched in this band, and let me say this…..when they are done playing their “show-band” material, I CHALLENGE ANY CORPS-STYLED percussionist to go to HEAD-2-HEAD with these guys on rudiments, as I know any of them would challenge you. I DARE YOU.
@Paralda
@Paralda 15 лет назад
I agree completely that everything isn't about pure technique. There is no more emotional instrument than a drum. If you're in a Corps and you're just playing notes and rhythms, you're doing something wrong.

JSU drums sound like that on purpose. It's a tradition for them to have that sound.
@TheDragonmaster18

@TenorBoy2011 this isnt dirty its just a different style. if everyone played the same way then no drumline can have its own thing. and this is one of the cleanest showstyle drumlines out there. and you are probably calling them dirty cause the way the snares are tuned.
@conpsiquence151
@conpsiquence151 14 лет назад
@Paralda actually you are very incorrect in your assumption. The first percussion instruments were made in Africa and were actually made from different size holes in the ground. When the player would smack the earth on the inside of the different size wholes it produced different tones. Later on the log drum and the djembe drum came into play.
@TheDragonmaster18
@TheDragonmaster18 14 лет назад
@MAGICmack23 dude its not crappy its just different. all showstyle bands really are is just old school military bands with show to it. thats why they sound the way they sound. and just because they are different doesnt mean they arenot good. and alot of people love this band. at halftime the stadium is full just to see this band and this isnot even the current drumline this is the alumni
@TheDragonmaster18
@TheDragonmaster18 13 лет назад
@seetherfan1369 cant you see this is for the fans. when yu play for non musicians this is what they want to see and this is a style that has been around since the 30's which is way before DCI came around
@Paralda
@Paralda 15 лет назад
So you're saying a Corps player who can play polyrhythms and hybrid rudiments at 200 bpm whilst running 4 to 5s across a football field would be unable to play 16th notes at 120 while backsticking? I don't think so.

I focus mainly on corpstyle drumming but I do like to add some showstyle stick tricks into my playing. Even though it may be a little dirty, show style drummers definitely have more entertainment factors and groove than corps.
@harmonicmenace
@harmonicmenace 10 лет назад
Isn't it strange that you NEVER see DCI ensembles performing at Super Bowl Halftimes? If its so precise, it's got to be entertaining RIGHT????
@TheDragonmaster18
@TheDragonmaster18 13 лет назад
@KiahIsLame this style of drumming has been ariund longer than DCI dude. this style of drumming has been around since the 1930's. this style actully comes from military roots and a lot of these cadences were inspired from military cadences but all this drumline and many others like this one just added dancing and tick tricks. and by the way you do realize this was for entertaining the crowd and as well this is from the 2006 season
@Congobruh4

aye aye aye aye aye. i got something to say. i agree with u, it does kills me when white ppl from corp style drumlines get on showstyle videos and talk shit about what it is that im HBCU percussion is doing or how bad their doing, yes we do play on 2 different styles but it doesn give yall no right to come on showstyle videos and talk shit about them becuz dey work jus as hard as any corpstyle percussion.

Look at Blue Devils, or even Phantom Regiment this year. They play to popular jazz and even emulate a drum set (with their major impact points... the inner-beats are still low). Quarter notes should never be played at a non-impact point.
@TheDragonmaster18
@TheDragonmaster18 14 лет назад
@MAGICmack23 not for showstyle cause all they do is entertain but they try at least to make it sound decent since the crowds they play for dont know what a drumline is suppose to sound like

@MAGICmack23 its not dirty its different and the snares have kelvar instead of mylar if they had mylar it'll be better. and listen to the current drumline they are good. and so what it aint perfect they not even trying to be perfect they are only for ENTERTAIMENT not being perfect cause its boring being perfect all the time

Actually, drums were invented in Asia/The Middle East, primarily around India in 5000 BC. And anyone can play the easy shit show bands play. I've seen maybe one show band player actually know how to play, and that was Ralph Nader.
@Paralda
@Paralda 15 лет назад
India is in Asia. And yes, anyone. Look at Drum Corps and try to tell me with a straight face that they couldn't blow away show bands' percussion sections. If you're not going to play your hardest, why play at all?

Strongly disagree. Many corps players lack a certain kind of techniques to play on certain equipment and in certain music. Corps players are good at playing corps style (in most cases).
@zeljr
@zeljr 15 лет назад
I respectfully disagree with you....I think its ok to be diifferent. Corp Style good. BUT this style is good also..If anything the movie drumline brought much needed attention to school music programs throughout the country..At the end of the day we are all musicians playing because we love music...

