James Burke - Balanced Anarchy

This short clip comprises the main point of James Burke's excellent series- the day the universe changed.
Against a backdrop of a buddhist monastary, high in the himalayas, James Burke envisions a utopic future. Stopping just short of presaging the singularity, communities like digg and /. are quite obviously foretold.
I'm quite surprised that this hasn't been heavily sampled for electronic music.

Goosebumps when I was 14 years old and first saw this, Goosebumps now every time I hear it as an adult. I have been so lucky to have lived and understood the birth of global telecommunications, digitized human knowledge and decentralization. What a time to be alive. Humanity has so much potential and we can't let the bastards win.

Gosh! This takes me back. I used to get home from school and watch this show - just after Laurel and Hardy and just before supper. Then came Blake's 7, I think, (I can't be sure - it was such a vast amount of time ago, at least in terms of the scale of one, insignificant human lifetime!). James Burke always sparked mine and my younger siblings' imagination. Thanks for posting, DJsinkid.

Well, it happened, and governments and businesses have spent the last decade or more trying to kill it. And now it's subverted to enhance conformity. From shadowbans on reddit to google's own ad-revenue maximizing technique of tailoring search results to individuals, people online are being directed into little easily categorized boxes where they get what they want and won't cause trouble. But of course, people would probably have done it to themselves anyway given enough time.

And here we are with a totalitarian cancel culture fueled by the Internet. Of course they can't stop all of us from communicating with each other no the matter how hard they try. So that is the positive anarchy Burke alluded to: freethinkers able to share perspectives regardless of the powers that be smearing it all as mis/dis/malinformation. How will this tension be resolved? I think I will bookmark this comment and come back every year to check on its progress.

wow, I always loved Burke. He was on PBS in the late 80s quite a bit and I saw them all repeatedly. The unfortunate thing was I was as Idealistic as he was back then about comuter networking. However, what he assumes is that everybody using those networks will be equally educated (and want to be). What we have now is closer to Mike Judge's "Idiocracy" than to Burke's vision of "Balanced Anarchy." Anarchy is earned, and we haven't earned even this little bit of it we already have.

I rechecked my copy of Burke's book, The Day The Universe Changed, to make sure of this point. Burke's "balanced anarchy" isn't a reference to political anarchy, but intellectual anarchy, a balance between the elite, specialist scientists, and laymen on the nature and structure of knowledge. Nonetheless, while I agree that knowledge should be more accessible, I still disagee with his egalitarian impulse. Not all knowledge or sources of truth are equally valid.
@JCisJD
@JCisJD 6 лет назад
Ah would you say that aplies to the knowledge that is supposed to keep us safe ... Should we know the truth about an event like pearl harbour for example?

@macsnafu

@@JCisJD My apologies. This is an old comment, and I must have missed when you made your comment. I don't think Pear Harbor is a good example for what Burke was talking about. To answer your question, of course we should know the truth about Pearl Harbor, even if it puts FDR in a bad light, or perhaps especially if it puts FDR in a bad light. But I believe that Burke was trying to say that life in a primitive Tibetan village without electricity, plumbing, etc., is as justified and valid a way to live as living in a modern urban city. And while there is no way to quantify how one feels about living in such different societies, it is arguable that the quality of life between such societies is quite different. More importantly, I think there is a vast *inequality* between the idea of making a sacrifice when the moon "disappears," for example, and realizing that a new moon is a regular natural astronomical event, and sacrifices aren't necessary. They are not intellectually equal or valid ideas, but I think Burke was trying to say that they were.

Intelligent and articulate comment, hooray! I agree with all you said except your contention that control and repression are "unnatural". It is our animal territoriality that is behind most repression, that and the desire to control comes from our animal desire for "alpha" status. i believe humans only become enlightened when they control the animal within and not vice versa. Contact me if you wanna discuss this further.

I think he's right about the open access to knowledge. While political discourse is horrible, we do have a lot of easy access now to learning new skills from RU-vid or courses online. I think the potential was there for an exchange of political ideas, but I think Facebook is a terrible format for having any kind of real discussion.

