Late November in India is Diwali, the festival of lights ; candles are lit everywhere, firecrackers go off all night.
After that…there's complete silence...Except in Chandernagore, West Bengal.
What distinguishes this former French trading post from other Indian cities is a second festival of lights, much more grandiose, which is spread over five days, as if to set the tone for Christmas and the New Year.
JAGADDHATRI, the Beloved Goddess recounts the advent of a goddess in a body of mud and straw shaped by local artists. Jagaddhatri means "the Holder of the Universe". Since the 18th century the tale is told that She descends on Earth for five days and five nights among men before returning to heaven via the sacred Ganges until the following year.
This film is not intended to promote a belief, nor to denigrate as archaic a 250-year-old religious event. What no one will deny, however, is that this practice, far from decreasing with the progress of modernity, endures, more alive than ever.

Fin novembre au Bengale Occidental c’est Diwali, le festival des lumières. On allume des bougies partout, pétards et feux de fortune retentissent toute la nuit.
Puis… c’est le silence….
Sauf à Chandernagore (modern day Chandannagar). Ce qui distingue cet ancien comptoir français des autres cités indiennes, c’est un second festival des lumières, bien plus grandiose, qui s’étale sur cinq jours, comme pour donner le ton à Noël et au nouvel an.
JAGADDHATRI, la Déesse bien-aimée, raconte l’avènement d’une déesse dans un corps de paille et de boue façonné par des artistes locaux de Chandernagore. Jagaddhatri signifie la Porteuse de l'univers. Elle descend du ciel pendant cinq jours et cinq nuits parmi les hommes avant de regagner sa demeure céleste via le Gange sacré jusqu'à l'année suivante.
Ce film n’a pas pour vocation de mettre en avant une croyance, pas plus que de dénigrer comme archaïque un événement religieux presque tricentenaire. Mais force est de constater que cette pratique, loin de disparaitre avec les progrès de la modernité, perdure, plus vivace que jamais.
