I remember going to see Goldeneye at the cinema with my dad when I was 7 years old. The film was rated 12 so I wasn't allowed to have a ticket. My dad bought us tickets for Babe the Sheep Pig instead, and then we just snuck in to see Goldeneye. I genuinely felt like I was Bond for a moment, going to see Bond.

Goldeneye is elite. The score is actually fitting. A cold war undertone. That it hasn't ended and Bond has to stop it. The plot itself is outstanding and it would be the best writing if the promotional material didn't fudge it up by saying Sean Bean was a supporting actor. Should have made it as Alec Trevelyan played by Sean Bean at the end of the score.

I really don't have a favorite Bond...I have a least favorite, George Lazenby hahahaha. I really thought Connery was a great Bond to open the Cinematic Series with. Moore added more of a lighter take on the character. Dalton's take was criticized for years, but has come to be more revered due to Craig's take. I really thought Brosnan really did a great job of taking aspects of Connery, Moore and Dalton. Craig is more of an anti-hero.

World is not Enough is definitely underrated. Pierce is perfect, Elektra is electric, Christmas Jones is a bond holiday of her own. It was Desmond Llewelyn's last film (sadly) before they gave John Cleese a try. Valentine (Robbie Coltrane) adds an extra dynamic to the film. And the plot isn't as crazy as some of the earlier films. The theme song is pretty good too. I give it 8/10.

I will never understand the obsession with Skyfall. It has been a while since I have seen it, so maybe I need to give it another shake, but the only thing I remember agreeing on or really enjoying was the cinematography. I will sing it's praises there. The lighting and framing of scenes at the end in Scotland are really great. Otherwise, I just find it alright. I think after viewing my own opinion and revisiting the movies I think why Goldeneye is so high up is it is able to balance fun and seriousness. I think Skyfall is too dour and Bond should be fun or it is at it's best when it's fun. It does not need to devolve to silliness or camp which can be fun in it's own right, but Goldeneye works so well because it knows WHEN to be serious and when to enjoy itself. Also though other than the opening car scene music, which kind has grown on me, the music is great in Goldeneye, the end showdown theme between Alek and James gets me every time.

It's funny. This very video, combined with the realisation that there's a Bond reviewer who not only shares my love for GoldenEye and my disdain for Spectre, but is also able to watch the first two Connery movies without nostalgia goggles, is what got my back into the Bond franchise. And now that I've spent the last months watching the entire series twice (first in chronilogical order, then in opposite order of my preliminary ranking), I'm thinking you're being too harsh on Dr. No and From Russia With Love. Maybe I'm getting old. Anyway, here's the ranking I came up with: 1. GoldenEye 2. Casino Royale 3. Goldfinger 4. On Her Majesty's Secret Service 5. Licence to Kill 6. Tomorrow Never Dies 7. It was known recently that Brosnan had been plain and simply fired for no reason on a phone call. Brosnan really wanted to go out with a bang and I think many fans wanted that too even though as to the point of Die Another Day the series was at an all time low. But I truly think Brosnan deserved way better.

Certainly more than Licence To Kill. It’s a pretty awesome movie that’s held up well in general, aside from obvious things like Bond siding with the Arabs who splintered into the Taliban later. Many scenes look surprisingly modern and seem like they were shot yesterday. Licence To Kill is too much of a relic of it’s era. It’s like a TV movie of some police procedural like Magnum PI mixed with a violent action movie like Death Wish and Die Hard starring James Bond and friends loaded up with all the late 80s tropes like ninjas, forced love triangles, waterskiing and roadhouse fights.

As far as Bond being against Melina getting revenge on Kristatoes in FYEO, Bond is a stone cold killer who shows no remorse when he kills and feels no pity (he wouldn't be good at his job if he did), he knew that Melina didn't have the mind set that he did and it would turn her into a person just like him if she avenged her parents (he was trying to save her from becoming an emotionless killer like himself). It's kind of similar to the dynamic between Bruce and Dick Grayson in Batman Forever.

Calvin - Bond Reviewer thanks! YOLT was one of the first Bond films I saw (grew up in the gap between Brosnan and Craig) so there’s probably a fair degree of nostalgia involved, and it helps that it’s got the best soundtrack in the series (imo) too haha. When I think about it properly though there’s no Bond film that I enjoy as much as YOLT and I think enjoyment is the most important thing for this series. That’s why although Spectre does a lot of things fairly well it’s at the bottom, because that Bond/Blofeld brothers development just frustrates and disappoints me so much that I get no enjoyment out of that film anymore.

