Taking my 2015 Jaguar F-Type Project 7 to the S.France on some of my favourite roads plus a visit to the Le Mans Circuit Museum along the way. Before we left, I also updated the P7 by fitting an Incore Infotainment unit to the car as I wanted to see how good these units actually are.
Here's a link to the Cayplay unit I fitted: unique-ad.co.u...

Love these trips....whetting the appetite as this time next week we will be driving all the way down from London to the south of France, via the A75 (1200kms) for the summer holidays! That motorway is the most beautiful in Europe….millau is great! If you travel on a Sunday, there are no lorries on the road. Calais, Rouen, Chartres, Clement Ferrand to Beziers is our way, some of those autoroutes are free, the A7 travelling east of Paris is busy and expensive.

I went to Millau with my sceptical family because of Top Gear, and they were completely won over by the beauty of the bridge and the area around it. An interesting detail: There are no structural or topographical reasons for the curve of the bridge: It´s pure aesthetics: Foster wantetd you to see all the pillars as you go over it... And it´s magical.

Fantastic! We have a trip planned to Millau and the Aveyron region as soon as harvest is over here in the Saskatchewan Prairies. Visits to France have always been basically to family - and rushed - but family are now no longer with us. I’m now 70 so our trip this time will be sort of open ended and much more leisurely. All I need is for a good crop and prices to hold where they are, then I will push the boat out and hire a decent car, not the usual mid range hatchback thing. Flying into Toulouse will also be a first for us. Keep the videos coming - on both cars and farming. My appetite is well and truly whetted for our trip, 5 years since our last one.

I did a similar route from Caan , via Le Mans , down to a place called Montreal ( no not Canada! ! ) near Carcassonne . It was year 2000 , on holiday with my family in Alfa Romeo 75 3litre . Drove all the way down . We did not see the Viaduct on the way there, but took an alternative route back, drove under it through a deep valley. Beautiful scenery down there . High quality road surfaces, whether on main roads or going up mountains on side roads. Happy days . Thanks for bringing back the memories , if unintentionally!

Now you have said that, maybe not the very same bridge. I remember on the way down , we came off some Autoroute near Souillac , and they were in the process of extending the route down to Cahors, so we had to take the N9 standard road only to encounter a horrific bottle neck of traffic-held us up possibly hour or more, in scorching heat too. So on return wanted to avoid all that and took minor roads, coming across this incredible gorge with river below, and this bridge so high up above our road and river running alongside, quite breathtaking. I’ve been looking at my original 1997 Michelin Europe map that I took with me at the time, to try and retrace my route back! No CarPlay , Tom Tom , Co -pilot , sat nav system used back then !

I believe CarPlay actually uses WiFi and not bluetooth. This seems to confuse a lot of people when trying to connect to other WiFi networks as it's not what they expect (bluetooth doesn't have the bandwidth to handle CarPlay, which is effectively streaming the entire user interface to your car's head unit in addition to audio).

Norman Foster is a great architect but Milau bridge is not the work British should be the most proud of. It is mostly an engineers project, the main structure was more or less already designed and Foster did very little of it, from my understanding he mostly designed the look of the upper part. If anybody has more specific informations I am interested.

As for the Apple Carplay retrofit, I had something similar done in my car to get Android Auto. Initially there was a Bluetooth issue as well. In order to fix it the shop disabled Bluetooth voice calls on the retrofit box, and allowed voice calls to go through the car's original Bluetooth system. The boxes and systems may differ between cars, but it may be worth exploring.

There are some really great roads down by Millau but avoid the tarn gorge roads themselves, too many 30’s, 50’s, 70’s and speed humps. I came from Cannes cross country via Chateau Neuf-de-Pape crossing the mountain plateau’s and caught up a Tesla P100. Max acceleration and on the limit cornering for 30 miles from village to village, superb!. Problem is when I’m looking for good roads, I use a combination of gut feeling and compass heading to weave from A to B to C so couldn’t find that 10/10 route again, even if I tried. Old sat nav’s used to record where you’d been, progress hey?The Col de Turini is brilliant also with at least three routes to it. 😎😇

And for the one listening please don’t pay attention to the pronunciation of French city names from Harry as it’s honestly super bad 😱😱😱😂 From Caen to Limoges to Millaut,… You went so many times to France for obvious reasons that I’m sure you can do a bit better than that 🤗🥳🇫🇷👍🏻 Example Millault that you prononce as “me lao” is in fact “me yo” trying my best to translate into phonetic. Love your true british posh accent otherwise 👍🏻

I love paper maps and then adding to them with the route taken and anything worth noting on the way. Great to look at years later.

