Ingebrigtsen crushed El Guerrouj’s 2000M world record (WR) by over 1.5 seconds. He clobbered Komen’s 2 mile WR by more than 4 seconds, and this 2 mile WR equates to no worse than a 7:19 3000M - more than 1.5 seconds below Komen’s current WR. He’s significantly better as the distance gets longer. 1500M is definitely not his best distance. It’s his most vulnerable distance, as he struggles to close the last 300M in less than 40 seconds and last 400M in less than 53 seconds in a solidly run race. (To me these are blatantly obvious statements). He doesn’t have the natural leg speed of a great 1500M runner like Coe (but better over 800M, not 1500M), Cram, Ngeny (still holds 1000M WR), El Guerrouj (still holds 1500M WR) and several other greats of the past. When El Guerrouj broke the 1500M WR he closed the last 300M in under 40 seconds. In my opinion Ingebrigtsen’s a more dominant 5000M runner than Farah ever was (may do the same for 10000M later on in his career), as he would have ground Farah into the track over the last 3 to 4 laps every time, so Farah’s big kick would have been completely neutralised. He may have won the 1500M if he’d executed his pre-race plan slightly better, by running the first 400M about a second slower then cranked up the pace each lap thereafter, so having the better kickers under pressure from a long way out. I’m sure he’ll learn from that. With his superior endurance and strength I can’t see the current 5000M world record being around that much longer, if he decides to go for it, as well as the current 3000M WR (which he should utterly destroy). The 1500M WR will be harder for him, but definitely possible if he remains injury-free and healthy.
I think Jakob was going for the 1500m world record at the Olympics. His usual strategy has him hanging back to conserve energy for the first lap of the 1500. I think he got lactic acid fatigue from his faster than normal start. This resulted in him having no kick left for the closing 200m. At a diamond league meeting, he ran 3:26xx which is very close to El Guerrouj. His 5000 m PB of 12:48 is not very close to the record of 12:35. Although I agree that he could take down that 5000m record with focus, I also believe he can get it right to go under 3:26.00 because he ran 3:26.73 this year.
It is quite rude not even considering his previous results. He ran 327 multiple times, he is the only guy on the field to ever run 326, and you try to imply that he is fading in 1500m? Bro it is Jakob's favourite event. He would not give up untill he gets his double.
If the 3000 meters had been included in the Olympics, Jakob would always be on the podium (since 2021 Olympics, considering he matured at around 20 yrs of age), whatever be the colour of the medal.
Not really, Jakob is the best 5K man in the world. He could be the greatest 5/10K man in history if he pursued it. Jakob won’t win another global championship 1500M the rest of his career.
Jakob 1500m speed is the reason he keeps winning the 5000m championship titles. He gapped a world class field by 12-15 metres. If you race a lot of 1500m you will know that the pace feels so slow until 8 laps and you then you have the speed to run significantly faster in the closing stages compared to starting with 5000m and upwards. If he drops 1500m no amount of training will help with that kick like running sub 3:27. It is just wasn't his day that day owing to poor execution of race plan. He is only 23 and he already was an Olympic champion in 1500m and 2 x world silver medalist, he will bounce back. In top 6 finishes in 1500m men's final, 5 of them set big PBs and national record, Jakob is the only person who didn't even get a season's best. He should drop the milage enough to allow his body train for speed endurance and take down the field in Tokyo WC next year.
Honestly, people don’t like him because they perceive him as arrogant, but I think he’s just confident and has no filter re discussing his own talent. And he runs hard all the way! It’s insane.
And he's just selling the races, how many people pay attention to the 1500 because of the Ingebrigtsen - Kerr rivalry? He has the right to say he's the best in the world when, well, he is - I think he ought to move up soon but his 1500 times are still improving - it'll be interesting to see how his next few years play out
He went up a notch in my book. After leading the field all the way on pole position, he did not have to open up the gap for H oeker to come through on the inside. This great show of sportsmanship possibly cost him🎉 missing out on a medal.
The 1500 is just to hard to front run. He needs to get the world record in the 15 and the mile, then move up full time to the 5 and 10 where he is Kingebrigtsen

Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s victory in the 2024 Olympic 5000 meters in Paris filled me with an overwhelming sense of elation, heightened by the emotional rollercoaster of the previous days. Just a few days before, Jakob had faced a bitter disappointment in the 1500 meters, where he had been narrowly edged out for the championship. That loss was a stunning moment, a rare setback for a runner of his caliber, and it left many wondering how he would bounce back. But true to his indomitable spirit, Jakob’s response was nothing short of extraordinary. Watching him return to the track for the 5000 meters, I could feel the tension in the air, a mix of anticipation and hope. There was a sense that this race wasn’t just about winning; it was about redemption, about proving that even in the face of adversity, Jakob could rise to the occasion. The weight of expectation was immense, and yet, as he lined up at the start, his demeanor was one of calm focus, his eyes set on the distance ahead, undeterred by the recent disappointment. The race itself was a masterclass in resilience. From the very beginning, Jakob positioned himself strategically, conserving energy, and staying with the lead pack. Each lap was a test of patience and mental strength, and I could feel my heart racing in sync with his. The memory of the 1500 meters loss lingered, making every move he made seem all the more significant. It was as if he was carrying the hopes of everyone who had watched him falter, determined to turn those hopes into reality. When the race reached its critical juncture, Jakob made his move with a sudden burst of speed that took my breath away. It was a bold, decisive moment that signaled his intent to seize the gold, to rewrite the narrative that had begun just days earlier. The crowd erupted as he surged to the front, and I could feel the intensity of the moment as if I were there on the track with him. This wasn’t just a race; it was a battle, a fight to reclaim his place as the best. In those final moments, as Jakob powered towards the finish line, every emotion came flooding back-the disappointment of the 1500 meters, the uncertainty, the doubt. But all of it melted away as he crossed the line, victorious and triumphant. The sheer joy on his face was mirrored by the roar of the crowd, a cathartic release of all the pent-up emotions from the past few days. Jakob had done it; he had come back from defeat to claim the gold with the heart of a champion. Reflecting on this victory, I am filled with a deep sense of admiration for Jakob’s resilience. His ability to overcome the heartbreak of the 1500 meters and channel that into a stunning 5000 meters win is a testament to his character and his unrelenting pursuit of greatness. This wasn’t just a victory; it was a story of redemption, a reminder that setbacks are not the end but can be the fuel for even greater achievements. Jakob Ingebrigtsen’s triumph in the 5000 meters at the 2024 Olympics is a moment I will cherish forever. It was more than just a race; it was a display of the power of perseverance, of turning adversity into triumph. As I revel in his success, I am reminded that true champions are not only defined by their victories but by how they rise after they fall. Today, I am elated, not just for the win, but for the incredible journey that led to it.

Thanks you very much and please continue to show us poor mortals what is possible via the records that Jacob will continue to establish that will be unbroken just because that is what he does. It is embarrassing but you have unleash the spring of enlightenment within. Now, I can see all of humanity harmonizing to achieve the impossible such as erasing poverty and sickness and self doubt. It is quite remarkable to say the least. Thanks
Such unexpected outcomes ! I thought Jacob would win the 1500 M with a world record & silence detractors like Kerr . Then some kind of devine intervention enabled his victory in a slow 5,000 M . Cheptegei didn't participate , Gebrehiwet faded , and where was Kejelcha ? All of the latter capable of a sub 12:40 5,000 M . Has Jacob ever gotten below 12:48 ? The situation invites wonderment & more discussion !
People say his best race is 5K, however he's the closest man alive to besting the 1.5K world record. (Assuming he not the ome setting pace in front the entire race 💀) He probably gonna try to Beat 1.5K world record first before shifting to 5k
This is Jakobs event destroying the East Africans and reigning 5000 meter world champion and Olympic champion. I believe with his speed, and mental toughness he can take down the records of Joshua Cheptegei very soon.
Jacob has a strong internal motivation, he wants to be the fastest runner he can be. He cares more about the total time, rather then winning (although he enjoy winning as well). And when he does not perform at his best, he is honest about it and blames himself. When he lost the 1500 WC to Kerr last year, and referred to Kerr as "just the next guy" this is just an expression of his internal motivation and what really matters to Jacob: How he did in the race, his time and not his competitors. Kerr however got upset and demanded respect as the new champion, that is external motivation. For somebody how is externally motivated, your internal motivation can make you seem arrogant. The internal motivated just has a stronger mentality. Even though Jacob has not won the last championships on the 1500 due to being out sprinted at the end, his goal remains the same. He will probably continue with this until he beats the world record at the 1500.
I would say his sweet spot is 2000-3600m but there’s no events for that His kick though is too strong for the 5K runners but not strong enough for the 1500 meters

