The girl that never was and carry you home are also heartbreaking, especially when you realise many of James songs, like Monsters, are based on real life tragedy. I would also add No bravery to the list of must see videos as it includes real video footage recorded when James was serving in the Bosnian war. Very sobering. James is a master of the sad song.
James wanted this to be 100% real and authentic. This was the first time he'd sung it to his dad, who had only recently been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease and was not expected to survive, although they did eventually find a donor and he made it. Both James and his dad are former officers in the British military. First time I heard this was 3 days after my Dad passed away and it broke me I lost my Dad 4 years ago this August after he fell and hit his head sadly he didn't survive it caused a bleed on his brain I sadly never had the chance to tell him I loved him and that hurts but i know he is at peace now.
The phrase “ I’m not your son, your not my father, we’re just two grown men saying goodbye” was a saying his father told him as he was shipped off to war. This is a 1 take live version of the first time he sang it to his father. I can’t imagine how difficult the song was to sing two verses and choruses while his father was sitting there next to him with the camera focused in so as to not show his father sitting next to him the whole time. That took some serious stones to accomplish in my not so humble opinion. I’ve written songs for people that have died for their families and all of them except one heard the songs before they passed, trust me when say, it’s very difficult to make it through a song like this and stay clean and sing as clearly as he did. Blunt is a monster good song writer and artist.
This song has so much meaning for me. I took my father into my home when he turned 90 and was on his last two months of life on Hospice. I actually did fold his clothes and get them ready for him each day and night. I left the light on for him. I hugged him every single night and told him how much I loved him. Although emotionally sad, it truly was awesome to spend those last two months of his life together....and yes we came full circle and I was taking care of him and making sure he wasn't afraid of what was just around the corner. I still cry when I hear this song. Thanks for sharing.
In 1975 my father was there for my first breath, he helped clean me and cloth me, then carried me into my first home. In 2023, I was there for my fathers last breath, I helped clean him and cloth him and carried him out of his last home. I miss you pops (RBA)
Imagine how you'd feel if you didn't already know the song from a cover. Discovering this song for the first time with the original and this video is devastating. 😭
I couldn’t cry when the other guy sang it knowing the personal level in which James sang it. His sister wrote the song. Jame’s father at that time was dying. So the tears were real. For me, to use that as a cover song, is insulting. That’s just my opinion. James writes a lot of stuff from his experience. If you listen to The Girl That Never Was you’ll hear what I mean.
My brother just had a massive heart attack about two weeks ago and he died instantly. My father died a few years ago and we had a love hate relationship, but as he was dying i knelt and talked a while to him even though he couldn't respond. He held onto my hand so hard though and at that moment nothing mattered but how much we loved each other. I wish i could have made him prouder, but something in the way he squeezed my hand and pulled it to his chest made me feel he had forgiven everything and i could feel his love so strong. Maybe in some ways he was proud of me. Thank you for this beautiful video.
This was just one take and his vocals were live with a backing track. The Music Company wanted to autotune it because they thought his emotions messed with the vocals but he insisted on it staying as it was.
Captain Blount saying goodbye to Colonel Blount, fortunately prematurely. In an interview James said it was shot five times, only twice with his father.
He only did one take one time no edit straight up what you see is what you get. What's amazing is the total story james was a British officer an his dad is a Colonel his senior officer. So he's not just paying respects to his father but respect as his senior officer.
What the title Monsters means. James is refering to when he was just a young kid and his farther would tell him that he would chase the monsters away so james could go to sleep and feel safe, without worring about the monsters in his bedoom. Now it is James's responsibility to tell his farther, it is okay to close your eyes and he (James) will chase the monsters away.
Hello, nice to see you! At the beginning of time we were together and we spoke the original language. Old place names are witnesses of this (there are few of them left). We are the last speakers of the original language. Greetings from Estonia! I am sending you an old song!
Background. James Blunt's father Charles, himself a kidney donor, was diagnosed with stage four chronic kidney disease. Blunt wrote "Monsters" to "express his feelings about his father and his illness, almost as if it's a touching farewell to his father"....the studio also wanted to do retakes because he was legit crying and he told them to stick it
As a man always told men do not cry suck it up if I did cry my dad would of told me you want to cry I will give you something to cry about use the belt you are a young man and men do not cry and everything is fine never show emotions or feelings
Hello, it's a pleasure to see you!~It turns out that we are a little bit related (Sulewesi (melted water) sea. House(he doesn't give me matches-more than you think! Place names(we can understand them)!I'm sending you a song from Flowers!Greetings From Estonia!
James Blunt told his father that he would only be able to shoot this video in one take, so he wasn't to muck things up! You can see James nodding to his arm to remind his father to put his hand there. He shot it in one go, at the end everyone in the room was in tears apart from his father, who said, "Why are you all crying? I'm still here!"
My father died from suicide over 20 years ago, one Sunday morning.. I never got to say goodbye, and Im losing the memory of his voice.. Tell people you love them every day.. This makes me bawl my eyes out every time.. And Im a 52 year old man..
I feel for you. I lost my father to suicide when I was 22, It's been 38 years since The anger, the guilt and pain have long since gone, and only sadness remains. I never really got to know him and wish I had. This song along with Peter Gabriel's Don't give up, Cat Steven's Father and Son and Mike and the Mechanis Living Years, still bring tears to my eyes
Fyi: This was live, it was not fake, and it was done in one take (b/c he did not want to redo it) ..l. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Py2db2s4gR0.htmlsi=9jwxiZk7Nwdb2Bzf
it was his dad , he was going to die, needed a transplant. james was a soldier and when he served he had his guitar strapped to the side of his tank, his dad got a transplant, but james must have so much more to sing because im sure he must have more from the war he was in.
Once they finished the video, there wasn’t a dry eye in the studio…and it was said, his father said to everyone.. ‘why are you all crying , I’m still here’.. 😂🙏🏽
I admire your determination, but this song breaks everyone, more so those who had unresolved issues when their father passed away. BUT.. your steely resolve didnt even make it to a minute before choking ¬.¬ 😋
I was so disappointed to hear that your exposure to this song was through American idol. I think it was disgraceful and for Ian to co-opt James song and use it in that way in order to win a competition. If he had used the song in one of the rounds following the audition I wouldn't mind. Because at least then he could give the song its proper respect that it deserved. But to take James ode to his dieing father and chop it up for commerical appeal and present it to the world as if it's your own pain and your own heartfelt words is disrespectful beyond belief. He essentially used James genuine emotional turmoil to manipulate the audience into allowing him to progress in a game show. James may have acted like he was fine with it but I'm sorry if someone had done that to me it would be a problem .for this reason I will never ever listen to music by Ian. He showed.me.all.i.need to see about his character
