Jakub (or Jakob) Schikaneder (February 27, 1855 in Prague - November 15, 1924 in Prague) was a Bohemian painter.
Schikaneder came from the family of a German customs office clerk. Despite the family's poor background, he was able to pursue his studies, thanks in part to his family's love of art; an ancestor was Urban Schikaneder, the elder brother of the librettist Emanuel Schikaneder. After having completed his studies in Prague and Munich (1871-1879), Schikaneder, alongside Emanuel Krescenc Liška, was involved in the furnishing of the royal box in the National Theatre in Prague; however, this work was lost in a fire in 1881. After his work in the National Theatre, Schikaneder travelled through Europe, visiting Germany, England, Scotland, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy and France. From 1891 until 1923 he taught in Prague's Art College. Schikaneder counted amongst those who admired the Munich School of the end of the 19th century.
He died in 1924 and was buried in Vinohrady Cemetery in Prague.
Schikaneder is known for his soft paintings of the outdoors, often lonely in mood. His paintings often feature poor and outcast figures. Other motifs favoured by Schikaneder were autumn and winter, corners and alleyways in the city of Prague and the banks of the Vltava - often in the early evening light, or cloaked in mist. His first well-known work was the monumental painting Repentance of the Lollards (2.5m × 4m, lost). The National Gallery in Prague held an exhibition of his paintings from May 1998 until January 1999.

I'm 17, live in Slovakia and I just have to thank you for presenting me these amazing painters that live/were living in Slovakia or nearby. I didn't know we have/had painters, whose art was this interesting and beautiful. Especially Jakub Schikaneder's paintings are haunting and atmospheric and I adore them. So I owe you a big "Thank You".... btw great choice of music :)

The atmosphere of melancholy or loneliness, with the autumnal or wintery imagery,is paired beautifully with the music.

Mil Gracias !!

I am not educated in art, so I have just come upon Schikaneder by chance. I am impressed at how masterfully he conjures atmosphere to envelop the viewer. If these paintings are, as I suppose, representative of his body of work, then clearly he was preoccupied by isolation, alienation and finality. The lone figures, the end of day, the end of life, the fading of light, the descending curtain of mist are all recurrent. The human subjects in his paintings tend to face away from the viewer in loneliness, their backs turned and shoulders hunched, their unseen gaze downward one. I think I'll watch a Woody Woodpecker cartoon now.

He knew very well how to capture those moments of sadness and being tired after a long day of work or of taking care of someone sick.

Thank you for this. I came here from Basinski's music, and think I may have found my new favourite artist. I wanted to research Jakub more but couldn't bring myself to leave.
