As a kid watching Plante made me play goal. I idolized Plante he was a Go to me, not just a good exciting goalie to watch but that Plante mask was the coolest and still is in my eyes. I didn't know the history on him until many many years later. RIP Mr. Plante

When I see the helmets/mask of the past warriors I often wonder if Plante saw these mask and took them under his wing because the last one that he wore looks like some of the ancient masks. He died fairly young what a shame. Thanks for this video

Look, he died of cancer, very little can survive it. If he survived now, he would actually still suffer

The Boston Bruins were "lackluster" in in 1973? Hardly. They were 51-22-5 and were the defending Stanley Cup champions. They had a couple of guys named Orr and Esposito who weren't half bad, to say the least. After Gerry Cheevers jumped to the WHA, the only thing the 1972-73 Bruins lacked was a good goalie. That's why they picked up Plante late in the season. Plante played poorly in the playoffs versus the New York Rangers and his NHL career came to an abrupt end.

Lava you are spot on, Boston and Toronto were hurt the most with the start up WHA. Loosing Mackenzie, Sanderson and Walton they didn't quite have enough to repeat as champions.

Getting traded to the Rangers was considered punishment then and now.

JACQUES PLANTE played before my time, but I read his book 'ON GOALTENDING' when I was very young and used the knowledge contained within to develop my abilities with. Having been our only goalie from 1980-1989, I faced alot of shots and realized my potential as a human being very early on in life as I played MINOR HOCKEY. Sadly I was disabled at age 13 and was unable to achieve what was possible, but at least I am forever a damn good goalie as I was. PLANTE and RANFORD taught me so much, I attended BILL RANFORD's goalie school back when he was only 19 years old at SYLVAN LAKE GOALIE SCHOOL. Those days are decades and decades gone now, which is odd to see. I did end up playing again in my adult years and regained my abilities between the pipes for 3 years in my mid 30's and made some huge saves in Beer League which was extra special to regain that years later. I had been attacked at age 13 and had amnesia for 17 years from December 1989 to December 2006. If I only realized back then what had actually happened. GOALTENDING makes so much sense to me. Sort of like looking at the Ocean also I have the same peace of mind or enjoying the energy of the swells. The tempo on the ice and greeting the opponent in my own end, there is something similar to that and a big ocean swell coming in to shore. Peaceful thoughts.

I had to buy a second book because I separated it from the binding.

@@gynandroidhead I sure wish today's goalies would realize the FOUNDATIONAL IMPORTANCE of asserting a very strong challenge at times when there is no one else around the side of the net and you are facing a puck carrier just entering the zone. Today's goalies are waaaay too deep in the net at all times, even when they should be asserting influence over the puck carrier's actions through their challenge tendencies/aggressive challenge. Paddle down paddle down and push slide for all movement is just stupid goaltending if you ask me. They should be using heavier wooden goalie sticks too so the stickblade stays on the ice by itself as well. It's so backwards now to see them playing like LUNDQVIST's style I guess everyone seems to have reverted to fully or at least towards his very deep in the net, paddle down tendencies.

Ive been searching for the name of the song playing in the background for years. They played a Pelle Lindbergh tribute and used the same song. Does anyone know the name and artist of that song?

lack luster boston bruins? 1973 they were unbelievable, Bobby Orr, stanly cup in 72, finals in 74, they were anything but lackluster

He did not invent the mask. He was the 1st to wear one in the NHL. He won 18 games in a row once he put on the mask.

2:20 - TOE BLAKE had a 20 minute stand off with PLANTE who demanded to come back to play in the game in which his face was all mangled? That's unbelievable that BLAKE had that sort of authority instead of the refs or the league itself.

Back in the 6 team league when teams played each other often, Plante played on Canadien teams with a powerful offense. He didn't have to face the shots of Richard, Beliveau, Geoffrion and others.

Imo its tough to say who was the best goalie but plante and brodeur are the two most revolutionnary for sure and both in the conversation for greatest of all time
@derekknight9789
@derekknight9789 Год назад
PLANTE is from another era. You can't compare them easily. PLANTE was revolutionary, where as BRODEUR was not. BRODEUR was a clone of ROY & HEXTALL in certain ways for certain. PLANTE is like a 53' CORVETTE. You can't tell me that a modern CORVETTE is better than a 53' Corvette in terms of value and appreciation. HASEK and BRODEUR and ROY stand apart from their generation. The goalies from their generation/era were all spectacular at times. The quality of the game has deteriorated since that recent era. Wooden GOALIE STICKS should be mandatory. The D no longer blaze huge slapshots like they used to. The goalies never challenge like they should anymore. How sad.