You've voiced the problem with Goldfinger for me. It gets a lot of praise, but I always feel like Bond is dragged along for most of the plot and very little is accomplished due to his agency. And for a character so defined by active competence, it falls a little flat. Meanwhile, there's little love for Dr. No except for the novelty, and people like FRWL but they actually rank highest for me--the films that came before Goldfinger had plots driven by Bond's practical spy work. In Dr. No he goes from old-fashioned detective work in a Murder She Wrote Jamaican murder mystery to blowing up a nuclear reactor powering a jamming device shooting down rockets as the Cold War space race is in full swing, gradually discovering how quaint and insignificant this minor colony of his fallen empire is, basically absorbed into one of the new spacebound superpowers, just as he is brought into Leiter's CIA orbit. And yet every step of the way, he individually and with a couple ragtag allies uses a combination of brain and brawn to overcome overwhelming odds and show the sun has not yet set on the British Empire. The titular character and his base, meanwhile, set the pattern for future Bond villains: arrogant evil geniuses with Mandarin collars/Nehru jackets alienated from a Western Civilization they find decadent and which Bond represents.

He makes a very good point that it has some of the best chemistry between Bond and his leading lady. The films which succeed in that regard are definitely elevated- it's one of the strengths of the The Living Daylights, for instance. I believe in the romance between Maryam D'Abo and Timothy Dalton, like with Roger Moore and Maude Adams or Eva Green and Daniel Craig.

I noticed similarities between Quantum of Solace and Spectre: -Bond and the lead Bond girl travel through a desert. -They stay at a hotel together. -The romantic chemistry between Bond and the Bond girl is very weak. -The climax is set in an exploding building. -Bond does not kill the villain. -Bond flies and crashes a plane in a chase scene. -Bond is chastised by M for killing a suspect at the beginning. -Bond goes rogue and works on his own for half of the film. -The Bond girl has a tormented past with the villain.

I honestly can't understand everybody's dissatisfaction with Quantum of Solace. It's obviously not as good as Casino Royale or Skyfall but I really like it nonetheless. I think that Dominic Greene is a very realistic villain and portrays the villains of our time better than an unrealistic supervillain who wants to destroy the world with an orbital laser or something like that. The opening car chase with the DBS and Alfa Romeos is still my favorite Bond opening of all time for some reason.

When I watch Quantum of Solace or Spectre in sequence with the other Craig Bonds, I'm also thinking "Oh god this is a letdown." But when I watch them on their own, or around other non-Craig Bonds, I enjoy them much more and see them as more along the median for the franchise. I'd certainly take them over the worst of the Brosnan & Moore eras. Part of what hurts Quantum and Spectre so much IMO is the fact that they were both following up on two of the greatest Bond films ever. When somebody gets a B- coming after an A+ "feels" worse than a C student getting another C.

I use to love The Living Daylights and Goldeneye as a kid... But that was all before watching AND reading On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Ian Fleming's finest work and I think the film is the absolute most faithful adaptation with the most consistently spectacular action sequences of the entire series as well as a surprisingly sinister villain plan. Even with Lazenby's average performance. For that reason it's my favourite. Casino Royale is the second most faithful and is now my second favourite film in the series. Sean Connery has always been my favourite Bond, but I do feel he phoned in his performances in You Only Live Twice and Diamonds. I don't think Never Say Never Again is as bad as you say, it had some great stunts and Kim Basinger was smoking hot. But yes it would have benefited from having the Eon Trademarks and the Bond Theme. I wouldn't be against a fan cut adding the Bond theme and the gun Barrel sequence.

My all-time favourite has not changed: “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.” I saw this in New York City during the 1969 Christmas holidays, at the age of thirteen. George Lazenby not only was a refreshing change, breathing new life into the character, but remains my favourite Bond. Connery did a sleepwalk through two films, then returned looking like Lazenby’s father! (I’m happy he took that break.) But we went from ”OHMSS” to a succession of crap, not getting the Bond mojo back until “For Your Eyes Only.” Then, another run of mediocrity until “Licence To Kill.” Whatever career difficulties Lazenby endured, it may be a good thing that he didn’t stick around for what followed.
