Gary continues his recommission of the Jaguar XJS V12, including replacing the anti roll bar bushes, the fuel filter and the headliner. He then goes to visit his friend and neighbour, ex-Liverpool FC striker John Aldridge to compare his XJS with John's XK8 and talk all things football.

Hi Chris here from Hampshire. I met John Aldridge when he was manager of Tranmere. They were playing Southampton in the Cup and his team trained at Fareham Town FC on the Friday. I was Chairman at the time . Mark Chamberlain our Team manager set up the deal. They trained in the rain and my groundsman was not impressed as we had a home game on the Saturday. They drew with Southampton on the Saturday. Great bloke. Great video. Thanks

I liked the XJS, But as soon as it first came out I LOVED the XK. I Still think it looks better than the cars that have followed it. Really sweet lines, looks like it's moving, even when it's stood still. I read an article about how it was designed, and, just for once they consulted the production line workers about what might help THEM put it together. Simple things, a slight redesign of the boot space to allow somebody to get in it to fit things with out having to be a contortionist! It took HALF the man hours to build over the XJS.

Have just found your channel, Gary and am really enjoying the content! I’ve gone back to the very first video and working my way through them all. I really admire your attention to detail and your boundless patience, but that no doubt is fuelled by your obvious love for these old classics. I’ve watched the edition where you do the hood on the Rolls - amazing! Incredible and fastidious working-out of how the whole thing came together from the remnants of the old one. Tremendous! Good luck with the channel and keep the videos coming.

Ah, the memories. I once had a 2002 XKR - it was my dream car, eer since it came out in 1996. It had it's foibles but I loved it and it made me smile eerytime I drove it. Even now, it is still a great looking car. I totally get when John Alridge is coming from. I'd still like to own an XJS at some point. Thanks for sharing.

🙂 Another interesting video. I myself looked at buying one of these modern classic vehicles, afew years ago. But every example I viewed, had been both abused and neglected sadly 😥. So I ended up purchasing a 1995 Bentley Brooklands, in immaculate condition instead from a classic car 🚗 collector. It runs beautifully.....

I have done lots of headliners in the XJS. For ease of repair you got me there with the new replacements but for sound deadening the original material wins hands down. I will keep re-upholstering the original headliners as the fiber glass replacements are almost impossible to get in the US. Sometimes I wish I was still living in the UK as XJS parts are so much cheaper and easier to get in the UK than in the US! P.S. My ex wife had a mad crush on you back in the day and watched every episode of Peak Practice! 😀

In to your response on Trevor Francis, as I said 1st million pound footballer. He got paid that sum of money to join Nottingham Forest FC, under the managerial guide of Brian Clough and was shown to the press on the 9th Feb 1979. His nickname at BCFC was 'Ol' big 'ead'. Hope this trips the ol' blamange into remembering it as a few papers said it was too much for a player. Loving the series, doing any Italian sports cars in the future. You were my late mother's crush in your medical drama Peak Practice, she never missed a program. Take care and be safe out there under the cars. 😀 _=|

I used to own a 1997 XK8. I did not like the styling; the XJ-S is iconic, the XK8 just can’t compare. Brilliant to drive!! Interior was amazing. It just never worked; every time I drove it something failed or broke. Sold it after 3 years. Only car more unreliable I’ve ever owned was a 1974 Jensen Healey. I had that for 12 years and finally lost it to rust

There was ABSOLUTELY NO WAY you could repair that headliner, one of the common problems on classics is RUST, it NEVER sleeps!! As good as the XJS V12 is, they are COMPLEX to work on, i prefer the shape of early E types.

In some ways the XJS based Aston Martin DB7 is more closely related to the XJS than the XK8, being available with a "proper" Jaguar engine in the form of the supercharged AJ6. It was in 1989 that Ford bought Jaguar and the V8 of the XK8 is built by a Jaguar plant within Ford's Bridgend plant.
@ivanfernyhough3851

The xk8 is a proper jaguar engine,british designed with nothing in common with the fird v8s.people seem to think jaguar just took a ford v8,they didnt.

John has saloon plastic cam covers fitted , the upright "Jaguar" script are off the x300 V8 saloon , the correct xk8 covers should have the sloping script - there are 3 variants- Upright , sloping and Daimler. like John i was a toolmaker and made the tooling for these covers. Ps does he know the xk8 dash design is based on the inverted shape of the Spitfire wing. Great videos Gary , very enjoyable to watch, thanks.

I have that petrol smell in the boot, and I can't get rid of it no matter what I do, new filter, fuel hoses and so on. I think I'll have to pull the tank in the winter and have it tested. I've just found the overflow bottle for the rad as well. Mine was disconnected for some reason, getting at it was one of those occasions were you would have liked to have wrung the car designers neck!! Cheers from Wallasey.
@dhdove
@dhdove Год назад
Hey John, fuel smell in the XJS boot is a common problem. The tank sits on a thick rubber mat, condensation from the air in the boot forms between the cold fuel tank and the mat and eventually rots it into pinholes, the fuel then soaks into the rubber so the smell lingers. Good luck removing the tank you’ll find it’s a very tight fit. Whilst you’re at it remove the “swirl pot” that the tank feeds into ( below the battery), you’ll probably find it full of particles of rust which leads to another XJS complaint, grinding unexpectedly to a halt due to fuel starvation. The rusty gunge blocks the very fine filter in the pot and you stop. When the engine stops drawing fuel it falls away and you go again and so on and so on…..a good clean out should cure it, for a while. Good luck! TonyS

@@classic.obsession thanks Gary, I thought it was so. And of course, the link with your XJS is that it was developed from that platform so unbroken lineage which is always nice. When I lived in British Columbia I had a friend who is also an actor and she had the convertible version in dark green. I went for many a ride in that one, your right, it was a softer ride and I loved the dash on it. There is a chap where I live now, just outside of Vienna who has the coupe in silver but I much prefer this gold colour, it really shows off the lines well.

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars, trucks including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing petrol stations to only one state operated central gas station per city. From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.
