As a fourth generation American Finn in the Pacific Northwest, I've been aware of Viola Turpeinen for most of my life, even though she was best known decades before I was even born, and hailed from/was more familiar to those in another part of the country than where my my ancestors ultimately settled, in Southwestern Washington State. This particular recording has been of personal interest for years given that my maternal great-grandfather Salomon was born and raised in Jalasjärvi, prior to immigrating to the United States in the late 1800s.

I've been listening to her recordings since the early 1950s, later met her husband at Lake Worth, FL, and more recently assisted in the compilation of the complete recordings by her on four CDs issued in Finland - oh I also play the exact (!) same Excelsior accordion model made in NYC, 1935 [LMMM sets of reeds] which I've used for over 60 years in trying (and failing) to approach her level of genius when playing the old Finnish-American dance tunes at dancs. This particular polka is - her very best recording (in my opinion) and was recorded on Nov. 30, 1928 at Victor's Chicago studios. By late 1928, she had mastered dance rhythms to a point that she kept a constant steady beat - a consummate dance musician blessed with great musicianship. Sisu

@@edamundson743 Hello - the four cd set may possibly be found at Finnish import specialty stores - which are few and far between here in the United States - perhaps in northern MI. You may be able to find a set being sold by vendors at the annual FinnFests - an annual national convention celebrating Finnish and Finnish-American cultural features - especially featuring the music brought to the U.S. by Finnish immigrants early in the 20th century. The FinnFests are held each year in a different part of the U.S. - - I played Finn dances at the 2001 FinnFest, held at Villanova Univ. near Philadelphia, PA. [I highly recommend attending these annual events. Otherwise: search Artie Music, Artie Music Oy, Turka, Finland. Internet: artiemusic.com it is a great set - I contributed to the compilation, locating Turpeinen's only known radio broadcast, NBC April 1936 where she auditioned as an amateur on the Major Bowes' Original Amateur Hour (later, ted Mack Amateur Hour on TV in the 1950s. I get a "kick" out of her "nerve" appearing as an amateur in 1936. By then, she had been recording for Victor since 1928, touring the northern U.S. on several tours - and even toured Finland - in 1929 [some amateur - - bet her husband - William - put her up to it!].

@@unclejosh4935 Thank you for all of the information. I will check out the websites. I live in Oregon and the closest Finn community is Astoria. There is a Finnish gift shop there. My folks were from Cable, WI and there were a number of Finns in the area, not being far from the UP. I play the C chromatic button accordion and have learned a number of Finnish pieces. Happy New Year!
