This movie and more importantly, the life of Jaime Escalante are magnificent. I had the pleasure and honor of spending 4 days at a retreat in Traverse City, Michigan with Professor Escalante a number of years ago. As a professor of education myself, I cannot begin to tell you just how much I learned from this remarkable man!
I so loved the movie that for decades I wanted to take Calculus This semester I finished Calculus 1, with an A. The music and themes of "Stand & Deliver" are in my heart always.
My parents are Bolivian I was born here... and I always tell people that he isn’t only an example for the Bolivian community in the United States but also an example for the spanish community as a whole... with ganas you can accomplish everything.... Always love hearing success stories within our Bolivian community... he isn’t just a success story of himself but he contributed in the rise in the level of education of Latinos... his students are his success story
To a Gentlemen of distinction and dignity. Brilliance and heart. If we all could have been touched by this great man. Rest In Peace good Sir. Our country lost a fantastic Citizen.
@@felixllanas4534 Heck yeah! I love how he was solely responsible for introducing Israel "Cachao" Lopez to the new generation of the coolest "World Music" listeners in the late 90's and beyond.
You only remember the Bad Teachers the most feared and unjust. THEN.... There is the last thought.. The One about "THE ONE" We all have the "ONE WE MISS". Those ladies and gentlemen are the real HEROS. I Have one. Alex. He had a bad go after Graduation. I Think about his wisdom and mastery of Language ( vocal delivery and Silent acting to make us get it) God Bless the Good ONES. All of them. Thank you to all the ones who never get this credit.
Because of Mr. Escalante, I made sure my kids got the best possible education. My kids graduated from Santa Cruz university, UCI down in Irvine, Berkeley and MIT..Échale ganas mijo. Kaknamal Mr Escalante ,alguacil jaub,,,,(my old tenek language.)
¿O me equivoco? No fue en Santa Cruz.
I feel proud of being latin thanks to latins like Jaime Escalante. Corrección en el nombre de este gran señor. Disculpen fue el maldito corrector que me cambió el nombre, y ni cuenta me di.
I was never had the opportunity to be his student, but I was thought by two of his students , thanks to them I became an engineer. The seed that he planted help so many students achieve their dreams I remember one thing I was told " If I can do it, you can do it" always with GANAS.
Edward James Olmos is an amazing actor however he does a strong Mexican accent in the movie, but Jaime Escalante is actually from Bolivia; very different accents. Unless the teacher in real life was just imitating the Mexican accent to catch the attention of the Mexican American students.
@_OBK_ I have a few questions! 1: Where or how the United States government got the name AMERICA from? 2: What happened first? The United States of America or the American Continent? 3: What government and it's Geographers added the North, the Central and the South to the American Continent?
I had one math teacher like that in high school. I had bath math anxiety back in the day and for some reason I felt really comfortable in his class getting 90s on his exams.
God bless his soul. When I get to heaven, I want to learn Calculus from him. I'm sure he can teach me Geometry too, a class I wasn't paying attention too. If not now that I learn, in the afterlife.
MY RESPECTS FOR HIM. BUT HE MISS SOMETHING. SAYING "WHEN HE GOT TO AMERICA". HE NEVER LIFT AMERICA. BECAUSE AMERICA IS NOT A COUNTRY AMERICA ITS A CONTINENT/S
You'll always have fools in so called comedy trying to rate down the efforts of men. Thing is, good folk will always be there. Until Someone says That's Enough!
Uhhhh....mathematics is NOT easy for everyone. Maybe if I had a teacher like him! But I am not good with numbers....better with letters....and definitely don't understand when the letters and the numbers are all shoved together.
Almost nobody is good at throwing a baseball or shooting a basketball either. Some GET good because they like doing it so much that they do it a lot. Others can be good if they commit to such things whether or not they like it. A good teacher can spark a students interest or at least foster a will to apply effort. Mental activities are similar to muscular coordination and strength. It's not nearly so much that math is easy for some and hard for others. That's mostly false crap. The Einstein's of the world are not your basic college level math students getting good grades. The public school set up has not helped much for sure. Students should be in classes based on ability at any given time, Not based on their age or grade level per se. Passing kids on to higher levels when they can barely do basic math is like expecting varsity baseball team level performance from someone who barely knows the rules of the game or how to hold a bat. Body builders don't go from benching 80 pounds to 280 pounds in a month. It takes time and proficiency development at almost each level. Very little logic is taught or practiced in American society. Quite a lot of math is nothing more than logic puzzles. Bigger puzzles are made up of smaller puzzles, but most people can only learn how one new puzzle piece fits at a time. Throwing a student into a higher level math course where all the pieces are brand new does not work. That's not the student's fault, and it does not mean the person is not good at math. It means that the smaller math "muscles" have not been developed, that's all. I was not a good student. I rarely did any homework, but I only got behind on math in the last 2 years of HS. I was ahead before that because I had a hobby that exercised a lot of math essential brain cells. I played board games. Strategy games and money games and I played them seriously, to win, not just as a mindless thing to use as a social get together excuse (those people are NOT board gamers). A slow train can climb a high mountain higher than El Capitan if the track is not too steep, but it takes time and effort. Not everyone needs to learn Calculus or quantum physics, but things like internediate algebra are useful in developing a person's ability to think. Same goes for reading and writing which most Americans are also horrible at, but tests for that are much more subjective so it's easier to slide by.
