From the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft to never making another NFL roster 3 years later, Jamarcus Russell joins The Pivot to finally tell his side of the story about what really went on to cause such a short NFL career for the quarterback who had so much potential. This conversation covers everything with emotion filled losses, tension filled frustrations and honest reflection of one of the most disappointing stories in the sport's history.
Jamarcus, the highly successful LSU alumni and MVP of the 2007 Sugar Bowl, shares the Tiger ties with Ryan and reached out because he felt after all these years, it was time to answer many of the stories that shadowed his career and ultimately led to his downfall. Giving him every opportunity to explain and take accountability for what went on- Ryan, Fred and Channing ask the tough questions to find answers we all want to know.
Getting right into it, the guys ask him about substance abuse stories, not watching film, missing team meetings and relationships with coaches and teammates on the Raiders during his years there. Ryan asks Jamarcus if he considers himself the biggest NFL Bust of all time to a response that may come as a surprise but he also makes it clear where he stands financially after getting 35 million guaranteed and addresses rumors of the former quarterback being broke.
Not overlooking his ability to play at a high level, Channing asks Jamarcus how his talent led to losing seasons and not a lot of playing time as Jamarcus talks about his regrets, relationship with Al Davis, Nick Saban, Tom Cable, Hue Jackson and others in the organization who he feels played a role in his short NFL career. Reflecting back on a lot of "What Ifs', Jamarcus tells Fred he often wonders what it would have been like and how the course would have changed if Randy Moss was never traded to New England the year he was drafted and dispelling the rumors of his beef with Jeff Garcia and why he never made it on to another NFL roster.

Russell was fired from a volunteer assistant coach position at Williamson High School in Mobile, Alabama. He's also the subject of a lawsuit that accuses him of taking a check for $74,000 that was supposed to go to the high school as a donation. He has nothing to offer the youth until he can take responsibility for the way his career turned out. He spent this entire interview pointing fingers at everyone and everything instead of saying "I could've been a better player if I had just applied myself." He's the biggest bust in NFL history. Even over Ryan Leaf.

He is a legend from our city!!! A great leader for our youngest in the city of MOBILE. I even had a son and nephew to play on one of his youth football teams for 2 years 5 years ago. First day of practice he gave everybody new cleats even if you had some or not. He cooked for the kids almost every night after practice. He took them to all kind of football camps during the seaon and after. They went all the to Florida st to meet jimbo just like he mentioned in this video. He basically made sure everybody was striaght that was around him. AND IT WASNT BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDED HIM TO. So Put some respect of J. Russell name!! Stand up guy. P.S. I met him a couple times when I was a kid. My grandma would take me to every LSU game. One time we were in Orlando and lost on a last second Hail Mary play to Iowa. Devastated. I was probably 13. We waited outside of the stadium for the players to come out of the locker room. I just so happen to be standing next to Jamarcus family. He walked right up next to me to hug who I assumed was his mom. I was so happy to be so close to this legend. He was ballin that game and really gave the Tigers a fighting chance.(atleast how I remembered it) I could tell he was bummed and I immediately pipped up and thanked him for a tremendous season and told him that I felt like we were only even in this game because of him. His mom agreed with me lol. He smiled and kinda rubbed top of my head and said “thanks little man” 😂. He could have just blown me off and acted like I didn’t exist but he even signed an autograph for me. Super nice guy. Bummer he didn’t make it in the league. Rooting for JaMarcus in life.

The thing people have to remember when criticizing athletes for being busts is that they were great at the high school and college level. 99% of people would love to have been the #1 high school player in the country like Kwame Brown or the top college quarterback in the country like Russell or Ryan Leaf. These guys are not bums. They achieved a lot in their lives they just didn't achieve much at the pro level. Life goes on and these guys have a lot to offer other athletes coming up. They should be treated with respect even though they didn't meet OUR expectations. I wish I could say I was the VERY BEST at my craft at any level. These guys we call busts can actually say that.

That's some real ass shit... as fans we don't really know WHAT is going on in the lockerrooms, in the front office, in their personal lives. We just see guys get on the field or on the court and play the game. But there's still the other 75%+ of their lives that they have to deal with and not to mention a bunch of fans who antagonize them based off that limited information or insight. This is exactly why I appreciate shows/podcasts like this. Fans need to really be informed on how shit really be, especially at these levels. Nothing by love and respect to platforms like The Pivot for giving these players the opportunity to these athletes to let us know the true narratives behind the scenes.

Hard to not feel for the dude, he was just a young kid, still immature, super sensitive, and needed a veteran to take him under their wing. But he didn’t have anyone, and had a coach who didn’t want him to succeed, and a team that didn’t seem to want him either. It was easier to make him a scapegoat. So then he said f it and acted out and pretty much through everything away. Man I’m loving the Pivot…RC is def a killer in the interview game. The others are great too.

That 06 team was as good as any team in the nation at the end of the year. He could have done some things better in Oakland but he for sure was put in a horrible position. Best interview I have ever seen. I'm from Baton Rouge and I'm often in Mobile. They are by far the most purest hearted people I've known. Big Shout out to Jamarcus for this interview. His days at LSU cemented that football was for me. Even though hes not from here I can see that Baton Rouge has somewhat rubbed off on him! This is the first time watched a complete interview. Realest most relatable interview EVER!! Shout out to the Pivot as well! This was EPIC!

I thoroughly enjoyed this interview and I’m glad that JaMarcus had a chance to clear the air. I wish nothing but success to him and his family and he seems like a good dude. My hats off to you 3 in the podcast, you guys are top notch and I wish nothing but the best for all of you.

Glad to see Jamarcus Russell take responsibility for the outcome of his career and is in a better place now. I truly believe the Raiders organization did everything in their power to make sure he failed. Nice hearing his point of view and another great podcast. Love what RC said at the end "they didn't break you" 🙌🏾

I was a few years ahead of Jamarcus and went to a rival school but his Uncle Ray was always at our school talking about how things were going to change once his nephew gets to Williamson. Our schools always met the first game of the season. It was hard hearing people refer to him as a bust when you knew it was much deeper then football. Glad he found the need to tell his story when he was ready. Ryan your interview skills are impeccable, keep ACHIEVING Nupe.

Love this dudes attitude, I look up to this man! Major props to you Jmarc!!! The biggest thing was when this man says "Each day I dap up and shake each young mans hand and acknowledge and jiv it up with them" Everyone needs this from a coach, and to get it from an Ex NFL player that has the accolades he carries and has been through what he has been through. It is sad how much sports take over peoples lives and represent them when all reality there is more than sports and we are all humans!

Brother thank you for telling your story. I truly appreciate you putting out how things really went down. We can't be silent and let the world paint a picture of us. We have to be vocal when necessary! Like Ryan said, your biggest pivot is that you are still doing good!!!

I appreciate Jamarcus coming this show and opening up. He went through some tough stuff. I just wish that there was veterans to help him in the NFL. It sounds like he was on his own with no one next to him. Quite different from other stories on the show. I wish Jamarcus the best for his life!
