Back in 1986, I was six years old when my mother asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I told her that I wanted to be James Bond. She laid into me, how could I want to grow up and be some guy to sleeps around with lots of women? Did I just want to spend my life drinking and carousing with women all night? Again, keep in mind that I was six years old. Now, at 42, the answer is obviously, yes.

Connery was the best not because he was the first but because along with director Terence Young created a character rich with charisma, charm raw sexuality and ruthlessness that the cinema had never seen he set the standard for others to follow some failed some matched but none have surpassed Connery's portrayal of the iconic superspy

Many thanks for a wonderful documentary. I'm a veteran, died in the wool, purist Bond fan, for whom Ursula Andress emerging from the waves was a formative erotic experience, and who only recognises the Connery years up to Thunderball as being truly authentic, although I have a soft spot for Lazenby's alpine outing. As Alan Partridge famously said, 'Stop getting Bond wrong!' , reference to a British comedy character, that might be lost on American viewers.

I never perceived that makeup was used to create an ethnic Oriental (nowadays 'Asian') effect. I always perceived that the characters were of mixed ancestry or were characters played that way using "ethnic makeup" especially the female referred to. The well traveled, upper classes would mix occasionally with Orientals (far eastern) so I simply always accepted that these were people from that world. Also, they may have supposed to have been products of WW2 births (soldiers and local Orientals etc) employed by powerful parties for their mixed ancestry. To me it's obvious the female actress is genuinely of mixed ancestry. The male actor may be simply wearing makeup and creating the effect of being Asian. This effect worked with the show Kung Fu using David Carradine and this may be because his father was English actor John Carridine and his mother an Irish actress and he may have had a slightly EurAsian look due to hidden ancestry or passed down from Scandinavians in Britain/Ireland who sometimes retain a Saami or Mongolian look. The actor in Dr No creating this effect should not be offensive as unlike Blackface, this was as common as Russian Jews playing Native Americans in old westerns, simply because their Arctic Indigenous ancestry was Eurasian enough to make it believable with some makeup. Oriental Asians were not regularly seen in movies at this time especially in leads in film and become more acceptable with the Bruce Lee era etc with some exception of course. It's moreso that it's a product of it's time. It should be viewed this way.

Never Say Never Again was the perfect Bond film for me. A grizzled veteran who doesn't care about exercises anymore drawn back into service against his will. An aging man who just couldn't beat people to death anymore. My favorite Bond fight is the health club fight. The bad guys finally sent someone who could beat Bond in a straight brawl so he had to use cunning to defeat his assassin. It was a swan song to Connery, and I thought a better "Thunderball". Bond is a real veteran spy in it. Calls in reinforcements when needed. Talks his way out of bad situations. Cunning replaces physical prowess, and he even seems truly angry when his love fellow spy is killed (and he has to use his wits to eventually avenge her, and escape his own demise). I don't know, maybe I'm old, "Never Say Never Again" is the only Bond film I repeat watch outside of "Dr. No" (outside of Moore films I happen to randomly catch on TV).

You have an interesting take on NSNA but I didn't like that film. It didn't feel as an authentic Bond movie despite having the real one in Connery as it lacked the real M, Moneypenny and the Bond music. Also Thunderball's main villain, Bond girls and femme fatale were far superior as well.

You forgot to mention the Ford MUSTANG used in Goldfinger. Many people went to this movie just to see the Mustang. Ford couldn't manufacture enough of them. Also, in the novel Honey Ryder came out of the water naked.. That would have been some scene to see.

*Research please!* Broccoli's WIFE was the one who saw Connery's potential, labelling him "sexy". Fleming, not keen at first, later saw him as so right that he gave Bond a Scottish backstory in future books.

From Russia with Love is my favorite : some gadgetry but not too much, sex that wasn't for show but was really part of the story, scenes that were true (the Iscambul reservoir has never been matched since), other actors who had their own personality, and action scenes that were a perfect balance between low key and spectacular without being too much …

Those "Gun Barrel Logo" shots are interesting to me in a way because you can compare the ergonomics of the shooters. Some look very quick and efficient and some look very awkward and clumsy. That may seem like simple choreography but in offensive and defensive combat maneuvers, such details can make a very critical difference. My two cents worth, anyway, just a thought.

I just began rewatching a lot of Bond movies last week, to get up-to-speed again. The scheme of Dr No seriously confused me.. The goal was simply to use radiation to interfere with an American space mission (rocket launch), in order to give the space mission advantage to USSR, right?! All I thought was "what does No / Spectre directly gain from this, besides tipping the scales of geopolitics?"
