The fact that for many this is seen as a profound statement is an indication of how much the ‘success’ mindset has poisoned the west. There is no longer a sense of humility, or at least when some is shown, we praise it as though this is a unique mindset that only the virtuous adopt. Everyone is struggling to better everyone else. It’s really sad
"If you hadn't written that song, then we wouldn't be singing it", wow, that hit me right in my musical heart. Jacob is so gracious, but he is right to point that out too. And hats off to Chris, that's a truly powerful song, glad he wrote it.
For all the wonderful musicianship in this, one of the most incredible gems any musician could ever find is buried in the dialogue when Chris says ‘I don’t mind, I don’t need to be the best’ after Jacob questions his humility. That shedding of an ego, encapsulates the key to opening every creative door imaginable.
@@joelikesthings Couldn’t disagree more. I think the utter confidence and seasoning that comes from a career playing to filled stadiums in countless tours….allows you to not feel like you have to puff up your chest.
@@peterdanner2336 A lot of people who are incredibly wealthy or famous often feel like they don't deserve it and a sense of guilt comes with it. Chris seems like an incredibly kind and empathetic person and I can imagine the weight of all he's been and his success could wear down on his morality and sense of self. The main vibe I got from Chris was that he FEELS untalented and undeserving, no matter how untrue it is.
I swear to god since it was released I’ve listened to it every single day practically, and I still can’t get enough, I just wish they do it again somehow with a better audio quality . Just mesmerizing
Chris's reaction to Jacob after the first couple of words is hilarious and precious. He hides himself with the hat. I think he even got choked up a little right then.
Yeah, contrast the first two albums with their new “Higher Power” song, which is a dreadfully derivative children’s’ pop song. I really loath the direction they went in, it’s like the goal changes from writing beautiful timeless music to writing whatever is most likely to climb to the top of the charts.
@@TerryOffDairy Unlike so many pop bands Coldplay has maintained their four-piece format, and like many pop bands their later albums have reflected a desire to reach a larger audience through over-production, but I get the feeling that they'll return to their roots on a later album. That recent EP that they released may be an allusion to a future return to their original sound.
@@jacka.6237 if they don’t break up first. Imagine being the other three: you joined a rock band, you got to play real instruments, your parts were engaging and fun. Then your front man starts writing EDM children’s songs that’ll for sure climb the charts, but don’t give you much of an opportunity to play what you like. “Ok”, you think, “this is a phase, it’ll be over soon, and in the meantime the songs are topping the charts. I can deal with this for a bit”. But then a bit turns into a decade. You have grown to HATE your bands shitty pop produced commercial teenage girl music. You are in your mid 40’s, it’s embarrassing to play this shit. You just want to play some alternative ROCK again. You check your bank account, confirm that youre friggin set for life, and decide to leave. The magic is gone for you. It’s all so phony now, time to leave. Artistic differences.
Both Chris and Jacob are incredible. I think that the phrase, “I don’t need to be the best”, says so much: because I think people only say that in that way, if they’re the sorts of people whereby you have this burning desire to be great in the first place. It would be impossible to become one of the most well known bands on Earth without working extraordinarily hard, and to see (rightly or wrongly) someone who you think eclipses you…I’m not sure how to describe it, but I’m sure it hit him right in the feels at that moment. They are both brilliant, of course. I just think it’s a useful lesson for anyone: no matter how good you are, you may always bump into someone you feel is better than you. That’s exciting, not sad, because it’s a place you can grow.
Jacob isn't wrong. Sparks truly is a gemstone. My favorite coldplay song and one of my favorite songs ever. Chris is an inspiration. I wouldn't be a singer if it wasn't for Sparks and I think Jacob probably feels a little bit of that when he hears it.
This is actually the fundamental difference between someone like Martin and someone like Collier. Collier can interpret the fuck out of the a Martin song, but Collier couldn't write a song like Martin does to save his life. And I'm not knocking either of them.
This is so wholesome. Chris is such a cool artist. To literally be the frontman of arguably the most popular band of all time and to have this humility.. it’s just unfathomable. Such a cool moment to watch him acknowledge the genius of Jacob. He had the perfect response. Jacob performed it very well but without Chris, we would not have this gut-wrenching song. Cheers.
Would love to see a full version of this. Their voices go so well together. Chris's voice and Jacob's are so different but the camber of each balances so amazingly!
As gifted with a musical talent as Collier is, Chris Martin's voice is something of otherworldly effect on me… it shows that in music there's a space for genius, but there's a very very big space for unique voices as well. Think of a Sinatra, a Nat King Cole, a Roy Orbison, a Karen Carpenter, a Whitney Houston.. and a Chris Martin.. each voice a rare pearl slowly shaped by the strange miracle of DNA and life. Then they sing, and that voice penetrates my soul and it transcends all of this very biology, deep into the fabric of this Universe. Maybe I'm dust, but this dust feels very grateful that it can experience feelings that are so much beyond its comprehension.
To me it's exactly why even though Collier might technically have just exacting precision and genius-level knowledge of chords and notes and what makes music work, he still hasn't put out really anything all that good as far as self-released music. It's very "meh" to me. Technical music knowledge is only a part of the puzzle, being able to write interesting songs and sing them in a moving way is a WHOLE other thing.