Hocker ended way behind Jacob on 1500 meter 3 years ago in Tokyo Olympics. Jacob started way too early this time and made it easier for the ones who are better ar sprinting. He is still a 1500 meter contender. Edit: i rest my case.
For sure, he misjudged his condition. The 1500m was a slow paced run and I'm assuming he chose to move up in front so that he didn't put himself in the position where he had to overtake the other runners that also had fresh legs for a high finishing pace. In the end he just used up too much energy too early. A failed tactical choice that he rectified in the 5000m.
Not 3,51on the last milbut onthe last 1600m,4 laps,so he had a little over 1,52 for the last mile, but he also had a last 800m at 1,50,and a last lap at 53,27,and that is faster than the last lap for the world record at the 1500 m which was 53,5, the end of his 5k was really absurd, and that was unpressed, and after the hard 1500 m,a trial at the 5 k after only 16 hours after the 1500 final, and the final at the 5 k,only 4 days after the same hard 1500 m,I dont think Hocker or Kerr could have manage d that.
Jakob has been focusing on the 1500 primarily because that's the Ingebrigtsen "family distance", but also because he wants to break the world record while he's still young enough to have the speed for it. His endgame, as stated several times by himself, is to move to 5k/10k and eventually marathon.
Based on his last Instagram post it feels like he will start another 4-year cycle of 1500-5000m to reach LA2028 I assume that after that he will have a 4 year cycle of 5000-10000 and, by the age of 32, wil start running marathon. Would only give him one shot at olympics glory though but you gotta make choices aha
I think that despite the hate, jakob is very slept on. He is at heart a distance runner, yet everyone knows him as the toxic guy that keeps losing the 1500. I think that as he ages and goes up in distance, his marks will look even better.
@@trickydicky2908 No hate, merely observation, back in the day I used to train with some of those guys, (walker, Morecroft) so slightly better placed to comment.

Actually Beleke only was 1 time Worlds champion and 1 time Olympic Champion over 5000m. Title wise, Jakob is sort of already ahead, which is insane. He hasn't been close to the WR yet but truth is he hasn't tried. He could run 12.48 in 2020, I think he is capable of running 12.30+ nowadays but we'll have to wait to find out :)
He said in an interview that his best distance is the half marathon 😮 so as he ages, like Kipchoge, he’ll compete in the 5k, 10k and probably the marathon too at some point.
It's interesting that in the 1500m, Jakob needed to run away from the guys with better finishes, while in the 5000m, he was the guy with a great finish that others needed to run away from. I'm surprised that nobody tried to turn the 5000m into a fast race.
He would have won anyways. In a few weeks he will set a world record in the 3000. Next season he will run 3.24 in the 1500 and the years to come he will set world records and win 5000 and 10 000. When he is over 30 he will win the marathon

@@ancro2040 what you think about 1500m in Lausanne before Silesia? Will Jakob challenge 3:26:00 there or just use it to supercompensate before the 3000m a few days later?
Honestly I see zero reason for Jakob to move up from the 1500m in the near future. He clearly still desires more results at that distance including championship gold medals and the world record, and all while doing this he still wins the 5k every year?1? I'm not saying Jakob would have won as easily had Cheptegei run, but I firmly believe if Jakob focused on the 5k he would become so good at it that it might become dare I say boring for him(maybe this is a stretch or hyperbole). The 1500 leaves a lot to be desired for him, and I think that is what motivates him most at the moment.
@TotalRunningProductions. I have to disagree with you with respect to Jakob and the 1500. Ingebrigtsen is very talented, but he's very stubborn, too. I believe that he can out-kick any 1500m runner in the world, including Kerr. But in the last two World Championships and this Paris Olympics he's insisted on pressing hard and front-running early (with two or more laps to go). In all three races, he burned out his legs before the final sprint. Using different tactics, there a good chance he would have won all three races. He's determined to prove to himself that he can win in that way, though. He doesn't front-run early in the 5000, though. The result has been wins at all three events.
I agree, jakob might already be able to go for a Wrecord on 5 k, but he think 1500 is more fun. Remember he von a 12.48 race with the best athletes in the world as 20 year old before Tokyo Olympic. He told that he was his own worst enemy on 1500, and no one other to blame. He was in the best shape of his lifetime, and as a relativelig slow starter who can run like a watch he had lighter legs than expected and opened 1,5 secund faster than he had planned, and this made the start of the race all too tough, and destroyed the rest of race for him. But in my opinion the other guys got the best pacer they could dream of.

