This was one of those surf trips when you get in the car looking for waves because everywhere else is basically flat, "Jalama Beach County Park" pulls through for us on this one!
I was not really planning on video taping this, but when we pulled up even at a semi late time approx 8:15 a.m.and saw that straight offshore wind, it sure did make it look awesome out there for the camera.
My friend and I take turns video taping each other hopefully scoring that miracle tube ride during our 1 hour sessions a piece, he got first go out.
When I went out approx 10:45a.m.during that mid Sept morning the wind started blowing from offshore ENE to straight onshore W.
An interesting section of this video shows the wind still offshore along the beach and near shore, with the waves still spraying mist out to see.
If you watch at starting approx 6:29 you can see the onshore wind approaching out at sea along the horizon line slowly moving in to shore with the white caps getting closer.
Once it blew out a little, the wind equalized and it was still a nice day, but the swell did drop mostly from not being held up by the blowing offshores.
You can see this at my opener segment after our surfing showing me standing up top on the hill pointing back at beach and campground, the waves really decreased, but it still turned out to be a nice day on the way out at about 12:30p.m.
This place can get very stormy winter and for sure windy past mid morning on most days, so fair weather can really make a difference in wave quality, and actually enjoying your stay, fog can also form suddenly!
Wind surfing is popular here for the hardcores that can take that very chilly stiff breezes and most times year round very chilly waters.
This day the water temp was about 56 and the air temp topped out briefly 70 degrees with bright sunshine, which is very good for this weather prone and exposed area!
I played some acoustic guitar of my own music during the slide show portion of this video starting approx 7:20
I will be making some more updates possibly to this description, also adding "CC Closed Caption" during the video with all the weather and surf details, best time of year, swell directions, water temps, air temps etc etc.

Home. Learned to surf here backside. Exquisite Lefts & Rights from Tarantulas to the store. Spent 7 years surfing here with my two best friends between 1975 and 1982. During the fantastic Summer and Fall swells many happy memories. and, there was always swell here even when flat any where else. Surfing early off shore mornings. Then head back down to the for a Jalama burger. Maybe play some horse shoes and drink some beers and play acoustic guitars. Then back down to Tarantulas and a long snooze in the sun when it was blowing. Then the afternoon sessions into some epic evening surf. On Full moons we would surf late into the evening. The sunsets we're great. My days off we're Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, so we usually had uncrowded and really beautiful surf nearly to our selves. It was Paradise, like a long beautiful movie I play back in my mind when I want to leave this world behind. My two best friends are gone now. So, this place Jalama Beach is a very special place to me. And, I thank you for your video and the very well done music, perfect.

First went there with some Santa Barbara surfers on 4th of July weekend 1968. We named the episode "The Day Rights and Lefts" came to Jalama. A reference to the iconic reef break on the Hollister Ranch. We were stoked reading Surfer Magazine article "Were Tops Now" about Bob McTavish and Nat Young surfing Rights and Lefts as they were living in Santa Barbara at the time. First shortboards. Single fins. No legropes or flash wetsuits yet. We were the only surfers there that long weekend. Only fishermen on the beach and in the campground. Watched a cowboy beat the shit out of a hippie on the beach though. Kind of wrecked it for me. I still have a picture of us taken in front of my VW van with a pop top. I was all of 17 years old.

Jalama breaks on any swell but is biggest in the winter. When summer was completely flat, we would drive three hours to jalama to get 3 to five feet waves, glassy til 2 oclock. Heavy sharks in the summer at point conception.

HENRY!!!! How are you!? I just found a message from you in the old messaging system and wrote you back! I am SO excited to see this video! I am originally from Santa Barbara, CA and with my Grandparents living in Lompoc I swam at Jalama Beach all the time!!!! There are SO many WONDERFUL memories here!!!!! I am saving this in a special playlist to go back and watch again of special places I love that I find videos about! I live near NYC, though still near the beach lol, and don't get back very often so these are a wonderful treat to get to see home and places I know so well and have such happy memories there with family! Living in central Ontario, didn't have much opportunities to learn to surf, but the draw was always there, now when we visit Costa Rica I can't wait to hit the waves. Beautiful breaks there, here to add support to a fellow creator1165

Have a great time in Costa Rica, remember there are natural hazards in those tropical places that can look so awesome- Even Mr. Mosquito can be a risk, and lots of other creators in the water as well! I just mention this because you most likely don't have those kinds of things in Canada? Have a great time though, and thanks for stopping by!

What usually means not soon, but I will try to get on it in a few days I think?- Details will mostly be in the " CC Closed Caption" With a general description below in the box. Basically fair weather and good size swell and this place rocks! Dawn patroler for sure, can easily blow out after 9:am approx This day here was below average swell with good weather...

Why surf the creek mouth in front of the camp? Itz usually bigger and better at the nearby reef breaks - just a short walk down the beach. On a real swell... those spots get big and hairy... like a certain type of spider.
@henryssurfshowcase
@henryssurfshowcase 6 лет назад
+Another WorldView Is Possible -yes for sure on that one, this was in mid Sept, Jalama area was actually hitting a little better this day. Not much W swell also, with a little SSW....
@anotherworldviewispossible
@anotherworldviewispossible 6 лет назад
henryssurfshowcase - gotcha... Cracks can be good on that angle... T's not so much. I understand. The creek can get fun if the sands right.... but generally I walk up... or park by the Ranch gate. Big W's make it amazing, at times.
@henryssurfshowcase
@henryssurfshowcase 6 лет назад
+Another WorldView Is Possible- Sounds like you know this place very well! If you have any video of you surfing here I will be stoked to share your link in the description section..

henryssurfshowcase - I wish. Mostly just a bunch of warm fuzzy memories - in spite of the often frigid water. And one really close-call with drowning - out by myself @ about a 15'+ swell. I thought for sure that I was done, never to be found. It Turn'S out that one underground local charger had shown-up, but didn't paddle... he was considering a call to the Coast Guard - when I made it limping back-in to the beach, way down inside the bay, of the right. So I guess I'm saying that I could always use a good videographer. On occasion I see myself out riding, on old videos on RU-vid (as I watch'em and think... that tuberide looks familiar. Who dat Manson kneeboarder is?) Like I said previously - I could help you dial in spots and windows around SoCal... and then help to demonstrate exactly what makes those golden windows so special. But so far... no. No footage or shots out at Jalama. Frankly... only a dearth of footage of the area exists, in public venues. Which is why I wanted to thank you for that Ranch run you did. I'd like to see that trip happen again - on some maxing S and W swells.
@henryssurfshowcase
@henryssurfshowcase 6 лет назад
+Another WorldView Is Possible Yes for sure this area is dangerous waters! I was out at T's one time and took a major hit from something in the water? I was freaked!- and not many around to help when breaking at moderate to high surf.
