This is how every bake show should be, one chaotic character that doesn't know what tf their doing and doesn't give a shit and somehow is still on the show
@@pieflower6419 I think "What more could you ask?" about all the ingredients being there is underrated, I don't even see people talking about it in the comments
@@MB-dg3lr If it were a real competition, there is no way they would have had him do it. The producers of these shows have been to the rodeo before; they know exactly what they're getting into when they cast. James knew what he was doing as well. He did a take on she show's contestants, and the reason he got away with it was that he made himself the brunt of the jokes, not the show or the judges. He is absolutely brilliant.
To be fair, he did only put it on the meringue that represented the sea, like salty sea water and apparently it tasted nice, so... I guess it might've even worked on the real deal. XD
@@tomoliver2112 it's a joke that people find relatable because people tend to experience it at least once. Since it's so terrifying, making jokes about it can help people feel a little more comfortable. If your comment was a joke then sorry for the paragraph. If not, I hope you see people aren't trying to be attention seekers :)
According to him, he had been awake for 36 hours doing this due to jet lag. And he can still smile and think AND BAKE?!?!?! True professional! Had the editors kept his explanation of this in, it would have made for an even MORE amazing show to watch him do this well on no sleep!
Felt really sorry for him watching this but also impressed cause clearly he was a great sport and kept his fantastic sense of humour. Also this sums up my entire first year doing biochem at uni
I mean that woman from America won it and was also jet lagged lol forget her name but she was on James podcast and pointed out to him that she also hadn't slept but won!
Omg! I thought at first he was on a regular season and was making a fool of himself lol but it’s a celebrity one so they brought him on to be the comedian he is
The whole cast and crew was told to act extra kindly to James because he had a breakdown the night before where he called a suicide hotline because he was extremely jet lagged, hadn’t slept in 36 hours, and his girlfriend was in the middle of leaving him for Rowan Atkinson.
Knowing he was on 36 hours of no sleep with the worst jetlag of his life, chugging black coffees after being off caffeine for 5 years. Really brings this together
They were aware he was having a tough time irl at the time of the show being filmed, so they were all being nice anyway. Idk how it actually tasted ofc but it’s less his life working out like that and more support from the people around you :)
Ugh can you imagine being suicidal and jet lagged and 36 hrs no sleep and then not only have to do a series of tasks you’ve never done before ON CAMERA - constantly watched for every moment - but also then have to be compared to others and critiqued by professionals multiple times in a day
Went to his live show before it aired and he told us it was one of the worst days of his life. Literally had to hold back tears at some points. A combination of his gf breaking up with him around that time, jet lagged and all round stress of being bad at baking while cameras filmed him the whole time. Credit to him for keeping it together and credit to the editor for not showing how distressed he was.
"I haven't slept in 36 hours and I had the worst jetlag of my life." James talking about his bakeoff experience on Cold Lasagne I hate Myself 1999 stand-up show
He is the typa guy who is best friends with the maincharacter in every netflix movie. You know, the guy who brings humor and makes the most serious moments funny
To me, out of everything of his I've seen, this episode is the most brilliant. He came so beautifully prepared, with every contestant character archetype in mind, then he played it out with not one flawed moment. I love how Paul Hollywood looks at him; I think he really admires the guy because he was hilarious, but he never, ever made fun of anyone else, or the show itself. He was the brunt of every single joke, and because it is really easy for a character like that to become a hateful asshat, that kind of attention to detail is essential.
People should watch Cold Lasagna Hate Myself 1999. He says how he was really tired both physically, emotional and mental whilst this was going on and he had an awful time. James is so lovely and deserves the best
This is like when you were a child and your parents told you what you did was amazing while in reality it was shit. But they didn't want to be honest so you don't get upset.
@@madisongrace7675 tw: suicide mention at the time of filming this bake off special, james was experiencing a mental breakdown. he had the worst jetlag of his life, having not slept for 36+ hours, and had also just found out-via a newspaper-that his girlfriend of several years had left him for rowan atkinson. he ended up calling the samaritans suicide hotline because he was in such an awful place mentally. james went into all of this in his stand-up special ‘cold lasagne hate myself 1999’.
@@madisongrace7675 yeah, it was released on vimeo but i think there’s a google drive somewhere that you can watch it on for free. you can probably find it on reddit or twitter. and despite some of the content being sad, it’s still a brilliant special and very funny!
According to Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999 he was the most jet lagged and sleep deprived he'd ever been but we all just watched this and said, "Yep, that's James for you."