@@ruffsnap Collier is the kind of musician that I don't take my initial reaction as the final assessment of its value. Sometimes my first impression is "meh", or "cute", or "weird", but I feel that my reaction tells a lot more about me than the music. The more I listen to his stuff, the more I realize its layers and my appreciation continually grows, and the more I enjoy it as I go back to it. At the end of each journey my inner universe has literally grown.
@@juancpgo I can definitely appreciate his genius, it's just not in songwriting from what I've seen. Being able to make catchy stuff is a whole other skill.
Chris Martin comments on the meeting between Antonio Salieri and Mozart opposite the film Amadeus. In my opinion, Chris belittles himself here. Antonio Salieri is in Mozart's shadow. Chris Martin will never be forgotten. He is a genius. Yeah, I saw sparks.
I think he gives himself too much credit. The distance between him and Jacob is enormous musically. But luckily for Chris, people want music for the people, most don’t ever recognize the musical genius of Jacob, and even less people appreciate geniuses in our modern time.
This is sublime. I think all artists should have the humbling experience of Jacob singing their song back to them. He is simply - a master interpreter. His chord voicings on this are other worldly and elevate an already stunning song to the next level.
Jacob is such a legend. He has a way of turning a compliment into a re-compliment for the one he's receiving from That's a beautiful way of dealing with other musicians
Love Jacob’s playing. Chris’s voice, phrasing and space got to the heart of the lyric more for me. Can be challenging for musically questing minds to play it simple. So much beauty there…
Lots to love and appreciate about this video. At least 9 of them in fact: #1. Sparks is probably my favorite Coldplay song. #2. The birds chirping as soon as they start playing. #3. Advantage to Jacob for being the one playing the music. Chris has to deal with a delay and doesn't have the luxury of the music among him as he sings (I think it's way easier to sing when you are playing the music yourself). #4. Chris braces himself for Jacob's verse even before he begins. Watch his body language, he knows he's about to witness something special. #5. The little minor change at 2:15 that adds depth to the song. Chris pulls his hat down immediately after hearing it. Like him, I didn't see that coming but boy does it create some complexity. #6. Jacob then builds a beautiful crescendo against those minor half steps he rolls over. #7. The Amadeus reference is spot on. #8. 2 very humble and grateful musicians. #9. Jacobs jokes about Chris and his success. Thanks for posting.
Chris has written so many wonderful songs that have touched so many people. I find it so beautiful that he was moved when Jacob sang his song back to him. This moment was such a gift for both musicians (and us who were blessed enough to witness it), even though he got a little embarrassed.
3:52 Jacob realizes Chris' little anecdote comparing him to Mozart, and gives a slight smirk. And I know Jacob is too humble to be compared to Mozart, but I think he really is.
I have to comment! When someone plays back your song to you it’s a special moment indeed, when someone plays back your song and transforms it to a whole new level it’s an entirely different feeling! Chris used a great analogy and I think I felt some of his emotion on that performance!
this is soo incredible.. thank you Chris Martin for creating what an amazing heart warming song... and thank you Jacob Collier for giving us such amazing colour and emotion ... simply wow... simply just effing wow..!!!!
i will never not tear up to this song, and seeing chris do the same finished me for today. and the very fact they did this over insta live is unbelievable. also we need a chris + jacob collab ASAP. it really is one of the 3 songs in existence that'll make me shed a tear
I was walking up the stairs after a real rough night today, things were tossing and turning in my head with no such clarity or purpose just a really bad space. This came on out a blue. I was really in a bad headspace and usually I don't let people know about my fears or saddens and most often times I don't let my self know about it either but as I was walking up the stairs to my home, I stopped. I was on the verge of breaking down when jacob's part comes in and as he played on I cried like a bitch to say the least but it was beautiful, it was like a whole building was lifted off of my shoulders. Thank you Jacob. I with all my heart love you man, I don't know if I'll be ever as great or even close to what you are but I'll keep on trying, I'll never give up. That's a promise. Thank you for showing me the light, thank you with all my heart where ever you are right now in the world. You are a Jemstone of a person and I hope that I get to meet you one day to tell you this in real life. Cheers! Akash :)
I can't even explain it. Its like this music level is so beyond my palate. One of my fav songs, and Chris' so so so good. Then you hear Jacob, and I'm not even sure if I like it better or hell...is it even good?! Its like my ears can't even make sense of it. I'm really genuinely not sure, yet I can't stop listening!
Still come back here to this day - literally the best version of this song hands down😭 I don’t even think it could be replicated the same way in studio, it’s just that perfect
I had to turn my screen to show my partner this. When it was done I said "wasn't that beautiful". Agree with both of their compliments to each other. The song *is* such a gemstone, and collier has such expertise with harmony and piano. It's really inspiring and heartwarming.
My goodness, those chords... mesmerizing... Brilliant arrangement! I love Jacob and all his freaky chords and stuff, but this might be just the best I've ever heard from him!
this whole video is therapy. i grew up going through a lot and coldplay helped me through it all. Jake is just magic. An unfathomable being all around. Found this sometime yesterday. It's 3am now and im still going
