This is very true! My grandfather helped create Ebony magazine with Johnny Johnson (as we call him), so black celebrities of that time were considered family friends but were all miserable. They had no control over their lives and always came from childhood tragedy. Ever wonder why you hear very few celebrities coming from a decent home or childhood? Having this family background, my solution has always been to be a fan of the art, not the artist. We don't know these people from a can of paint, yet we worship and emulate them in the worst ways. Being a fan of the art holds the artist accountable. If the art ever goes to trash, we can recognize it and easily move on. And other artists will think twice b/f putting out trash for us to consume. Being a fan of the artist keeps you emotionally tied, so even when they do wrong, you don't care and look the other way. That's how we got to where we are now. Just to show how little we know, here's a fun fact: Cissy Houston is not Whitney Houston's real mother. Her real mother is Teresa Graves. Look her up. They are twins, and Whitney sings like her. In order to move up they had to give sloppy toppy to two execs. The guy who shared this story walked away while his friend did what the execs asked for and blew up and became famous.