I think the timing for the last lap was tricked becauce Gebrehiveth was nearly one second ahead of Ingebrightsen in the passing for the last lap because he was boxed in then Gebrehiveth started his kick. The time we had on the watch was under 53 seconds even if he slowed down 5 meter before the finish line. This was a crazy race with 22 athletes in the final because 6 men got a place in the finale after they had falling in the qualification run. And everyone would like to be frontrunners. Everyone managed the to follow the pace until the last 4-5 laps in the hot evening. This race migth gone just below 13 minutes without the first 3 slow laps.
It is stupid and a knee jerk reaction to think Ingebrigtsen will not focus on the 1500m after Paris, given his age and he is still improving his times. He just ran 3:26:73 this year for god's sake. He has plenty of time to get even better at the 1500m and 5000m is just an additional event which he can win easily.
It’s amazing to see Jakob winning 5000 so handily … AND .. he could have won 1500 also .. had he not making tactical blunder on that race .. it was his race to lose in 1500 … but he took the lead almost immediately … really a bad decision … possibly trying to go for a record instead of winning the race … ran out of gas at the last 20 meters .. not even getting a medal … he could have won both races 5000 and 1500 … would have been a record not to be repeated again ever … but too bad .. still an amazing racer .. to be at both events
You have it wrong, all his training are for the longer distances,he run the 1500 m becauce its a family thing, both his older running brothers are europeans champions on that distance, and Jacob has run that distance since he was 12 years old,I think he at first wanted to be better than his brothers at that distance, and when he was better than them at 17,he wanted to be the world's best,in interview Jacob's older brother Henrik has told that Jacob's best distance is neither the 1500 m,nor the 5k,but actually the 10 k,and Jacob has said that may be his best distance is the half maraton, even if he has not run it yet,at least in copetition pace.
I’m gonna love the sound of silence among Ingebrigtsen-haters when he breaks the 1500 world record. Yes, there will be pacers (just like there were pacers when the current record was set). But my question is: Why won’t Kerr or any other runner be following him to the line? Easy answer: They can’t. They just can’t. They just lacks the capasity.
Zinga bricken and yard nuse... the closed captioning is hilarious 😂 Ingebrigsten showed up for the 5K. That is his race and belongs to no other man. Mmmkay.
I think Jakob's middle distance days are almost over. He doesn't have as good of a kick as the other runners to win a non-paced race. Ironically, I think he's more likely to get a world record in the 1500/mile than get any more world titles because in those events he's more strength based. However, since he has the world record potential in the 1500, he has the kick in the 5k to be considered a more speed-based runner there, which gives him world title potential there. If he really wants to get all the world records he says he could get, he should just accept that it's much harder to become world/olympic champion for him now with the stronger field and his lack of kick in the 1500 SPECIFICALLY and just show up for the paced 1500/mile meets while focusing on the longer distance events for the titles and eventually building his aerobic base for the world records there. I believe he can achieve greatness, but he needs to put his ego aside and accept that he probably won't kick and win the 1500 titles anymore. If he trains his kick more, then he'll lose out on some of his aerobic training. He can't win them all.
Great take. It’s definitely a lot more realistic for him to train his aerobic base than it is to try to improve his speed at this point, 5k is definitely the sweet spot for him and with the improved aerobic capacity he could probably still break the 1500m record in a paced setting anyway.
Put aside his ego? What ego? As a Norwegian I find this statement very weird. He doesn’t run the 1500 to feed his ego. Jakob runs it’s simply because his brothers ran it and he has ran it since he was 12. It’s his favourite distance, as he has stated in multiple interviews. Probably not the distance that fits his skillset the most, but he still loves running it.

Jakob will break the 1500m world record. Yes, the 5000 is the easiest for him to dominate in high profile races, but he’s only a fraction of a second away from setting the 1500m world record- he was chasing it in Paris, but fell short.
Half of Ethiopia has been and is currently at war since 2020. The country is still sending older runners like Hagos Gebrehiwot, who was on the track since the early 2000s. It's a shame Ethiopia couldn't even bring new runners who could repeat the history of Haile Gebresilase, Kenenisa Bekele, Seleshi Sehin, Meseret Defar, Tirunesh Dibaba, Gebzebe Dibaba, and much more before and after them in our well known events, aka 5000 and 10,000m. Let Jacob and others take the crowns while we're fighting each other here.
I was about to ask a little about Ethiopia, so sad to hear about the war. But the runners at the Olympics seems to be talented enough to get more medals. I think I saw three runners from Ethiopia infront of the field in most distance races - but there was not much medals (if any). Seems like they had their peak form in the early part of the season... (Did they have tough qualifications like USA to get to the Olympics?)
In hindsight with that phenomenal last lap in the 5000 if he had just sat in for the 1500 he would have gone close …silver at worst…( almost a case of do not try to win but run for a medal and you have more chance of a gold than front run at world record pace and set it up for the speed kickers)…..
