When Gary Grimm had a massive heart attack, the inmates he was guarding broke out of their holding cell to help him. His eyes still well up each time he thinks about it.

So very true, I worked in my local jails for 20 years, the last seven in the Psych unit. We had an inmate named George, a big 300lb guy. If he was upset I knew something was up, I would go and talk to him during the security walk discovering another officer on day shift mistreated them, kicking their doors as they slept. George was going off, I talked to him and asked him what was going on, why are there black boot marks on my doors. The day shift officer had kicked all 36 doors thinking he was some big shot. My shift commander came in on a post check and asked me about the marks, I told him who I suspected that caused them. The Lt went to his office to view the video tape for who might have done it. Then he called the escort to relieve me and asked me to report to his office. He stated you are not in trouble, have seat and watch the video, it was who I thought, the Lt ordered me Not to clean the doors or have any trustees clean them. The next day the scumbag officer was busy scrubbing each door to perfection, the next day George said, Damn Officer Miller you did not play around, the officer was written up and then later fired from his job. I had recommended to my Lieutenant to fire him for his stupid actions, and he had to apologize to each inmate as well.. We were very happy after he was fired!!!

There are plenty of inmates like this. I worked in a prison for nearly ten years and saw both the worst of humanity and the best. Most of them are decent guys who have made an error in judgement or were having a bad day and lashed out. They're not bad people (in most cases). A small gesture such as an inmate seeking me out to apologise for ignoring me when I had greeted him good morning earlier that day, is a good measure of someone's true character.

man gr As a former correctional officer , I always treated the inmates I was supervising with the same decency and respect I wanted. I would receive a lot of flack for it from other officers, but I just kept doing what I was. Even my Captain told me I was one in few that didn’t take my authority to the head. I gave what I got. I only called them by their last name or sir depending on if I knew their name. I had an officer tell me that calling a inmate sir I was giving him power over me. I told him I was giving him the same respect that was given to me. Never had an issue on the compound and respected by inmates that could have been my grandfather or dad.

Odell Mateo More likely they’re in on drug possession charges, which makes up nearly 30% of US jail figures. Please stop spreading misinformation about rape accusations. Already, rape investigation procedures are hugely invasive on the victim/accuser’s part, with medical examinations, rigorous questioning and the invasion of their privacy (phone data, etc). Already reporting figures are low because there’s widespread fear among victims and discomfort reporting it. The numbers that actually get convicted are shockingly low, something like 1-2%. Rape is one of the cruellest crimes you can commit and it can have lifelong physical and psychological effects. Yes, as with all crimes, false reports can be made. But those are extremely rare and the chances of them reaching conviction without evidence is near impossible.

There are many places in jails and prisons that are a bit less secure, although the door wasn't exactly easy for them to open.