Great speech. But the love of power still stands. And people do need certainty. True, everyone should ideally have things done their own way. But that is impossible in our world. It is a mess no intellectual can solve, because that is not the mindset we have. It is too complex, you're better off letting it go. You cannot find a perfect system, because people are not perfect and never will be.

The universe is too much for our total comprehension, so we simplify with models. Patterns that seem to fit based on evidence; with models, newer ideas often occur in individuals,& then a broader picture emerges. To move ahead requires greater equity in all societies,& between peoples,& the inertia to change may be overcome through an opening of dialog & awareness. Against this - those who wish to control & repress - which cannot last, as it is an unnatural state to put individuals into.

@artemiasalina1860
@artemiasalina1860 5 лет назад
You might want to update this prediction 8 years later. ;-) With the invention of blockchain tech and keeping Moore's Law in mind, voluntaryism may be much closer than we think. e.g. New Hampshire legislators saying that taxation is theft: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cGO7m8O83ZQ.html This would not have been possible without the ability to spread information as easily as we can. I'm increasingly optimistic.
@Mtaalas
@Mtaalas 12 лет назад
@UKSazzy67 The problem is, that there's going to be stuff that is objectively true and objectively false and your preferred world view doesn't change those things. So to everyone in the comments saying that "every belief system is equal" I say: no it's not. Since atoms are there, will you believe in them or not and the earth goes around the sun did you belief in it or not. It's more like we have an open forum to discuss these hypotheses and those that are correct are preserved and strengthen.

One way of seeing things at a time? Perhaps this is a result of forming a cultural standard mindset which is comforting in its simplification of a complex world. After all, why are fairy-tales so appealing? New models require a shift in thinking, and often upset the power structures of societies, and this leads to individual frustrations & challenges to an established elite, and that can lead to conflict.

I watched the whole video. 1) a system of symbols which acts to 2) establish powerful, pervasive, and long-lasting moods and motivations in men by 3) formulating conceptions of a general order of existence and 4) clothing these conceptions with such an aura of factuality that 5) the moods and motivations seem uniquely realistic” (Geertz 1973d:90). Our society in a nutshell, and the set of symbols are continuously changing. Same thing Burke said, just different words. Science is a religion.

I think Burke is confusing some things. Yes, knowledge and values are human artifacts, and values are especially subjective. This does not mean that there is no objective reality. The only thing that really changes is how we perceive that reality, and thus, how we act and react, not reality itself. Knowledge is only as good as it actually describes reality, thus not all knowledge is equally true or valuable.

@yonaetc (cont'd) colour is blue and the Golden Rule says to do unto you as I would have you do unto me, does that mean that it is best to give you a blue sweater, because that is what I would have wanted? Obviously, this is a very simple example about a very trivial difference, but unfortunately that trivial difference multiplies up as issues and differences become more and more important. It isn't so easy to reconcile the differences between people as just saying "We are all connected."
@DJsunkid

@yonaetc (cont'd) makes it very hard for me to take it seriously as a feasible model for human civilization. As long as those evil people can hurt ANYBODY, as long as any person can violate another person, widespread, sustained anarchy on anything but a very small scale is a recipe for disaster and heartbreak.

@shovelcharge Mindful religion might be. Science isn't good, it's just there. Reason, Logic and rationalism can all be applied to pretty horrifying ends.Even ethical scientists can make discoveries which can be used to do very nasty things. Buddhism in theory is a all about being mindful but that doesn't stop some people who claim to be Buddhists doing pretty nasty things either. That doesn't invalidate any of them just as Religion doesn't invalidate itself because of some of gits using it.

What a ridiculous and trite blanket characterization. Wishing companionship should not be equated with "getting pleasure whenever you want it". A pairbond relationship is essential to human psychological development, and if you have been in a long-term relationship, such has been called marriage, you would realize that love transcends sex. There is nothing sinful about wishing to exchange your opinions with another person, nor sharing the same emotionally potent experiences.
