In the 16th Century, when the conquistadors led by Cortéz were pillaging his country, Moctezuma, the Aztec emperor, is supposed to have said : « Fortunately these foolish invaders are only interested in gold ; not in our jade ! »
In Guatemala the pre-Columbian Indians, the Mayas in particular, for centuries considered jade to be a sacred stone. They made many objects from it, masks in particular, but it was also a currency for barter.
This film takes you on a veritable archeological adventure.
After much research, two North American archeologists succeeded in finding the exact location of the ancient Indian jade mines which had fallen into oblivion for five centuries.
Through this film you will be privileged to access the Cancuén archeological site which is being excavated. Here, on the route of the Maya jade, archeologists have recently discovered the antique city of a powerful lord who had built a jade industry and who sold the jade in the city-states of the Maya world.
Tikal is on of those cities. It is covered over by the Peten jungles and was abandoned well before the arrival of the conquistadors. In this film the city reveals some of its secrets and treasures.
Have you dreamt of going into the reserves of one of the most famous archeological museums in the world ? By following this documentary adventure you will enter the museum of Guatemala Ciudad where the jade jewelry, the steles, the potteries and mummies are part of the decor.
Antigua is the colonial town preserved from the ravages of time and the surrounding volcanoes. It shelters factories manufacturing copies of ancient jade objects as well as modern jewels.
In this film you will be introduced by a master craftsman to an ancestral custom - that of engraving intaglio on a gem, particularly jade which will be used in the creation of a jewel.

@@romanmartha5359 Gemstones are all about visual appeal. Even the very BEST that Guatemalan jade has to offer will not compare favorably to the brilliant colors, watery translucency, mirror polish of Burma jadeite. Yes, it is more expensive, but one gets what one pays for. Conversely, I've never seen a single piece of Guatemalan jade, at any price, that comes close to imperial green Burma jadeite.

@@Indrid__Cold agreed gemstones are about their physical characteristics, but also personal meaning and attachments. Since I buy jewelry for personal use and not resale, its history and cultural significance wins over it being of "better quality". I've been in the jade trade for twelve years. With the exception of the "galactic black" which is a black jadeite flecked with pyrite, I have not seen any Guatemalan that would be worth the effort to transport it to China for cutting/carving. The stones are minimally translucent, and do not seem to take a polish as well as the Burma material (although that may be the inexperienced crafters working the stone).

It hurts me to watch them "mine" the Jade - they don't know what they're doing. They need thinner bits and drill holes every 6" along the direction that they want to split. They can ream out the top 5 " of the smaller and deeper holes to put in the feathers and wedges. (better yet, use smaller feathers and wedges) What they are doing is brutallizing the stone and stressing it - causing cracks where they don't want cracks. p.s. those aren't "diamond tipped bits" They're carbide. You can't use diamond bits on a hammer drill. You have to use water with diamond only for cutting or abrasion. Diamond is brittle and can't take percussion.

Here in Aotearoa/new zealand us maori call jade, pounamu, a sacred healing stone, i have never seen a maori carver attack a piece of pounamu in this manner. We always say ancient karakia, prayers, to the gods and ancestors. Cutting stone is a very solemn, reverential action. On the west coast of our south island where most pounamu is found, there are sandstones embedded on the beach, they have furrows from hundreds of years of stone being rubbed to create weapons, hooks, chisels, and if you go to the arahura river on the west coast south isle, it is permitted by the local maori tribe, who are the guardians of the stone, that you can find a piece of jade, if u can carry your piece, you can keep it.

I wonder why the voice over was necessary when the speakers were perfectly well spoken in English, experts, and sound appeared good...? I'm wary now of other videos of voiceovers by this production team bc of how many times the narrator changed words as tho editing expert speakers, and losing nuance. Replacing "cultures" for "civilizations" is perplexing and wrong. Civilizations are political etc while culture means the physical remains. Why replace artifacts for artworks esp, again, as an ARCHAEOLOGIST is talking? Whoever is responsible for this injudicious editing is not knowledgeable and degrades a valuable documentation of this region. I'm disappointed.

Once you have seen the nearly transparent texture, as well as the vivid greens, yellows, reds, and purples of Burma jade, you can never be satisfied with the pale colors and weak translucency of Guatemalan jadeite. To put it another way, Burma jadeite is a precious gem, Guatemalan jadeite is a decorative rock.
@Indrid__Cold
@Indrid__Cold Год назад
@@richardwasserman Not really. I’m just a collector for many years. I took a long look at the Guatemalan material. It was usually barely translucent, and what little emerald green material there was, it was barely translucent. Burma material was usually richly colored in bright greens, violets, and reds. In short, if the Guatemalan material looked anything like Burma jadeite, the mountains containing it would have been mined out by now.

IT WOULD SEEM TO ME THAT THE INTENSE POVERTY IN GUATAMALA WOULD DRIVE THE RESIDENTS TO WANT BETTER FOR THEMSELVES. RELYING ON TOURISM AND FARMING ONLY, MUST BE DEEPLY DIFFICULT. THE LACK OF TEETH, THE INTENSE POVERTY, UNSPAYED/ UN NEUTERED GOS IS OVERWHELMING TO ME, BUT THEY DO NOT SEEM TO WANT ANYTHING BETTER?
