In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The Jallianwala Bagh massacre, also known as the Amritsar massacre, took place on 13 April 1919. When an Anglo-Indian Reginald Dyer surrounded a large peaceful crowd that had gathered at the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, Punjab to protest against the arrest of pro-Indian independence leaders Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlew and Dr. Satya Pal. The Jallianwala Bagh could only be exited on one side, as its other three sides were enclosed by buildings. After blocking the exit with his troops, Dyer ordered to shoot at the crowd, continuing to fire even as the protestors tried to flee. The troops kept on firing until their ammunition was exhausted. Estimates of those killed vary between 379 and 1500+ people and over 1,200 other people were injured of whom 192 were seriously injured. Watch the Complete video to know why Dyer did what he did?

The soldiers who fired on unarmed Indian citizens were Indian too. This is not what a soldier is respected for. They were not fighting for the defence of their country, but to perpetuate the rule of their British masters at any cost, including slaying their own countrymen. That is why these soldiers were more of paid mercenaries than patriots.

Asal main Jaliwalabag kand ke samay Michael O'Dwyer, Punjab ke Givernor thy aur is kund ke baad General Dyer ke bacho main thy. Col. Dyre was extremely racist and bitter person. Governor Michael O Dwyer wanted the abnormal bitter Col. Dyre to teach them a lesson so as to prevent any, as you said, a rebellion like 1857. Dyre died in Britain penny less and without any ranks. British were very bitter to loose India and allowed the 1947 carnage. Rudyard Kipling was a racist anti India too. He supported fund collection for col. Dyre. Well presented program. Thanks

Udham Singh killed the then governer Michael Dwyer and col dyer was given the temporary rank of brig gen. He was retired from the rank of col and in 1927 he died due to paralysis.

@@Europa446 सन्मानपूर्वक 'सर' कहने के बदाय माँ-बहेन निकालूं? हम पाठशाला में अपने शिक्षक को 'सर' कहते थे. कुछ बार 'सर' कुछ बार 'साहेब' शब्द का उपयोग करता हूं. किसी को कोई आपत्ती है, तो वह मेरे टिपणीयाँ ना पढें. और स्वयं 'रोमन' लिपी का उपयोग कर के अन्य को अंग्रेजी का चमचा ना कहें.
