Pro Yakyuu Spirits: • Pro Yakyuu Spirits 201...
Key observations (bullet points below):
Of a real pitcher, also seen frequently with PYS pitchers ... listed below
but either lacking or completely flawed with MLB the Show.
Pitching is essentially the body falling to one side...with a few pointers:
✅ real: violent ‘follow-through’, resulting a snapping or fast recoil of the head, torso.
⭕️ mlb the show: the ‘follow-through’ is slow, methodical and smooth; no ricochet and no recoil is one of the main reason why the pitching for all their ‘show’ pitchers are off, and unrealistic.
🔵 freeze frames sequences will not showcase this important component (found with real footage and pro yakyuu spirits pitchers), you must watch the clips playing at ‘normal speed’ to actually see the violet follow-though (snapping, fast recoil)
✅ real: forearm and upper arm pose positions creating visible triangles
⭕️ mlb the show: arm triangle either don’t exist or completely broken, or off
✅ real: strong curvature arc of the back when arm creates triangle
⭕️ mlb the show: pitcher’s has a straight back
✅ real: ‘rearing back’: shoulder & arm staying back while the hips lead the pitch (torso-hip separation) creating strong torque. This is why you will see the pitcher’s gluteal backside exposed and turning before you see the jersey’s back number. Secondly, the arms are still ‘reared back’ while the hips are leading. A real pitcher’s body is already rotating forward before the arms have finished rearing back. During a pitch: 1st: hips, 2nd: torso/chest, 3rd: arms follow through
⭕️ mlb the show: the upper torso, arms, and lower body moves in unison. No visible power is or can be generated. The ‘rearing back’ effect is not replicated. There is no separation between torso, arm, and hips - massive reason why mlb the show pitcher’s don’t look like they’re pitching, but rather ‘pushing’ (or shot putting the ball forward).
🔵 reference: 12 principles of animation - look up ‘follow through and overlap’.
✅ real: torso and head lean
⭕️ mlb the show: pitchers are too upright, too vertical. It lacks head and torso lean.
✅ real: the player sits (or squats) down during the wind up
⭕️ mlb the show: pitchers do not (or rarely) sit or squat down far enough during the beginning sequence of the windup. Pitching involves the whole body including legs. To generate power from the legs during a pitch, the pitcher needs to bend their legs and push off with their foot. It is not replicated well in the Show.
✅ real: mlb players often tuck their glove side arm close to their body (not all pitcher’s but many do)
⭕️ mlb the show: pitcher’s often have their glove side arm protrude outward, making them look like pterodactyls
