When Deaf people are arrested and taken to prison, more often than not, the police and prison system do not provide interpreters to facilitate communication and ensure that they understand why they are being arrested and what their rights are. Ruthie explains the ordeal she endured after being arrested and jailed without communication access, and the lawsuit she ended up filing against two prison systems. If and when a Deaf person files suit for systemic discrimination, it can be a good idea to demand that the settlement cover the cost of any future counseling services needed to treat PTSD symptoms.
