We were stalked and nearly killed by a hungry jaguar in the Amazon Rainforest in Suriname, South America.
While paddling the first full descent (to our knowledge) of the remote Tanjiemama Creek, a jaguar found us, came at all four of us, and would not leave, even with splashing.
While jaguar attacks in the Amazon are rare, they do happen. Most attacks are on solo persons, even children, and I'm not aware of any on people in inflatable kayaks (packrafts), as we were.
We escaped by furiously paddling, and nervously camped that night only a mile from the site of the encounter - the jaguar likely saw where we camped that night.
We met several guys who had lived in the jungle nearby, and they had never even seen a jaguar.
So, we were both unlucky and lucky to have this amazing and terrifying encounter.
