I appreciate that this post is now pretty old however it does cover a very important topic which few JLR dealers seem interested in. Having asked the question “ when should my transmission oil be replaced” to various dealers most have no idea or have never had to do so. Answers I’ve had being it’s sealed for life or every 100,000 miles. It’s not even covered in my owner’s hand book.
My XF 8 speed auto has done almost 190k, I brought it with 160k on it 5 years ago and I this hasn't been done (unless the 1st owner did and didn't keep a record). The gearbox is still very smooth though and no issues. I read the ecu adapts overtime to oil so you won't get issues until it's too late and it's better not to do this after too many miles as the ecu won't be able to adapt to the new oil. I wasn't sure if this was true or not, can you advise please?
Many thanks for your excellent, informative video. Since you guys have the proper machine to do a full gear oil change (not many places have this equipment, including Jaguar main dealer) do you offer this gear oil service to Jaguar owners ? and if you do what's the cost ?

Lincs Jag Specialist right next door to Rimmer Bros. Very knowledgeable chap by the name of Dave Dawson (wont rip you off either). He has done plenty of work for me, including a gearbox oil & filter change.
Hi there, the flow of the new oil pushes the dirty oil out into the flushing machine as it goes through the system. Therefore the dirty oil is flushed out before it goes back through the filter. Hope that makes sense.
Only if the vehicle has 50,000 miles or less. Preferably, this is a service you should do every 10-20k miles depending on your driving habits. If the vehicle is higher in mileage and you can't find any proof that the transmission fluid has been changed before then I wouldn't advise changing it. Doing so could cause slipping and or total transmission failure.
It is recommended that oils and filters are changed after 50,000 - 75,000 miles to ensure optimum performance. However if you need further guidance we would recommend you seek advice from a local garage that specialises in Jaguar Land Rover vehicles. I was told my car vibrations come from my transmission filter needed to be changed but I don’t wanna spend $300 on the filter if that isn’t actually the problem
Not sure how many miles you have. I would also check the engine mounts. I recently had my engine mounts replaced and the difference has been very noticeable with regards to vibration. I had my transmission service with new fluid and filter as well. I haven’t heard this causing vibrations. I would recommend changing Transmission fluid, pan & filter at 60k miles.
ive got a droning and vibration at 60 to 70 could bad oil and poor service be a cause of this?. car has done 130k bought it as a run about but have fallen in love with the old girl.
A vibration at speed can have a few causes but it is unlikely to be from old gearbox fluid. We would advise you to get this checked out from a local garage that deals with Jaguar Land Rover vehicles. I was told by a Jaguar dealer you never change the gearbox oil unless something goes wrong with the gearbox, also the timing belt gets change every 240,000 kilometres or 150,000 miles and the back div is sealed, so need to bother with that.

I have a 2015 xf and I haven’t had any issues with the gear box but I have 80k on it. Is there something I should look for before I get it done? Or should I get it done considering the mileag e
We see fluid changes as a preventative measure to ensure a longer life. It is entirely up to you, if it is running smoothly as it is you may wish to leave it until you start to notice changes in the performance of your gearbox such as harsher gear changes. Next time it has a service you could ask your garage about the gearbox fluid to see if they would recommend it based off any contaminants in the fluid.
Always a contentious point this, but my understanding is that on the 6-speed box the recommended change is at 150,000 miles or 10 years for the US, but elsewhere, officially the manual says "sealed for life". I've never heard of a recommended gearbox oil change on any car of less than 100,000 miles.
@@gssf.gr29 I did it just to be safe. I did coolant flush, gear box fluid , and oil change Befor winter and it costed me 850 altogether where I went as they’re like the top euro automotive company where I’m from. Im at 82k and I did it just to be safe
I love these cars and the XKs but it would of been nice if jaguar/zf had just put a gear box dip stick and filling port somehwere handy in the engine bay, where they put actually put the filling port it seems like they down want you to service these gearboxes yourself - the usual excuses from them - the system is sealed for life/death.
@@KKTR3 Hi David, if you are just wanting to change the fluid yourself, you can do a simple drain, drop the sump, replace the sump and refill. This procedure will only replace the amount of fluid in your sump. All you would need to purchase for this is the fluid and the sump itself as it houses the filter.
