2010 Texas State Flatpicking Champion Jake Workman Preliminary two songs. St. Anne's Reel & Old Joe Clark. Sponsored by Bay Area Bluegrass Association. Shot with a Canon S5.
Holy crap. That has to be the best version of St. Anne's Reel that I've heard. I'm stealing most of those licks for my straight forward, balls to the wall version that has serious accuracy issues. Nice job!
What I love about this style of playing is that it is not fast (or demanding) for the sake of sport but also looks out for a good tone and end result. Also in Germany st Anne's reel was adopted into a children song about 'grandma riding a motorbike in the chickencage'. Lol
the "Old Joe Clark" part reminiscent of Ian Dury & The Blockheads: "Sex & drugs & Rock & Roll", same hookline riff. Same riff by the way as Charlie Haden's bassline on Ornette Coleman's "Ramblin"
Hi Alex. Your comment is most interesting and informative for me. You are right about the Drop D. I agree he is playing standard but that drop D. gives a different sound.Thank you for sharing this. I appreciate it. Have a nice week end Look up DEE DEE pick's channel I thing you would like his playing of the guitar.. Marie
I'd like to talk to this "teacher." I bet he's one of those lunatics who tells you to "practice" too. Like that makes a difference? It's like, back off man, I'll practice when dad buys me a 1930s D-28.
WHAT ??? With a comparison like that, I dare say that you don't play. Combine the flare of an enthusiastic air-guitarist with a 20th percentile guitarist, and you have Billy Springs. I am not discrediting the value of showmanship or passion, but contest judges would not be so easily fooled.
I am glad that I didn't have to face him last year. I would have been slaughtered. Last year a Daniel Wheeler won and you talk about PLAYING A GUITAR!!! I only managed to get 4th, unfortunately. It was a nice guitar they were giving away, too. A Jeff Robertson custom made Adi top, forward shifted scalloped bracing and mahogany back and sides. She was a beaut!!!
Garrett Ratliff Are any of your videos on here? I'd be more than happy to listen to them. I love listening to flat pickers. I especially like this guy, because for some reason his playing picks me up when I'm feeling down.
If they could play like this in regular tuning that would be something else again. Never the less I do enjoy different tuning and find that some music goes better in different tuning.
Look up my guitar arrangements on my channel. Then tell me what you think. I find that I discover a lot of new ways to play a piece just by practicing. Thanks for your comment and suggestion. I will try to upload more. Your friend, Marie
What do you mean by "in regular tuning" He is either Standard tuning or maybe Drop D and I only mean single Drop D as in DAGBDE, this is by the rules of the competition itself. So other than having a slightly (1 whole step) deeper range on a single string, he's playing it standard.

its impressive but after a minute of watching and listening i move on like "yup thats what he's going to keep doing for the new few minutes". a music i'd prefer to listen to while doing stuff.
I love the music but it’s true and we should all be cognizant of that. This style is mostly 16th notes and it sounds fantastic when done properly. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves and pretend it’s something it’s not. There’s other music for that. In fact there’s music for everything whether you want to be deeply immersed or simply entertained. No one is above the other they thankfully exist just the same.