Did that area (D907) in southern France a few months ago on a road trip with my son. France has some great driving roads…thoroughly enjoyed the trip…and this video!

Crumbs ... that brought back some memories. Really only one place hadn't changed much since I was there - the Gorges du Tarn. Under somehat different circumstances; I was holidaying with my folks - Mum, Dad and my sister - just over 50 years ago! 😁The overhanging rockface and tunnels were - and clearly still are - amazing. The car I was in at the time .... Austin 1800 'Land crab'. The hydrolastic suspension was brilliant over any bad road surfaces and it carried 4, plus a boot groaning with luggage, in relative comfort. 😀

Nice trip again. I installed the same Car Navigation kit, 2 years ago in my F-Type 2014 3.0 S. it works lovely but it is not always connecting automatically. When near the car, Bluetooth connection, car unlocked, then walk to far from the car and coming back, the connection can’t reconnect again. Lock the car, walk away far enough, then get in and it will connect. But, it’s a wonderful update. Oh, bye the way… when I was searching for a kit like this, I could only find workshops in the UK. In the Netherlands only 1… and fortunately only 5 km from home!!! 😁

Harry I've been visiting the Millau area for 30 years and know those roads you took intimately and I have to suggest that the Jag is too much for them. All that power is just wasted, especially in the Tarn Gorge. You can rarely get above 60km. I've driven all sorts down there but the most fun were an Alfa 75 TS and a 156 Sportwagon (I always had family). But you're right about the viaduct, the best view is definitely from below, down by the river.

Hey Harry, an update and a thank you. You introduced me to Michelin maps, (rather than those thick spiral bound things), how come I didn’t realise how brilliant they were before? You showed me how to easily and cheaply buy a Tag for French motorways from Eurotunnel, it will save my wife from climbing half out of the window of the SL to reach the slot to feed an unknown (till you get there) amount of Euros into the Peage. Now you’ve shown me the alternative route from Millau to the Côte d’Azur. We should be in Millau again a week on Sunday en route to St Maxime and I’ll be taking the D907 and D9 onwards to the south east. Thank you Sir. TonyS

Always good to plan the overall route and overnight stops using a proper map. Have no idea how you get away with your wife agreeing to just 1 overnight stop in 1,000 miles to the south. Our place is near Aix en Provence and from Norfolk it’s always 3. Somewhere around Wimereux, then La Chartre then around Vichy. Can understand 1 less as via Caen ( that route with Brittany is so £££££ though)🙄

Thanks for putting me on to this retrofit CarPlay kit, Harry! I’ve just installed it in my 2010 L320 RRS and couldn’t be happier. Love the channel.

Driving from Nice to Borges Xmas 2005 and went down under the Millau bridge to get some photos right about where Harry was. Had a Renault 19-16-s at the time. Well I liked it LOL. Before the bridge was open all the traffic had to go down into the valley and in the summer this caused huge traffic jams. lots of good rally`s in the area. Problem with the narrow roads is you are always nervous about a truck coming around the corner towards you.

Hi Harry, a US viewer here. I have this same Car Play/Android kit on my F-Type R 2016. I have found that the audio quality when using this kit is far inferior to that of even the bluetooth connection to the stock headunit. Hopefully my experience is not common, but a word of caution.

Just had Apple Car Play (ACP) added to my 2014 SL. It works wirelessly and defaults to ACP I had the same issue with the phone connectivity initially. It was sorted out by the installer over the phone. It continues to use the car's telephone system (via Bluetooth) for incoming and outgoing calls. I can answer a call using the buttons on my steering. To make a call I use "hey Siri". It is worth you going back to the installer to get this resolved. It is usually to do with settings on the phone to maintain the connectivity to ACP and also use the car's bluetooth connectivity.
