Interesting video. I had a P6 2000TC with the manual choke and it was fine. I also know of at least three guys with XJs who had no issues with the AED units. I think a lot of people try to adjust the units too much in one go. I don't have a problem with carbs generally but, you have to love modern injection systems!

Wow glad my XJ6 came with Stromberg (pardon spelling), Don't remember my 1963 XKE which had SU carbs came with AED. If I remember it had a manual choke.

An XK120 I had had something similar as standard equipment. There was an electric third starting carburator that was controlled by a bimetallic strip that shut it off after the engine got hot. It didn't work all the time so most users wired it through a switch they installed on the dashboard an used it as an electric choke.

I ran an XJ6C in the 90s. I could never get the AED to work properly and ended up fitting a manual conversion with cams replacing the bimetal springs. I wish this information was available back then. I am sure I could have got it working in its original form. Looking back I wonder if there was a large leak in the hot air piping and it didn’t get hot enough. A lovely car. A big mistake to sell it.

very interesting. new sub here so haven't seen all the vids yet, but gotta say that that is one beautiful engine...polished carbs, ribbed valve covers, super clean and tidy. a pleasure to look at! Prob a combination of your work and Jag attention to detail

An instructive video. Nice. One thing I noticed missing on the engine is the hot air ducting that runs from the top of the exhaust manifold heat shield to the air filter box. This device speeds up engine warm-up time and cold running. The only down side is that it acts as an echo chamber for engine noise, especially tappet noise.

I have just gotten all new parts for the hot air pick up and I’ll be installing it shortly. It’s a great device that gives an even temperature for the carbs

We have a 66 s-type like yours. Is there something similiar on its carbs. We have a lot of problems starting and the plugs seem to foul very quickly. Looking forward to more s-type vids.

Interesting to see how these actually work. A previous owner removed mine and added a home made manual choke which works really well. I have no intention to go back to an AED as what I have is working. As I live in the northern part of New Zealand we don’t experience the cold weather that you have in Sweden and cold starting is not something we know much about! Also I have a stainless steel exhaust manifold so I’m not sure how the hot air system would work with that, perhaps that’s why the AED was removed?

My '52 XK120 has a thermo carb similar to this. Am still trying to get the idle to smooth completely out without excessive richness. The Brits should have made the SU carb with an idle circuit, would have eliminated idling headaches. It is an otherwise good carb.

Hi Adam, Thank you for posting an interesting video. In one of your previous videos you replaced the fuel injector hoses on your V12. It set me thinking about replacing the fuel rail inlet and outlet hoses on my 90 XJ40. These hoses have pulse dampers fitted. My problem is, I can source the return hose but not the feed hose, it is just not available. I wonder if you would know wether the pulse dampers are of the same value for both feed and return hoses. My plan would be to buy a return hose, which is readily available and utilise the damper and end connector from that and together with some new fuel line, make a new inlet feed hose. I think this will be a problem for a lot of 40s owners going forward. PS I have the same rotten cold.😣

Thank you so much for the videos on this subject! I've just bought a similar Jag (XJ6 4.2 1978) and the car stopped starting after a few rides. When it did, it took many cranks before starting, so that the battery is almost dead now. I guess I will have to learn myself how to fix the AED, as no mechanic around here (I live in Bucharest, Romania) seems to have any idea about it. People told me I should step on the throttle every time I switch the key on. How do you do it when you have a cold start, like the one you posted in this video? Do you step on the throttle at all or this should be avoided as it definitely floods the engine? Please, advise!

Hello Adam. If it's not too much trouble could you measure how far the needle lift screw is down in the housing on the Aed. I stupidly moved mine and can't seem to get it set back rite. The car was taking throttle fine now she won't take throttle at all...just spluttering and backfiring. Really appreciate if you could help a fellow jag nut out lol. My car is a 1977 Daimler sovereign 4.2

It sounds as though a thermal display would be helpful dealing with this device. (Remote thermometer or IR display.)
