Acid dyes will only work on protein fibres, silk, wool, feathers & nylon. They won’t dye cotton or straw, them may stain them but the dye won’t move into the fibre. The heat step is necessary (via heating the item in the dye bath or steaming after sitting in the dye bath) to set the dye, otherwise the colour may run when worn or washed.

Did you wash your fabric after dying? It softens yarn. I only put a tiny amount in my hand and rub together as if I'm washing my hands. Not directed onto yarn. Any extra color if remaining will come out but it should be clear.

Hello Atty! Thank you for watching my video 😊 I don't know of any specific good books to help with colour theory, but you might find a "colour wheel" helpful. You can buy these on Amazon. Also at 5:57 in this video I show a colour wheel with dye mixing recipes that you can reference. Basic colour theory is: Magenta + Yellow = Red | Magenta + Cyan = Purple | Cyan + Yellow = Green.

I am very lucky to have had access to a very good education. Although I must confess I actually really struggle with numbers - I find letters a lot easier which is why I prefer everything to be expressed in algebraic terms. I also had no chemistry in my education - I just know where to find the relevant resources to read.