@chevbboy
@chevbboy 15 лет назад
This comment lets me know you are not ready to play this style. Everything is not about textbook technique in music (even though that is important). Just try it in its element first then we can continue this convo (or just ask someone with an objective POV). BTW... I have played both. Not a matter of which is better or worse, They are different and not interchangable. I have experience teaching students from both backrounds and notice the pros and cons of both. Just giving my thoughts.

I just love how white percussionists post on these clips about how their corps style is so much CLEANER and PRECISE than that of "show" bands. They try to make these "show" bands, which normally are comprised African-Americans, seem less technically proficient than that of their TIGHT-ASSED, regimented style of play. It’s just FUNNY to me that these MUSICIANS think they are "elite-enough" to criticize people whose entire musical LINEAGE came from that of playing drums. Whether using them to communicate between tribes, or as uniquely different as their Caribbean brethren that turned steel barrels into TUNED instruments, the LAST thing anybody CORPS-styled (and yes, by that I mean WHITE) can tell "show" band percussionists is HOW TO PLAY DRUMS, when you know NOTHING more than what came from a RUDIMENT BOOK. Those who can, DO; those who can’t, HATE.

Continued…. ….and BTW, don’t think we haven’t noticed over the last few years the PLETHORA of WHITE college bands that now play NECK, ALL I DO IS WIN, and any other new Hip-Hop song of the week. Considering that bands are supposed to be ENTERTAINING to SOME degree, I imagine that it feels GOOD to know that your crowd is ACTUALLY paying attention to what you’re doing for once, doesn’t it?????

@OndrausCissell
@OndrausCissell 15 лет назад
Well that is good to know! However, I thought if you are giving a public performance, pep rally or otherwise, you want to play on your best gear. I would hope that someone would put up a better video. . Although you can tell that the snares are some what clean. However, the bottom line is to me is don't you want the best sound for any public performance. Don't you want your students playing on a consistent playing surface all of the time anyway. If it is raining... then use the Stingrays.

They couldn't. This comparison is pointless. Could jazz blow rock away? Could classical blow blues away? I agree play your hardest or not at all. The content focuses on two totally different concepts with residue of each other due to setups and equipment.

now corpstyle percussion sections has the upper down becuz dey know a shit load of rudiments, sticking, etc. but showstyle percussion sections are better becuz dey kno how to entertain the crowd opposed to jus playin for no reason at all. corpstyle is hella boring. now there are some corpstyle drumlines that will give a showstyle drumline the business but at the same time there are alot of HBCU drumlines that will literally dig in corpstyle drumlines ass.
@XylussN

n yea ur right, the movie drumline did give a wrong impression... the wrong impression of what a BLACK drumline is. becuz the movie only is not even 1/4 correct on how a black marching is...thats the hollywood version of a marching band.....n u kno how we kno dat black marching bands are better? why is it that when a black marching band, HBCU and even high school put on a show at a NCAA college or white high school, y does it always end with the white ppl giving us standin ovations....point!!
@Photor93

@soulfuldancer no. show style is dirty. and always has the same simple beats. DCI is where the real talent comes from.

Nick R this is hbcu traditional marching not Corp style u child they still play the same rudiments and everything which is why none of Corp bands know how to march
@LHSclin10
@LHSclin10 13 лет назад
@KiahIsLame Well obviously I can't speak for everyone, but I've heard of DCI. WGI as well, which applies to this situation equally. What's your point? No wait, let me guess. You don't like this because it isn't the machine-like precision you're used to, and you have no soul (hah) when it comes to music. You think this is the dirtiest playing you've ever heard, and it's terrible. Well guess what? I love Ditty, Double Beat, and Blue Bucks. AND this. Now gtfo, and open your mind while you're at it.

I really feel sorry for these kids. They are playing their hearts out, but there drums sound horrible. STINGRAY drums are some of the most horrible drums you can play on It makes me wonder; are their music programs in such bad shape they are using drums athat are almost 20 years old. If they better drums and tuning they could sound much better. It would be nice to see other parts of the drumline as well however so much emphasis is put on the snare line TBC drumlines.

Man, i just can't respect this style of drumming when there's other college drumlines like Western Carolina University, University of Florida, Penn State, University of Northern Texas and other college drumlines with drum corps background. This style is sloppy and not really drumming in my opinion, way more dancing than anything.
