Jaeger-LeCoultre owns an unrivaled legacy of ultra thin watchmaking. Since the company’s first venture with Parisian partner Edmond Jaeger - the 1.38mm “Cal. 145” - wowed the world in 1907, ultra thin engineering has been a specialty of the manufacture from Le Sentier. This rose gold 40mm Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin takes tradition to the next level.
This generation of JLC Master Ultra Thin cases combine serious refinement with equal measures of substance. Less than 10mm thick (8.6mm, to be precise), the wrist presence of this watch is elegant but never quaint; a 39mm diameter ensures that nobody mistakes this modern marvel for a petite vintage bauble.
As a true manufacture, Jaeger-LeCoultre builds both the movement and the case that contains it; the benefit is engineering integration enjoyed by few rivals. Look no farther than the unusually robust 50-meter water resistance rating for the advantage of JLC’s in-house approach; most dress watches offer only 30-meter assurances.
Jaeger-LeCoultre's caliber 896 features all of the hallmarks of a manufacture par excellence; ceramic rotor bearings; high-efficiency unidirectional winding; sub-4mm thickness, and laser-welded hairspring. It's fine, slim, and still everyday tough; think Karen Allen in "Raiders of the Lost Ark," and you get the idea.
The Jaeger-LeCoultre Master series took a huge aesthetic leap forward with the Ultra Thin model. The sports watch style lugs and massive proportions of the 2000s-era JLC Master cases often felt too massive an emotionally frigid for dress models. No more; the new Master Ultra endears itself to the user with an off-white eggshell dial and delicate 18-karat rose gold case that are as warm as hot cocoa at an Alpine ski lodge.
And JLC adds marshmallows; the applied rose gold indices, gulloche seconds subdial at six o’clock. Gleaming pink gold dauphine hands complete a picture of elegance that must leave JLC’s Richemont Group fellow brand Vacheron Constantin worrying about a black-tie turf war with its younger cousin from Le Sentier.

I tried this watch on last week and I must say, it wore a lot better than I had expected. It really is a lovely. In fact, with its longish, but curved lugs, I found it wore better than a 5196.

Honestly, one of the best values in luxury watches. I'll put this up against Patek or Vacheron any day. Plus, this is an automatic and not a manual wound.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this is the 40mm version. The indices at 9 and 3 are longer on the 38.5mm than they are on the 40mm watch and on the 40mm the minute markers are black vs gold on the 38.5.

pimpinken12 Hi pimpinken, you're absolutely correct! Don't know how I missed this one (...slaps forehead...). This is the 40mm 174.2.90 model, and I totally goofed on the case size. The other information is correct, but the case is 40mm vs. the 38.5 of the current model. Thanks for setting me straight ;-) Best, Tim

watchuwantinc The only reason I know this is because I'm really interested in the 38.5mm and got excited that your site had it. I was set on the 40mm for so long, but have been considering a smaller size. It is this or the geophysic that will complete my collection. I got my stupid Rolex blue black instead, but need to scratch the JLC itch. Thanks for the clarification, there are a few statements that you made that are affected by the size difference (comparison to VC), but it's still a better watch anyway. Do I get a special discount for this catch? ;-) Keep up the amazing work and I'll keep learning.

I totally glad that you caught it! While it's a bit of a red-face moment for me, I'm bound to miss one every 500 videos or so... Size notwithstanding, I still feel that this MUT offers a viable alternative to VC on many counts, so I'll leave the video up with corrections to the write-up. And if you do decide to buy with us, let me know, and I'll ask the sales associates to offer you some "wiggle room" for catching my off-day! Personally think its still too big for a thin dress watch. But I prefer vintage size. I really think the dinner plates will decline

Adam Smith Hi Adam, I think your viewpoint is increasingly influential within the industry. There has been a pronounced jump in the number of sub-40mm case debuts over the last three years, and some of the new launches at Basel 2015 were treading on territory not seen in years (38.5mm ALS Saxonia Auto, 35mm Saxonias.... 35mm Nomos Tangente...!). My personal JLC Master Ultra Thin is the original 1994 34mm/Cal. 849 model, so I have a great appreciation for traditional case sizes. However, I don't believe that 39 feels ungainly in the form of this JLC Master Ultra Thin 39mm. It will feel more natural to those who are not accustomed to vintage sizes, traditional watches, and who have no preconceived notion of how large a formal watch should be. In many ways, these larger formal watches are "bridges" designed to bring sports watch owners over to the more genteel side of the watch world. Let's look at the bright side; if modern buyers weaned on sports watches choose these 39mm JLCs over diamond-studded Hublots, an angel probably gets his wings and a taste travesty is averted ;-) Best, Tim

+Adam Smith For some people it would be a perfect dress watch because it is thin but with a large time face which means it is easy to see. Especially for older people.

True. I've been giving some thought to what I might buy my dad when he retires, and legibility is a real consideration. His eye sight never was excellent, but a retirement watch has to remain a reliable companion into one's 70s, 80s, and hopefully beyond. Best, Tim

I hadn't considered visibility. I suppose the more quietly styled dress watches can be less legible than louder, sportier pieces. Even a slight scaling up would improve matters. It's a timeless piece, a style that will always be cool, age well

I think it depends alot on your wrist size, if you have huge wrists with a 34mm it kinda looks like your wearing a kids watch, but small wrists and a 44mm it look like your wearing a clock on your wrist. Being small wristed i love smaller piece being out of fashion so i can grab them at bargain prices and the new watches coming out in smaller sizes also:).
